Well....skimming through a whole buncha jams, I didn't happen to notice anyone ever explain what the story is behind the lounge version of UAGM. Luckily, I remembered to ask Mike when they were here on Monday. The story is that some fan in Japan actually put this together. Somehow (Mike didn't go into detail) the band got a hold of it and decided to use it as "outro" music after each show. The funny thing is, is that the person who did this is not aware of the fact that DT is using it (that is until they read this post or they see a DT show). None the less, it was a cool version that me, Bigman and others kind of swayed/danced to. Would've fit well on Pat Boone's "In a Metal Mood" CD. Another thing that I asked was what happened to the beloved Dream Theater font which is lacking on the FII cover. According to Mike, Storm prefers to find a font that matches the cover instead of using an established logo/font. While I understand this viewpoint, I still miss that logo/font. Mike did point out that the Majesty symbol is still on there (thank God!) but that it's time to move on (which I'm *guesing* means no more classic DT logo/font). I asked the Silent Man if he had any plans to incorporate the Stick in some of the older tunes and he mentioned that at least for now, he's gonna just use it for NM - I'd sure love to see what he could do with some of the older songs if he did play Stick on them (maybe he will eventually.....) Funny comment that some fan standing next to me exclaimed "WOW - look at that bass!!!!" when they began to play NM. Heh, tried to explain to him that it's not really a bass - dunno if he heard me or not. To the Jammer who was asking whether the demos for Speak to Me and TAMP (on the bonus 3" Jap CD) were gonna be released as B-sides, my guess is no. Considering that there are 4 other unreleased songs as well as demos for the other 9 songs, I would guess they'll use these others first (as I mentioned before, HY will have "You or Me" and "Where Are You Now"). My recommendation is to get the Jap copy. Additionally - just got back from seeing Sarah McLachlan. By all means, if you have the slightest inkling to see her - DO IT!!!! She put on an excellent show and apparently this is her last tour (someone feel free to correct me if this is wrong). Word has it that she's gonna be doing the family thing (having kids) after this tour. I guess she may put more Lilith Fair tours together, but that's it. Wew! Well, that's it for the moment. Next concert in 11 days (which is DT in Madison - yeah!!!!) Well sure, because you also think everyone has a CDR player just lying around. I sure as hell don't. What if you saw FII lying on the street, in perfect condition, still wrapped? Would you really walk right past it and buy a copy? Why, to support the band? You might as well send them a check if that's where your priorities lay. What if you want to save money, but you want the CD too? I totally understand the desire to help ofb whenever possible, we all want to see the next release, but is the burden really on us? We've all "supported" them many times over. I'm sure that guy has bought plenty of dt related stuff like the rest of us. Nay, the burden of support lies on the *rest* of the world that hasn't yet been indoctrinated. DT won't get any more popular from the method in which one obtains his copy of FII. However, the *will* get more popular by said obtainer *playing* it, and getting others to listen and convert them. *that's* support. And, I don't think dt would want to know that someone is putting them before meals or school, which may or may not have been the case in this scenario. I'm not sure. Saving money is absolutely an excuse. I'd love to support dream theater but If I had to support myself first, then that goes first. I bought my copy legit, but who's to say, if someone hadn't waved a promo copy in front of me, whether I'd take it. I'll buy all them! Their latest album is called 'Nighttime Birds'. After 'Mandylion', it's the second album which features Anneke as singer. IMO, 'NB' is even more sophisticated than 'Mandylion' with even more impressing vocals. It's a MUST if you like 'Mandylion' > * why are they considered *death* metal? I don't understand, since >it has no elements that I would associate with death metal (speedy guitar, >grows, fast double-bass, fast songs). Just very curious. They used to have kind of death metal vocals when they started. If you are into that kind of vocals, give the earlier albums a try. There should have been three albums before 'Mandylion', if I'm not mistaken. They all feature male vocals. Well, IMO, the band found their unique style with 'Mandylion', the earlier albums are not very special. I'm not intending to continue to hash this out, but I did want to respond to this particular comment to make sure I wasn't misundertood in my last post. My point was that buying a promo and copying someone else's CD (whether CDR or tape or whatever...) supports the artist the same amount (none monetarily). I only used CDR to thwart the argument of "I wanted the promo copy because it's better quality than I could tape. (I don't have a CDR myself). As for copying itself...I completely disagree with copying complete albums from other people. The extent of my copying for other people are sampler albums (songs from multiple artists) to instill interest. (sorry...I'm still going....) The arguement about the fact that your still supporting the artist because you've bought other albums and you're playing the promo to other people who will in turn buy the album because they like it, is the *exact* same arguement I hear from numerous people who copy albums from their friends for themselves. If you could convince me that buying a Promo is *ANY* different than taking your friend's CD and making a copy (in respects to supporting the band), then I would have reason to reconsider. However, currently, I cannot see any difference other then you're out $X and some schmoe just made money off something he or she got for free. > The only shithead in this story is the putz(what I called him the first time, > too!) that sold the thing, in order to increase *his* profit margin. And yes. I agree with this. But by buying his CD, you're supporting him. And to cap this off, I'll explain the reason WHY I feel this way. I used to copy tapes from friends every now and then (we would record stuff from each other) and I've bought a couple dozen promos in my lifetime. However, I currently have several friends that are musicians (I'm not one myself) and I see how hard they work. It has really opened my eyes to what effect it can have when even though you may sell 100,000 albums, there may be many more out there that are copies or promos or etc.... that should have been sales (and this comes from the fact that I don't view a promo as any different than a copy when you, as the consumer, own it). Anyway, this is obviously all my opinion, and I don't expect everyone to have the same. -- Mike Jones, email_address_removed __________ Cappy _________ email_address_removed Progressive Genius ( http://www.progmetal.org ) Progressive Metal Web Ring ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Nov 1997 18:58:23 +1000 From: Nigel Bridgeman To: email_address_removed Subject: thedj Message-ID: Decided to have a bit of a look in the progressive channel, and what's the first song I hear? Met up with NightCast, who had driven all the way from Salt Lake City (Utah YTSEJAM plates) to see the show (nice meeting you, man...thanks for the ride to the show). Nice venue, too. They had a great balcony with seating. The spacing between rows was huge...and allowed me to stretch out and enjoy the show. With a unobstructed view of the entire stage, I witnessed the best DT concert that I've ever seen (and I've seen 3 before now). The floor below me was packed with people who stood completely still throughout the entire Big Ereck set. Like everyone has said, they just don't fit into a DT show. Not that bad...but I laughed to myself quite a bit watching NotLifeson, NotCornell, NotAment, and NotRhythmic bang out their set to a completely unresponsive crowd. Maybe hearing about them bad-mouthing the crowd in Chicago gave me a bad taste towards these guys (they didn't make any comments tonight)...but I guess they could have been worse. Anyway...after BW left the stage, they played the FII Demos CME / RtK / WAYN / ? They only played a snip of another song I didn't recognize, then they cut to Rooster. Setlist (w/ notes) 11/06/97 Denver, CO : LiTS (Derek opening it up. James sings Doug's part. MP & JP sing James' part. Very f**King good!) BMS (James trys to get the crowd to sing into his mike...not entirely sucessful) Voices (voice clip on only the highest note...but James went for it, and hit everything else and then some.) HY (w/ 6-String B/W Picasso...no double-neck for John tonight. Solo was really nice, though.) Puppies on Acid --> Crimson Sunrise JLMB (w/ working megaphone (!) on first two choruses...chorii?) Tease - VH - Everybody Wants Some PMU (James sang Hamlet part at the end. How can I still listen to this song...and still love it?!! I'm sick. Tease - VH - Mean Streets (w/ vocals on 1st line...James does Roth almost dead on) Tease - VH - Hot for Teacher TAMP (1 verse Demo style, 2nd verse FII style. JM on 6-string) Scarred (I had to change my pants...scary good.) Darkest of Winters --> YtseJam (w/ short drum solo and Mike introducing Derek before (Kevin's) keyboard solo "This is Derek Sherinian, he wrote this." ?!). NM (JM on Chapman Stick...this was simply incredible. This song rocks HARD live!) Unknown Jam --> Crimson Sunset Tease - Fortune In Lies Tease - Lie Encore: Met. Pt. 1 (w/ new middle jam...very funky! I wish they'd do a whole song in this vein...maybe Met. Pt.2?!) Mike also sang part of a song while playing drums (right after James was thanking everyone, saying that they would be back in Colorado in '98, before "Before the leaves have fallen...")...I don't know what it was, though. Anyone? Lights Up...Harry Connick Jr. sings Under a Glass Moon...heheh...too funny. I like the way James had to drop so low on the bridge ("Beneath a summer sky...") Since I knew it was going to play, I sat and watched the expressions on people's faces as they slowly recognized the lyrics. There was some funky dancing going on to this tune! The guys were really dead on tonight. The two hour set just flew past before I knew it. This was also the first DT concert that I've seen where the sound for the band was perfect from the very beginning. I only heard one single dropout on JP's guitar (switch to flange during DoW), and it was corrected quickly. Most importantly, they didn't screw up JM's solos in NM or Met. No screeching feedbacks. All the mikes worked. Mike must have jumped the sound guys ass after the screwups a week or so ago, because the mix was almost perfect. Obviously, it's always going to be hard for Myung to be heard over Mike's double bass sections....but I could finally hear him everywhere else. Derek was much entertainment...and he played better than I ever saw Kevin play live (no offense...but MHO). It makes me feel good to have someone in the band who is so totally into being a part of Dream Theater. And he seems to be having a lot of fun, too! In fact, the entire band seems to have really loosened up. Hell, I saw JM's face a bunch tonight. They all seem to be genuinely enjoying themselves, and it showed through in their performance. The setlist that they have more or less standardized works really well...with no loss of momentum. On top of all this, they have really got something going with the two and three part vocal harmonies. Great job, guys! I know that JP and MP aren't "real" singers ;-) ...but they're not bad...and they add so much more to the live show. There was one moment, however, where they all sounded so full together, that it almost made James sound thin for a moment when they dropped out. Regardless, I hope to hear more harmony from them in the future (maybe a King's X influenced tune?!). I also loved the samples that MP covered (Step right up folks / Keep Your Head Up ). All in all, a fantastic show. They said they'd be back in Colorado in '98. I can't wait to see them again....maybe they'll sneak us a listen to Met. Pt.2 by then! I still have to work in the morning...so I'm cutting this entirely too lengthy post off now.
