I know a couple of you already from the first Houston Ytsevening in June, and now it's coming up again - a bunch of us Houston jammer types get together in a Houston restaurant and hang out for the evening. Last time was pretty good, even though only a few of us were able to make it that time. I'm hoping that more of us will be able to come out for a night this time so we can meet and maybe even set up a Houston DT concert mob for when they get down here in '98 (There are already unofficial plans to meet with some jammers from Waco coming down from the show). • The Place: Undecided ... Last time we met at Texadelphia off of Westheimer near the Galleria. It was a fine place to meet and would suit as a location again, or I'm open to any suggestions. • The Date: Right now, I am looking at Dec. 19th or 20th... that would be a Friday or Saturday night. If some of you will be out of town at that time, the weekend before will probably do as well. If you would be interested in coming out and having dinner with some Houston jammers, email me and I'll keep a running list of those who plan to come. Let me know if you have a good place to meet in mind, or if Texadelphia would be fine. Hope to see you there! · • Colonel Mustard • · email_address_removed · • Colonel Mustard • · ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Nov 97 10:51:15 -0600 From: "Brian Hayden" To: email_address_removed, email_address_removed Subject: General crap Message-ID: Responding to the message of from email_address_removed: > > > On Thu, Nov 06, 1997 at 04:16:59PM -0800, email_address_removed > wrote: > > Regardless, I don't think it's that big a deal at all, buying the CD that > > way. I only used CDR to thwart the argument of "I wanted the promo > copy because it's better quality than I could tape. (I don't have a CDR > myself). You don't thwart the argument at all, because a promo also has cover art, etc., as has been mentioned, and most people don't have easy access to a CD writer. I also have taped copies of many CDs, and I'm not a bit ashamed of it. These are CDs that I don't care enough about to get if I had to pay for them, so the artist loses nothing. There is a small store in Plano, TX called Bone Daddy's (near Preston and Parker, I think). They carry used, boot, and import CD's of most progressive bands mentioned here on the Jam...as well as lots of DT (one of the owners is a DT fan). They can also special order most items that don't have in stock. I built up most of my DT collection while living in Dallas, and I always got a good deal from Bone Daddy's. New subject: A friend at work gave me a copy of an article that appeared in Denver's Rocky Mountain News (Wednesday, Nov 5, 1997). It was almost a full page, on the front of the Arts and Entertainment section. Headlines read: "Tried and True. Fans stay tuned as progressive Dream Theater keeps bucking rock trends." It contains a 4"x4" color photo from the FII promo shots (the one with Derek's b&w shoes up on the coffee table). This article came out the day before they played in Denver last week. I was highly impressed by the writer of the article, Michael Mehle, Popular Music Writer for the RMN. He reported everything in a positive light, and even mentioned the Internet fans (probably a ytse-jammer himself!). I'll transcribe the article and post it up here later today. Take care! From what he writes, he appears to be.. rather stupid. Also, Well, I always thought CD was respectable on WDADU, but frankly, the guy was ditched because of musical differences. (On a side note, I wonder how he feels with FII being DT's most "pop" effort.) Still, it is still DT, and he really wanted to go a different way, so... go there. Go that way. She I was at Border's last night, with all of these listening stations. I saw her name at one, and I thought, well, I've heard her neame on the 'jam, why not. Put on the headphones and... WOW. I must have this CD. Everyone should. WOW. Clark Abel: > I've always thought that Awake was a model of modern hard rock >productioproduction. I think it sounds respectable on any soundsystem, and Amen to this. Couldn't agree more. No album approaches this for me in terms of sheer perfect production. > FII: More "pop-ish" than ACOS or Awake. >> I agree with you there. Yup, I'll throw my hat in on this one (see above, concerning CD). I've been debating this one quite a bit, in terms of how this fits in with other DT discs. I do think FII is great, but Awake struck a vibe that no other album approaches. The perfect production is a factor, but it's deeper than that. The song-writing is impeccably strong, the mix is perfect. And the last thing--I listened to Awake last night, paying particular attention to KM's parts. There's such emotion and anguish, from the keyboard sounds themselves, to the parts that he's playing. The key parts on songs like Erotomania, Scarred, Mirror/Lie, they bleed emotion. His unhappiness may be unfortunate, but those feelings led to what I particularly feel may be the single most powerful album of keyboard work that I've ever heard. Of course, SDV is the best example, but it really runs through the whole album. It's funny, I've listened to that album so many times, but last night, listening to it and thinking about where Kevin was, and the direction of the band, their stengths and weaknesses through experience, and now where the band has gone since then, I heard it anew all over again. I can truly appreciate what a brilliant album it is, what a musical landmark, possibly (probably) the greatest collection of musical work that I own. FII? Yeah, it's really good. Best thing I've heard in quite awhile (next to APSoG). Nothing approachers Awake, though. The emotions there, maybe because of Kevin, are too unique to be captured again. Sure, experiences will dictate new albums of different emotional context, but the intensity of Awake is a tough stick to be measured against. I personally think that Hollow Years may be the best performance yet by KJLB - he shows here that he doesn't need the help of an effect (vibrato) to show a lot of emotion. Open your mind a little. There's a lot of great music out there that doesn't use vibrato. For a kickass non-vibrato voice, check out Devin Townsend. K.
