What do you think about the fact that John Myung doesn't play in time at about 0:33 into New Millenium? The "bassolo" you know... It's not tight at all. Also he plays a bit out of tune in the middle of Hollow Years. I don't know why really because he's such a good player. He shouldn't have left it on the record if it wasn't for the new producer, at least I think that's the reason. I mean, if you compare Awake with FII it's quite a big difference in sound. FII is much more livesounding, which is cool, but it's irritating with that untight bass in the opening of the record. I don't think they would have left it in on Awake. I sent him mail and asked him several pointed questions (what have up been up to since leaving DT? how do you like FII?, etc.). He replied with one line: "Thanx, do you know the address for the ytsejam?" I gave him the address and asked him to answer my questions, and have yet to hear back from him. For someone wanting to "discuss DT," he sure seems to aviod the subject a lot. Who is he? Okay, ex-member of Testament, Obituary, Cancer, and maybe another band? Also formed his own band, Disincarnate, who released an album in 1993, I believe. Left Testament to focus on his solo album (on Shrapnel), called 'Convergence'. Good stuff. Does anyone know if Disincarnate have re-formed? James was also on the new Konkhra album, released this year, and on a number of tracks from the Rush Tribute album from last year..... Speaking of this guy, I am currently compiling the web's first, all-encompassing Testament Discography, which will also feature the works of all ex and current members, including James. For ANY releases James Murphy, Alex Scolnick, Greg Christian, Gene Hoglan, or any other ex-Testament member was on, I need catalogue numbers, countries of release, track and band listings. For Testament items, and I need any promo/single/bootleg info anyone out there has! As complete info as possible is always appreciated. Thanks! Seeya! Is the Thursday Night-Friday morning timeslot the only time they play the Headbanger's show, or is there other times? Thanks for the help! Indeed it looked pretty extravagant, probably was worth a few thousand Deutschmarks already back then, and I won't take an oath on whether it was just for custom order only, or produced in a teeny tiny series. Hmmm... maybe the mafia still has some... just kidding... I just remembered that Ibanez resp. Roland Meinl, their importer in Europe, in the late 70s had some strange policy of marketing prototypes via selected dealers, e.g. I got a 1977 Artist bass via Franz Ulrich (who alas went broke in 1980, otherwise I'm sure I'd seen the Roth signature at his place, too :-)) which totally differs from the crappy Artist they made back then otherwise (probably holds the world record in sustain even w/flatwounds :-)). (And don't bother to burglerize my house as I gave it to one of my pals :-)). Admittedly I didn't bother to do anything more than just take notice of it as something I found a bit weird in my youthful ignorance and naivity. The next times I came across 7 strings was when Juraj Galan -- who endorsed Ibanez, too... though I never saw this guitar on any other occasion again --, Norbert Doemling & Billy Cobham released "Cargo" in 1984 (which mostly freaked me for Doemling's Jazz Bass/piezo PU [mounted on the headstock!!!!] sound, not to speak of his playing -- which really had evolved considerably since the times of Missus Beastly and Toto Blanke --, though), and finally Vai in 1990 or so... Oh yeah, in case one can't decide whether to go w/a low B (or even detuned to A or G) or a high A there's also 8 strings (e.g. by Conklin who has the reputation to be good for just any weirdness anyway :-))... I've never heard of such a strategy... It has been more common these days, and some bands do need it, case in point the QR show. Not that I like them, but Motley Crue just did the same thing. When time passes, people change, and so do their musical tastes. They did well in the smaller theaters, so they decided to go on a big, arena tour. As I said, there will always be plenty of hardcore DT fans, but the number of "radio" DT fans will always change. -C# ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Nov 1997 14:02:25 -0500 From: "Christopher R. I don't think that the FII stuff is all that good. It is good because it is DT but it doesn't measure up to their other stuff. The medly stuff really teases you. Next time around, they should play entire songs. 'The Mirror' was rocking but then they start into another song. They also played 2 seconds of 'Fortune' at the very end which got me excited. Then they stopped. In case it hasn't been mentioned, Portnoy is on the cover of Modern Drummer. There is a really good article and interview!! Awhile back one of you Ytses mentioned going on a prog-buying fest and gave brief reviews for each of the discs. Whoever you were (sorry, I've deleted the relevant 'jam), I think you ought to give Magellan another chance. "Test of Wills" is a little like, but mostly very different from, their earlier stuff; if you don't care for it, pick up one of the previous discs and see what you think. I'd highly recommend "Impending Ascension" -- this disc is one of my top 10 discs of all time, prog-wise. Layers and layers of keyboards, Styx-like vocal harmonies, complex song structures, and cool song themes and subjects. This is a really excellent CD -- go get it. "Test of Wills" is different because the emphasis is less on keyboards and more on guitars. It's a lot heavier than "Impending Ascension", but it's still good; the best song, I think, is "Critic's Carnival". Angra, Symphony X, and Stratovarius get lots of discussion time here; I think Magellan deserves it too. Very talented band.
