To me WDADU is by far the most significant DT album... it started a huge change in the hard music scene, and is an evolutionary turning point for DT. I don't think the lyrics of any album (with a few exceptions on FII) can touch the lyrics on some of WDADU... the music is more raw and powerful than some of their other stuff... and I like Charlie's voice at times as much as LaBrie's. Somehow, I have to seriously doubt that I'm alone in this respect. I think there are a LOT of Charlie fans and WDADU fans on this list. I wouldn't give him the time of day. Anyone with obscure knowledge of a band and it's history can pull this type of thing off...particularly when you are as vague as XDTVOC1 is being. I learned that in middle school >> band when I was twelve. > > Especially bass, Piano, acoustic guitar, etc... Ok, I should have clarified... there are certain exceptions. Notice that all of the instruments you mentioned have relatively rapid decay times; after the initial attack on these intsruments you don't have alot of control over the note, unlike any wind instrument or VOICE, where you must supply a constant air flow... violin is this way too, although it's not air in this case. As someone said before, I believe that most any trained singer will tell you that vibrato is a natural part of good singing technique. Any singers want to back me up on this? Also, there are other exceptions; French horn players aren't generally taught to do much vibrato because the instrument naturally has such rich overtones... piano would probably fall into that category too, with such a large accoustic chamber, which would create alot of overtones. It's just not as necessary on extremely low instruments, either, since it becomes very hard for the human ear to distinguish subtle pitch variations at such low frequencies anyways. So there. -Clark ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Nov 1997 22:06:22 -0800 From: Arash Ashouriha To: email_address_removed Subject: Yanni's new album Message-ID: Hi Yanni's new album "Tribute" is awesome. Message-ID: > To me WDADU is by far the most significant DT album... it started a I have to disagree both with Chris and with the original poster here. First, a disagreement with Chris. I wouldn't say that WDADU is DT's most significant album, especially for the reason of starting "...a huge change in the hard music scene." I think that I&W was 100 times more important to that end. But, to disagree with the original post, WDADU is my favorite DT album behind FII, for all the reasons Chris mentioned. The sheer emotion, both lyrically and musically, just sucks you in at the first note and doesn't let go until *gasp* OAMOT, which is up there with TLF and LitS in my own personal list of "Greatest DT Songs." The lyrics alone are worthy of writing in indelible marker on your walls, and the music is simply breathtaking. That keyboard sound, reminiscent of the "fight charge" section in The Crimson Sunset of the Subcon ACoS, makes me play air-keys every time I hear it. > Somehow, I have to seriously doubt that I'm alone in this respect. > I think there are a LOT of Charlie fans and WDADU fans on this list. > So the answer to your question would probably be "I do," and I think > that's echoed by a several. I do. I think that Charlie was (is?) a great rock vocalist. I say that without reservation. Sure, he sucks compared to James, but who doesn't? If I'd never heard James, I would think that Charlie is a great singer, up there with the Coverdales and Dickinsons of the world. In my opinion, the other two Conception cds I own (and there are three others), "In Your Multitude" and "Parallel Minds", are every bit as good as "Flow." It seems that "PM" is a bit more straight-ahead pop/prog/metal a la Queensryche with Don Dokken singing, and "IYM" is more progressive in the DT mode (though the instrumentation is generally not as extensive) and my personal favorite. IMO, you couldn't go wrong buying either. I can't speak for the first cd, which I have heard isn't as good. *Shrug* >Are all of Gamma Ray's albums as good as "Land of the Free"? This would depend on what it is you like about "LOTF," really. There are three other Gamma Ray cds. "Heading for Tomorrow," "Sigh No More" and "Insanity and Genius" (Besides the live cd, which may actually be the best since it offers a good cross-section of all the cds, and gives examples of both vocalists' ability) all feature Ralf Scheepers on vocals, who, again in my opinion is much more talented than Kai Hansen. My favorite of the pre-TLOTF Gamma Ray cd is probably "Sigh No More," but most GR fans would probably disagree. Each of the cds features some great songs, and some that probably shouldn't have made the cut. Especially hilarious is the song on "HFT" that uses, to the note, Bette Midler's "The Rose" music. What is that called? The Silence, I think. Overall, I don't think you could go wrong with any of them, but the live 2cd set is probably the best idea. CD2 is a bonus disc featuring Ralf on vocals from the "I&G" tour. >Are all of Stratovarius's albums as good as "Episode" and "Visions"? In my opinion, no. I have just one other cd besides the two you mentioned, and it is no where near as good. I have "Fourth Dimension" which, I think is the first one with the present singer (I could be wrong, but I know he wasn't on some of the earlier cds). I would spend my extra cash on the cds from the first two bands you mentioned before delving into the Stratovarius back catalog. Yep I am one of them, remember long before JLB came along, WDADU with Charlie's vox were the DT only we had and so I think the longtime DT fans (myself since 1989) appreciate this album more as it was our first DT purchase. I still listen to it and love it and I often 'cringe' when I hear JLB singing WDADU material, it just ain't the same. For those who like WDADU music and not the vocals, there is a bootleg called 'Instrumental 1' that has several WDADU songs without vox and a couple of cool tunes that never made it to WDADU. On I&W he used basically two voices: the clean voice (UAGM) and the more "emotional" voice (not sure if this is vibrato or not) as found in WFS and the intro/outro parts of Surrounded. Both them were amazing. Then on Awake he experimented with harsher tone (Mirror, CIAW, 6:00, etc) while still maintaining the clean tone on some songs (IF) and the vibrato thing (TSM LSOAD). ACOS, as a whole was the more of I&W style and now with FII, he has added more weapons to his vocal arsenal, thereby making it the best representation of what he can do, IMHO. He's still got the clean thing going (LiTS, ToT, YNM), the vibrato in AL, HY, parts of TAMP (though not enough IMHO), and the harshness of BMS, JLMB. But he's doing things on this album I've never heard him do before. Listen to the verse after the guitar solo in BMS. I've never heard him sing like that. Or perhaps, more obviously, the first verse of NM. All of this adds up to a hell of a lot of options that he can draw on, which should make the next album very interesting indeed.
