I'm good friends with the guy who is in charge of "stocking" the channels with music. He has been consulting me quite a bit concerning the Progressive and Great Guitar channels, as he knows that is the kind of music I live for :). I've been going through a lot of bands and CDs, helping him fill out those stations - you may notice that the majority of the bands that get played on those stations fall within the first half of the alphabet. We'll be working on the N-Z stuff in the coming weeks. Expect the content to be greatly enriched in about a month's time. Also, to the person who mentioned Superior, I'll be giving them a copy so you don't need to bother. I'm not sure if they have FII yet either, but that will soon be remedied :). And Ron Thal needs to make an appearance on Great Guitar.. later all, -Neil. I got it after reading a Guitar Magazine review describing them as Rush running into Vai and Satriani somewhere over the Rockies. Dave Beegle, their guitarist, uses a Transperformance guitar on some of the tracks. One of the songs was featured on a Guitar World compilation disc in the summer of '96. The last song on the disc, "Kara Kum," ends with a riff similar to the riff in Hell's Kitchen that begins on keys at 2:47 and then kicks in with bass and guitar at 3:01. (anyone else hear that?) The album clocks in at around 54 minutes, you can order their CD ($14) from Hapi Skratch Records, 2100 W. Drake Rd. Lead Guitarist is Morris Beegle. I used to play golf against his brother in high school. They have played in bars around here for a long time, and have at least two cds out now. I have em both...but it has been a while since that second one came out, so they might have a third. Morris is a great guitarist, and has taught a lot of people over the years. My fave is their version of "joy". Morris also used to play with another guitarist in a two-piece called the 'guitar dudes'. pretty amazing to read about them on the jam! but morris deserves it. he was also involved in (or did it himself) the invention of 'the first' self-tuning guitar. pretty interesting guy. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Nov 1997 15:46:52 -0800 (PST) From: Stephen Dedalus To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Please! I'm pretty impressed with the stuff I got!!! Trans-Siberian Orchestra's "Christmas Eve and Other Stories" is very beatiful, an incredible album. Maybe a perfect one for Rogério to show to his aunt. :) Not an album for those only metal lovers, as there's very low "metal sounding songs" on it. But a beautiful album indeed. Marty Friedman's "True Obsessions" is one of the most kick ass stuff I've heard lately. :) If in Megadeth he plays incredibly, with all those light fast solos, here he shows all his compositional skills, and does a superb work. It has a bit of everything: rock, metal, blues... Just perfect. I'm now hearing Symphony X's "The Divine Wings of Tragedy", which is sounding pretty cool. However I can't tell much, as this is still the second song. Jason Becker's "Perpetual Burn" is nice, with fast guitars all around, pretty cool. I didn't pay much attention to it, so I can't tell much. :) I haven't yet heard "Perspective"(which has arrived with the others), but I already know a little bit of it from Dan Souza's car coming back from the DT concert (Hi Dan! :) ). A note for Rogério: man, you'll love Trans-Siberian Orchestra. :) Really. No kidding. Hmm... ok, that's it for now. And, talking about orders... damn, my "Precious Things" has not arrived yet... that sucks... FRom what I've read at Mike's page, it has already been sent. The "bassolo" you know... It's not tight at all. Also > he plays a bit out of tune in the middle of Hollow Years. I don't know why well, I listened, but I didn't hear it at all. But I'll say this: there are certain things that one can do to change the feel of a song... subtle alterations, such as playing a little behind or in front of the beat, is a great way to completely change the feel of the song. Also, in hollow years, it was mentioned earlier that JLB is out of tune in some parts... This is another way to change the feel. Believe it or not, being sharp or flat by intervals will effectively chage the feel... Such as JLB's voice during the pre-chorus. Same with guitar... a 1/4 tone bend is a _lot_ different than the note played dry. My guess is that the places you mentioned are intentional, and done to accentuate the mood. Either that, or DT has lost it's touch and is headed towards musical incompetence. You decide... ;) DT in concert: > The medly stuff really teases you. Next time around, they should > play entire songs. 'The Mirror' was rocking but then they I hate to bring them up again, but I attended a metallica concert somewhere in '95... They played just about every song off the black album, but anything that was pre-Justice they mixed into a medly. I was fuckin pissed! They even started to play Master of Puppets, but cut off before the middle section (IMO the best part of that song. Possibly the best part of metallicas life!). Made me very upset. . . (then they asked if we wanted to hear some new stuff, and they played 'seek and destroy.' wtf?!). I hate that. .. DT is understandable, as not every setlist can handle ACOS in all its glory... but I hope they never lose sight of their old material (but then, this is coming from someone whose ideal setlist consists of all of WDADU and IAW, and two songs off Awake). . . Challenge: > OK, a challenge for the ytseworld. You've got one 90 minute tape, and > you've got to make a mix of Awake and FII on it. It's got to last > awhile. So you're in a room with Rush Limbaugh and Jesse Helms, and you have a gun but only one bullet. Who do you kill? Hmm. . in my estimation you can fit all of IAW and a bit of WDADU in 90 minutes. Save yourself the agony... ;) Just kidding.. . I've never responded to one of these posts. . lemme think. Here's my track list (in no particular order): Erotomania } Voices } some things were meant to be Scarred Peruvian Skies ( so beautiful. . . ) Hells Kitchen (notice absence of Lines in the Sand) Anna Lee (I don't care what they say! I love the song) Trial of Tears LSOAD (return of so beautiful) Space Dye Vest (revenge of the return of so beautiful) You not me (because something has to rock) Innocence Faded (yeah, yeah, gimme a break.. I just love the outtro jam!) 6:00 (I'm partial. . . it converted me) post too long. . . will end now... figuratively, Rich P.S. Someone mentioned jersey numbers... maybe some insane time signature from a DT song? If you can get the division symbol in there, it makes for a great conversation piece. . . ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Nov 1997 21:29:58 -0500 From: email_address_removed (Ernesto Schnack) To: Subject: Re: Mtv Latino and the Headbangers hour Message-ID: > Latino's version of the Headbangers Ball.
