Anyway, the music started a bit earlier than that....on Wednesday, got The Darkest of Winters for Mike Bahr.....since I'd heard most of it before from that tape tree we did on here in early '96, it was no huge surprise, except for the CIA9ITG, which I hadn't heard before....still and all, cool thing to have on disc, with the overwhelming bass cleaned up some..... then I went home home (my parents) to do my football weekend, and music started pouring in.....another bahr package, with BOTH Acoustic Spirits and Mosaic in it! woohoo! (that sounds so lame, i can't believe i just used that) Mosaic: Odjeda......i'm cracking up just thinking about it..... FII songs live previews.....sounded good over the headphones, wanna hear what they're like filling up my apt, haven't quite got around to that yet.... Kings X: Acoustic Spirits....I'm glad Syrinx's rules for best of 1997 allow for Mr. Bahr's discs....you better freakin' believe this one is gonna be on there.....Word to Mike: this is the best CD you have done.....THANK YOU! the band is really human, funny sometimes to the point of corniness, and play their songs to the point of bringing me a tear in my eye....the shift from acoustic segment A to electric is a bit abrupt, but easily gotten over.....by the time they start in on electric summerland, you've been listening to the electric show for hours, and by the time they finish Fall On Me, you want it to pull an energizer bunny and keep going ang going...... and acoustic segment b take twelve second to get you back into the acoustic flow, and when the last of "we are finding who we are" fades away, i find myself.....is it legit to make a boot the #1 release of the year? methinks I'm gonna have to go back and listen to finneus gauge and fates some more to help out on that call.... i'll get to the rest in a minute...... partha ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Nov 1997 17:03:39 -0600 From: email_address_removed (Mark Lampert) To: "Ytsejam" Subject: Houston Ytsevening Inital Response Message-ID: <01bceef6$0c150180$message_id_removed> Ahoy, Ok! So far I've gotten about six or seven good responses to the first announcement. As far as I know, DT is not coming until '98 sometime, so this is really just to gather folks together to meet and eat for an evening. When DT does come, there is a possibility of many Texas jammers getting together for the show, at which time there will be another Houston Ytsevening. However, anyone is welcome to come, wherever you are, and bring any friends you think might be interested. Last time was pretty cool, I got to meet some other jammers, talk about prog for who knows how long, and hear some great new bands I hadn't heard before. prior weekend would be wise as many of you will be out of town for the Christmas holidays, so the tentative date is currently December 13th, a Saturday, or the following evening. Whatever is best for everyone. So far, Texadelphia is the current location of choice, unless someone decides there is a better place to meet and eat and/or destroy. Wherever the final location, I will send the address and phone number to anyone coming. This is still a month away, so there is plenty of time for changes and rearranges, but the date will probably stand on that weekend. That's it for now, mail me if you have any questions! · • Colonel Mustard • · ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Nov 1997 19:13:18 -0500 From: "Brian P. The New York quintet has almost gone out of its way to eschew what's hot on the rock horizon, sticking to a hard and heavy approach that went out with the Carter administration. But as one of the lone practitioners of the technically meticulous and thematically ambitious prog-rock, Dream Theater also has enjoyed success and longevity few Nirvana-come lately grunge outfits can equal. "It's like an unwritten rule that we don't chase trends," guitarist John Petrucci said. "The music scene changes so often -- what's popular, what's on top of the charts -- that it's best just to stay focused." And Dream Theater has focused complex, hard-driving opuses that combine the chops of AC/DC and Led Zeppelin with elements of Yes and Rush. The group (which plays at the Ogden Theatre Thursday) has tinkered with the formula over four albums, but never strayed too far from the original blueprint. The group's latest release, _Falling Into Infinity_, features a new recording approach. In the past, the process was like a conveyor belt: the drums for the entire album would be recorded at once, followed by the guitars, the bass and so forth. For _Falling Into Infinity_, the group -- Petrucci, vocalist James LaBrie, bassist John Myung, drummer Mike Portnoy and keyboardist Derek Sherinian -- completed one song at a time. "The way we did it before, it was cool to a certain extent, but it didn't give the songs different personalities," Petrucci said. It's evident in the variety on _Falling Into Infinity_, which yaws from the hard rock of the opening New Millennium to the pop-leaning You Not Me to the showcase in virtuosity, Peruvian Skies. Petrucci said the band's technical prowess isn't just for flexing on complex songs (such as the 1995 release, _A Change of Seasons_, which clocked in at 23-minutes.) "I think that our abilities give us more to choose from," he said. "Sometimes things don't need to be done more complicated, but if we need to get more technical, we have that ability. When I listen to classical music, Beethoven or Chopin, it goes through so many moods, incarnations. The moments are so beautiful, they can bring tears to your eyes. Then some are so insanely technical you wonder how they can play it. But that sort of challenge drives me. If you can move someone with something simple or beautiful or play something so complex that it makes someone nervous -- that's the allure to me." That allure is echoed by a hardcore contingent of fans that keeps close track of the band's concert setlists, recording schedules and personnel moves via the Internet. It was the fans, in fact, who demanded over the Internet that the band release the 23-minute version of _A Change of Seasons_. If it doesn't seem possible for a prog-rock band to boast such a fruitful following in the age of punk, ska and the Spice Girls, then you're not thinking globally. The group has as many faithful fans in countries such as Japan (where FII has passed the 100,000 sales mark after just a few months), Holland, Germany and Italy. "We're a pretty heavy rock band, and it's not out of style there," Petrucci said. "The kids there are really into rock 'n' roll, the heavy stuff, and I don't think success there is based as much on exposure you get on TV and radio and all. You don't have to be on Letterman to fill an arena over there." Not that the band is complaining about its fate in the States. It's label, Elektra, might want more hits, but its leaders seem to grasp the grassroots popularity of Dream Theater. "There's always pressure when you're signed to a major label," the guitarist said. "The reason that you're there and they keep you there is because you have the potential to have a hit. They want to hear songs on the radio. But with our band there's a little bit more of an understanding. We can go out and do real well without a lot of songs on the radio." "We have a lot of loyal fans that will buy the albums and go to the shows without the radio hits. We're very lucky." email: email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Nov 1997 18:19:38 -0500 (EST) From: Eric John Marlett To: email_address_removed Subject: Thanks Message-ID: >> btw...we've been using *two* spaces after a period, for quite a few >> decades now. :) > Um, only on a manual typewriter. We'll have to wait until Dec. 9th in the states to get it. From the reviews that I've been reading on alt.music.spacerock, this one is VERY guitar oriented! Personally...I'd go for Jurassic Shift. Arborescence was my first, but I like JS a little better. They had another CD out after Arborescence, but it wasn't released in the US. I've seen it listed as a lot of fans' favorite OT disc, but I've never heard it. There is a keyboard part right before JP's solo in ToT that sounds a LOT like the Tentacles. It's just a rising keyboard swell that has a lot of air (breathy?) behind it. Basically, they're highly derivative of Emerson Lake and Palmer, before ELP got cheesy. The vocals are a bit wimpy, but much much better than Greg Lake's. There are some rough points on the album, some cheesy sounding songs (Season of the Heart, World Divided ... which sound weak in parts), some heavier songs (not DT style heavy, but Yes style heavy), and "Ruins at Avalon's Gate," which is in parts almost *exactly* "Tarkus," but so much better composed. Out of the first batch of world-release Magna Carta albums, Cairo was my second favorite after Magellan. Then Magna Carta started putting out tribute albums and I haven't bought another one of theirs since. Now I'm so out of touch with the label it's not funny.
