Fortunatly there was a place to send feedback. I would encourage anyone to send them what you think of their "article", especially those of you who have experienced some of their bad behavior on stage. If any of you remember, I did say in my review of the Minneapolis show that I thought they were a good band. I would never have said, however, that they were the "real stars" because, quite frankly, they weren't. If anyone has articles reguarding professional musicians opinions of DT, send them that, too. Maybe their staff will do some research for a change. I've never heard of such a strategy... It seems to be happening a lot lately. Bands do it so that they can appropriately gauge how much of a demand there is and then plan their real tour accordingly. It makes much more sense than booking a huge tour and then underestimating or overestimating their audience in the certain areas. In DT's case, it makes that much more sense because they haven't had a real American tour for several years (the Fix shows don't count). Message-ID: Well, over the past 2 weekends, with Newbury Comics having a nice little sale on all CDs, I sorta went on a prog buying fest, purchasing 8 CDs total, and thought I'd do a little review of this mini prog fest. The CDs were: 1) Rudess Morgenstein Project 2) Shadow Gallery: Carved In Stone 3) Pink Floyd Us & Them Symphonic 4) Savatage: Dead Winter Dead 5) Savatage: Handful of Rain 6) Altura: Mercy 7) Enchant: Wounded 8) Magellan: Test of Wills. Of these, I had never heard anything from 2, 6,7, 8. Lets see, where to begin.... 1: Rudess Morgenstein Project: I was expecting alot from this CD, after seeing them open for DT at hte Toad's Fix show, and they delivered. The CD contains some really cool prog instrumental stuff... as with most instrumental music (Satriani, Vai, Jon Finn, Hoey), I have a hard time associating specific song names with songs, so I won't try to name the cooler songs, but the CD has soem incredible tracks, and (hmm, I wonder why) reminds me of later Dixie Dregs CDs such as Full Circle... 2: Shadow Gallery-- Carved In Stone: What can I say, these guys just blew me away, I just wasn't expecting what I heard, some cool music, blended with cool lyrics, then, out of nowhere, a flute... Yeah, a flute, was not expecting it to arrive, but gives them a very distinct classical (almost early European 'Robin Hood' type) feel... This CD is definatly a good purchase for any prog collector 3: Pink Floyd Symphonic Us & Them: For those who have not heard of this, basically, a few years ago, the London Symphony Orchestra got together and covered some tunes from The Wall & Dark Side of the Moon. The overall effect is pretty good, gives a completly new approach to the songs. 4: Savatage-- Dead Winter Dead: Again, what can I say, I heard parts of this CD thanks to Jeremy Hallum, but still was amazed once I actually got the CD and started to listen to it more carefully. They do a cool job at prog, and include some true classical influence (including some Mozart & Beethoven). I had not realized until I got the CD that it was a concept album, and they do a good job at keeping the flow. There are some more heavy tracks, and some cool lighter ones, and ends with a cool vocal track with overlapping lyrics (am not sure for the musical name for this). Another CD I would definatly recommend for the prog collector. 5: Savatage-- Handful of Rain: I bought this after listening to Dead Winter Dead for a week, with some high expectations. I was almost let down after the first track, Taunting Cobras, which is a pretty heavy track (a little too heavy for myself) but was immedialty relieved once I heard Handful Of Rain and the rest of the CD. 6: Altura: Mercy-- One of the most progressive CDs that I bought, has some really intricate music. Have not finished listening to it, but also worthwhile 7: Enchant: Wounded-- Another band I had never heard other than recommendations here, and what else, anther great recommendation from the Jam. Only listened to this once, but they seem well worth it, another pretty progressive band, and another must get. I now need to go out and find Bluepringt of the World. I think they had iot at Newbury, but dudn't want to get 2 CDs by a band I had never lstened to. 8: Magellan: Test of Wills-- This is the one CD I am not sure about, the music sounds clear, but this seems to be another case where, as of now, I don;t like the singer and will have a tough time getting past him. Hopefully, I can, b/c they seem to sounds pretty cool otehr than him.. Anyway, just thought I'd give some of my impressions after this spending spree. -- +------------------------------------------+-----------------------+ | A daily dose of eMpTyV | Dream Theater | | will flush you mind right down the drain | Falling Into Infinity | | --- taken from: Just Let Me Breathe --- | In Stores NOW!! | +------------------------------------------+-----------------------+ Michael Burstin: email_address_removed Oh my God, they've killed Kenny!! http://www.cs.brandeis.edu/~mikeb/ Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial Email: http://www.cauce.org ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Nov 1997 21:12:32 -0500 (EST) From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: San Diego show thoughts Message-ID: Just saw DT for the first time last night at 4th and B in San Diego. First of all the band sounded absolutely perfect. I didn't expect James to sound near as good as he did. Derek looked a little weird but those keys sounded NASTY!!! I'm so glad DT got him. Kevin Who? They played most of the new album. Stayed away from the slow songs, except Hollow Years. Surprised us with Scarred and all of Voices. Finished up with Metropolis which I guess is the standard encore song. One complaint was that there were a lot of losers just sitting up in the bleachers, not even applauding and not standing up until the show ended. One question: Does James always run back and forth off and on the stage during songs? What the hell for? He came out limping at the end of the show after "wiping out backstage" during the Metropolis encore. Bottom line: the band sounded very tight and Harder than ever. you've gotta see it !!!! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Nov 1997 21:14:28 -0500 (EST) From: Syrinx To: A Ytse Besides Itself Subject: Fuck help, i'm famous. :) Message-ID: > I am getting a jersey for our broomball team here at school. Well, I never saw Billy Joel being mentioned, but QR and Kansas are not as 'progressive' as DT in that there's not much crazy instrumental sections (maybe he got tired of having to wait on stage while the guys played?:)... well Kansas did once...and your musical tastes can vary from your idols' with time...one perfect example would be Kevin Moore. Um, just curious, but when did Uli start using Ibanez? I know he uses 7 strings, but he uses a high A string, to my knowledge, and I've seem him playing only a very specific type of guitar that looks very little like an Ibanez. If this guitar was ever released, not only would I expect it to be IMMENSELY expensive (since it's rarity seems to have escaped me and all of my many 7 string cohorts) but also difficult to come acress. As for string gauge, as a 7 string player, I know for a fact that most manufacturers will make strings up to and far beyond the .60 gauge. Make concern #1 getting your hands on the guitar. The strings are as simple as an order away. Take care! I can only describe the whole cd as "The middle of Metropolis on crack". Artension-Phoenix Rising- "The classically influenced keyboard based progmetal/classic rock extravaganza of the year." I just made that up. I have no idea what it means. It's a pretty good disc, though. If you like the first one, it won't disappoint. Btw, one song features a solo by James Murphy, who has a solo cd on Shrapnel. Who is he? Savatage-The Wake of Magellan-I love Savatage, but this is not their best. It's good, but sounds kind of predictable and familiar. I also think they're overdoing the counterpoint thing. As much as I like it, I hope they skip it on the next one.
