I have his first two solo projects (I'm not sure if he had more) and I love them. If you get into good guitar works like Eric Johnson's, there's a pretty good chance you'll like Rik's solo stuff. It's mellow but very talented and well done. My third post in two days. A new personal record. The German TV station RTL2 is currently showing a few of the 'Nightmare on Elm Street' movies. Today I saw a little trailer for part 4, the background music sounded kind of familiar, and suddenly I realised that it was actually 'You Not Me'! I think they used the opening riff and that groovy ending part. Ok, this doesn't really sound like an exciting story (and it probably isn't) but that moment of recognizing the song was kinda cool... Lucky me. I was browsing the WEB looking for DT stuff - and accidently stumbled across the tour dates, less than a week before the show here! I had no idea they were gonna be here otherwise! Anyhow, I went to the show here on Devil's Night (My first DT show). A few observations: 1. Yes, Portnoy did look like Animal from the Muppets. My girlfriend pointed it out to me, and I totally agreed. 2. Yes, DT did ROCK. No doubt about it. 3. I saw the post about them playing some VH covers at one show. Wish I would have seen that! (Big VH fan) 4. Okay.....this is a gripe, but don't get pissed and bite my head off. I thought the sound was a little "out of place" for the show. By this I mean that I thought it was too loud (or maybe just too much bass, I dunno). It seemed to me that many of the subleties and complexities of their music seemed lost in the noise. I mean, I don't think of DT as an exceptionally "hard", or "heavy" band, yet with the sound-level, they sounded to me as being "heavier" than Metallica and Corrosion of Conformity when I saw them live. I dunno, this may have had alot to do with St. Andrew's Hall being so small perhaps. Anyhow, this is just my opinion, and I'd like know if others who saw the St. Andrew's show (or any others) had similar feelings about this? Thanks, Joe ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Nov 1997 18:59:17 -0700 From: "Tom Baddley" To: Subject: Colorado Springs vs. Denver Message-ID: <01bcebe9$ec1c0d60$message_id_removed> Thanks to Eric from Denver for making me feel much better. I was really kicking myself in the ass for not driving 70 miles to CO Springs for that show. But I got the impression from James that it didn't go over too well. He said "It was like playing in a high school cafeteria" at the Denver show. You got UaGM that night...but it's heart-wrenching to hear classics like that messed up by sound related problems. Glad they had that worked out in Denver. This would have been a great show to have recorded. But from the frisking I got entering the venue, I doubt anyone managed to get a recorder inside. Hopefully, the band was recording from the soundboard. Maybe we'll see something from this set show up on a live CD (wishful thinking?!). I'd buy it. I was so tired last night while posting the Denver review...some things that I realized that I omitted. James overall was in prime form. I worried when I heard he was sick that the combination of altitude (mile high!) and his cold could really affect his performance here. Not to worry, he only took the "low road" on the end of Metropolis, after he had blasted his vocals on NM / CS. His presence was much more relaxed and energetic than when I've seen them before. I like the spins! Much better than the left-foot-kick-back that NotCornell kept doing during the BW set. He did complain about the altitude a couple of times...but hey, I understand what it's like to come from sea level and try to breathe those first few days...much less, sing like JLB. Mike, of course, was the complete showman...entertaining us throughout the night with his antics. Whoever posted the original message re: TheDJ Player...thanks! I've been using RPP for quite a while now, and this is the best use of it I've found yet. Great playlists! My first connection yielded DT's Light Fuse aGA. I've had a chance to hear some new (for me) stuff from Phish, Bela Fleck, Aquarium Rescue...and then back into DT's Perfect Stranger (although it was listed as Rover!)...right now they're playing Yes - Yours is No Disgrace. What a great tune. Notice how geared to polling TheDJ is? They get their demographic info from you when you sign up (age bracket, gender, geographic location), and they also give you a chance to rate the songs. Do you think their stats showed a significant increase in hits on the Progressive channel after the message was posted here on the Jam? I bet it did. BTW...TheDJ Player (downloadable non-browser interface) works much better than a registered version of RealPlayer Plus 5.0 and IE 4.0 with their web page. O.K...they just ran me off of the progressive channel with a really bad Eno tune...now listening to Chet Atkins on the Great Guitar channel. The best one for a first time listener will be King X - Greatest Hits. It's going to be released in the U.S. this Tuesday (Nov. 11), but I'm not sure about your area. It'll have songs from all of their CD's as well as two new songs that sound really good. Their style has varied quite a bit since their earlier CD's. Their last one, Ear Candy, was kind of psychedelic and song oriented. Their earlier albums like Gretchen Goes To Nebraska and Faith Hope Love were more jam oriented, and have incredible vocal harmonies, which they have toned down somewhat over the course of their albums (Dogman, in particular..although it's the "hardest" album). The new CD will cover all this ground, and give you a better idea of which one to pick up next. I love 'em all, but I think GGTN is my current favorite Sorry for lack of DTC. It seemed to me that many of the subleties and complexities of >their music seemed lost in the noise. .. >opinion, and I'd like know if others who saw the St. Andrew's show (or >any others) had similar feelings about this? Indeed. The sound was quite dissapointing to me. James would be too quiet for one part of a song, then he'd walk off stage and come back a couple minutes later after a rippin' solo and be so loud you couldn't hear the rest of the band. And speaking of rippin solos, Whenever there was a key or geetar solo it was just painful for me. Many people have complained about the high (oops) I mean low end being too loud, but personally it was the high end that was killing my ears. I don't know if anyone else noticed it, but whenever there was a keyboard solo it was accompanied by a hideous high-frequency shriek that was playing cruel games with my ears. I think this high-end- low-end thing depended on where you were... I spent most of the show in the balcony, but after a while I couldn't take it anymore (I was seriously concerned about permanent damage to my ears and I had no earplugs) so I went down to the floor, and the sound, while still not great, was much better there. Incidentally, this was the only concert I've ever seen where the drummer played double bass where I didn't think the low-end went to shit whenever he started cranking away... If I had a complaint about the drum mic'ing it would be the splash or crash cymbals or whatever, those I thought drowned out all the guitar and keyboard parts. I think most of these problems were probably due to a shitty sound system at Saint Andrew's; I almost wonder if they were just pushing it too hard... by far the loudest show I've ever seen. Oh, well, it was my fault, I was going to buy earplugs before the show but I thought I'd be a man... :( Still a good show, but leads were definitely hard to hear. I just hope they don't play there again. Oh, yeah, while I'm on the topic of the Saint Andrew's show, someone posted a little while ago about how you couldn't blame James for a weak stage presence, since he was sick. Well, I don't know if it was because he was sick or because more than one step in any direction would have put him face first into another member of the band or their respective equipment, but I'm personally glad we were spared his dance routine. I've heard he's toned it down recently anyways, though. -Clark ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 3220 **************************
