At one point some guy is saying, "you're 21 and I'm 30....," then a girl says, "...age shouldn't matter." Where is this from? It's not the same sample used on Awake...at least not that portion. Also, according to the FAQ, SDV hasn't been played live. So, why is it on the "Uncovered" boot recorded at the Ronnie Scott's gig? Just wondering?? BTW, to anyone who hasn't bought "Spinning Years," GET IT. Its great and where else can you get over 11 hours of DT for $22? Great job Ryan! Also, to the guy who suggested making CD-R copies as an alternative to buying promo copies...WTF?? First of all, many people buy promo's for the collectability alone. They're rare and interesting items for a serious collector. Plus, simply burning a copy of said-CD will get you only the music, not the cover art, liner notes, lyrics, CD-design and so on that come with the original CD. Most promos included these things. Yes, I bought my legit copy of FII on the release date, but I'd pick up the first promo I could find as well. ~Matt ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Nov 1997 08:35 -0800 (PST) From: Edwin Voras To: Ytsejam Subject: RE: da jaaaaaaamz Message-ID: <19971107153902.GLVH4591@[166.33.99.41]> Ærnesto wrote: > > >hmm, i dunno, what about the middle sections to NM,PS, LITS, and JLMB; the >unison licks on HK...the band jams are still there. It's kinda strange but i've noticed that while on some songs on FII they've really kind of simplified or streamlined their ideas on other songs they've done something they've never really done before on a studio album and that's improvise. That's one reason I like this album so much, it's the diversity. Don't get me wrong I love Metropolis and the long instrumentals like that but there was no improv there. Being a Jazz lover I enjoy the spontaneity of improv which is something I love about OFB live. Now to have that on an album, all I can say is YES!!!! >Cool idea for a bootleg: It wouldn't be a big seller, but it'd be pretty >cool to have a boot made entirely of live improv jams...im sure many >musicians would be interested in that. > > I would be up for that. Enough questions or what? :) Some time ago Sepultura's Fan Club here was making a giveaway, offering one of Andreas Kisser's guitars, a custom 7-string with the band's "S"-logo carved in the wood. And I think it's a totally valid opinion. We agree on most points here. As far as trying to prove a difference between copying tapes and buying promos, as far as support is concerned, I never said there was a difference. Either way the band doesn't profit, I understand that. The difference is that you get a better copy; that's what you pay for. And I've bought a few promo albums in my life, but I think the next time I see one for ten dollars, which is not uncommon, I'm going to go up to the owner and have a little chat with him. Message-ID: hey, I wonder, if I'm right about DT having to compromise because of their record company (three ballady songs on the album, bringing in Desmond Child), if any other prog bands that have changed (Genesis, Rush, Gentle Giant, ELP, Jethro Tull, Camel, Pink Floyd, as my friend Chris pointed out) faced those same pressures. I know Rush did before 2112, and if that record wasn't as successful as it was, there would have been problems. It's strange--I read various interviews, and they confuse me. In one, they'll say, well, we realized that Awake was too heavy, so we tempered that. Then, James says, we're going towards more Rush/Floyd, trying to tap into those audiences. Then Portnoy says, in the last 'jam, as long as I'm in the band, we'll still have some of that longer progressive stuff on every album. All this stuff... it sounds like there are obvious external pressures, but maybe also... some strife within. I mean, James goes on record saying they're pushing towards Rush/Floyd, Portnoy talks about how he wants to do a concept album and he wants to stay long and heavy, and the Johns profess how they're striving for a balance. I remember reading that, when they played some free show at a record show, Mike pissed James off a little by throwing all these fills into Hollow Years. Could Mike be a little bored with some of the new stuff? It seems that, of all the band members, Mike and Kevin James seem the furthest apart, concerning the band's direction. Maybe there's something to that, maybe not.... Don't think I'm stirring anything up--for the record, so nobody gets this wrong, I HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE of any interior strife within the band. Strife is even a strong word--maybe just a little bit of underlying tension. Besides, seeing how they seem to be having a lot of fun live, by all accounts, there's also a lot of evidence pointing to the happiness of the band. Maybe my worries get me carried away--but maybe there's something there.... Well, comment away, if anybody wants.... Features the incredible Oteil Burbridge on bass, who is one of the greats. Highly recommended.
