Awake: Dark heavy and poorly meshed. This album is fantastic because it far outdoes the album before it (in sound quality) I hated I&W's sound. Everything sounded like a machine did it. Kind of like the first Collective soul album if you ask me. The "progressiveness" was at it's highest on that album (which was totally cool) but the sound just made me ill. Anyways, I like the heavyness to Awake, but it was so dark that if you don't have the correct system to listen to it on, you can't hear all of the parts, i.e. Myungs playing.. his playing is so heavy and low (drop b?) that he can't be heard on a shitty tapedeck.. I have to listen to it (to truely appreciate it) on my car stereo. FII: More "pop-ish" than ACOS or Awake. More marketable material and the sound is cleaner than both ACOS and Awake. Some sounds I don't like, but overall the album is a tight clean machine. I don't like some of the vocal changes i.e. Mike's voicebox on BMS and KJ's on BMS. But overall, a great album... Does anyone think that KJ is getting better as a singer with time? I am amazed at how great he really is. The first time I saw them play I wasn't happy with the way that KJ sang, but this last time all I could do was sing praises.... I personally think it's a great, great CD. There's some instrumental songs where James shows he can play, but in my oppinion, the two tracks with Devin Townsend on vocals, and the track where Chuck Billy sings, are the star of the show here. These songs are sung with some emotion that is really hard to describe, especially Chuck's, where he sings with a passion that I have not seen in any of Testament's CDs. The guy proves there that he can sing. If you get a chance, check it out. As for Charlie D... someone please ask him what his current plans are, as he obviously has some to get back into the music bizz... Killer of Virgin Mary. Then collapse in sheer ecstacy at this woman's talent. Albums > like this make me believe in magic. I cannot agree more. I've been a fan of Loreena for the past 4 years. She is one of the most talented musicians I have ever heard. She writes all her own music (some lyrics are traditional) and she plays guitar, harp, piano/keyboards and the accordian. Her music has an almost spiritual/etherial feel to it. Another thing about her is her album history, she relesed her first album as a self promoted independent and used the money from that to finance the next 2 albums. She now owns Quinlan Road records in Canada and has since recorded 4 more albums (Book of Secrets being the latest release) and has started using Warner Bros. for distribution, only for distribution! Her musical style is completely original and the fact that she owns the record company means her music isn't comprimised in any way shape or form. She writes what she feels and it comes across in the music. Another weird thing, for those of you who have extensive european death metal collections look at the liner notes an quite a few of them thank her in their credits. (Quite odd, death metal artists thanking someone who is considered 'New age folk') I highly recommend anyone who is interested to give Book of Secrets a listen, other albums of note by Loreena McKennitt are The Mask and Mirror, The Visit and Parallel Dreams. Message-ID: >Anyways, I like the heavyness to Awake, but it was so dark that if >the parts, i.e. Myung's playing.. his playing is so heavy and low (drop b?) >that he can't be heard on a shitty tapedeck. I've always thought that Awake was a model of modern hard rock productioproduction. I think it sounds respectable on any soundsystem, and incredible on a good one. The bass esp, it's so tight and clean sounding. Nice and punchy, without getting all sloppy sounding. And as far as it being hard to hear... I don't know, I would hardly say the bass is mixed too low in Awake, I think sometimes bass is just supposed to be felt more than heard. And oh my god, those kick drums. I was just listening to Awake last night at moderately high volume, and sitting kind of close to the speaker... there's just this little puff of air that hits you every time he hits a bass drum; it's so tight sounding, no rattling all the shit in the room, just a nice , quick kick in the ass. And everything is so clear on Awake. > FII: More "pop-ish" than ACOS or Awake. I agree with you there. >sound is cleaner than both ACOS and Awake. Whoah, here's where you lost me. Cleaner? I know that's not exactly a standardized term, so we may be using "clean" differently, but I think many parts of FII are a sloppy mess production-wise. They were always throwing in all these little noises and sound effects that serve no apparent purpose. I'm not talking about samples; just listen carefully and you'll just hear alot of noise. The whole thing just feels dirty to me. Part of this is just personal preference; I know alot of people have said it sounds like they were going for more of a "live" sound on this album, and I agree, but I hate it. Again, this is just me, but I don't understand why a band like DT would want a studio album to have a live type of sound. OK, maybe, to be fair, I should say a live "feel". I love improv in a live setting, and the looseness and extra emotion that you get in a live performance. But if you want that sound, I think you should just do a live album. When you do a studio album, it's kind of like you're creating what will be considered the difinitive version of that song throughout the rest of your career. To me, it justs seems like you'd want it to be perfect. But that's just my take on it. As far as James getting better as a singer, probably, but I think his vocals ruin a number of tracks on FII. Like HY, that flat (not flat flat, just w/o vibrato flat) singing style just grates on my ears. He has such a beautiful, natural sounding vibrato, but his voice just sounds dead when he sings like that. If you take one pitch and just try to hold it without any vibrato on any instrument it's going to sound crappy. I learned that in middle school band when I was twelve. -Clark ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 3226 **************************
