I'll be there. Look for me, I'll be wearing . . . ummm, I don't know, just email me if you want. I'll add one more thumbs up to Echolyn and Finneaus Guage. Echolyn was the first cd I picked up as a recommendation from this list a couple years ago, and at first I was a little surprised, not really into it. But after a while I came to love it, and went on to get Finneaus' cd (and shirt). So to all of you thinking about it, go get it. -Brian Anderson ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Nov 1997 21:09:13 -0600 From: Chad Allen Klunck To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 3213 Message-ID: > To answer the vulgar question, though, a lot of women are attracted to > men that are effeminate. There's no question that *some* moderation is needed on a list of any decent size. Things'd go to hell without Skadz. You'd be reading 2 pages of advertisements for sex-chat, people's top 10 foot odor control products, that forwarded lightbulb joke about 1000X, chain letters... You get the idea. It's not a pretty picture. But excessive moderation is also bad in my eyes, for this reason... (see below) >I appreciate being on the Ytsejam, but the fact that more than half >of the posts are NDTC is annoying. Maybe it's just me, but I like NDTC. It's one of the only ways I find out about new bands, concerts for non-DT bands, all sorts of useless trivia... It's a way to buy good CDs cheap from people you can trust a bit further than as far as you can see (yes, there's a few "problem traders", but we won't get into that!). If it weren't for NDTC, I wouldn't have half the CD collection I have now. I wouldn't have gone to several of the concerts I heard about only through this list. It's a service in a lot more than providing rehashed DT trivia and occasional news. People come on here expecting to get DTC, and they get bombarded with all sorts of stuff. Some take to it, others don't. I guess I did. BTW, the analogy I've used to describe the Ytsejam to people on other mailing lists... "It's like a town in the Wild West. You've got your sherriff, Skadz, but he's in the saloon getting tanked. Meanwhile all sorts of crap goes down in the street outside. As long as it's not too loud, he stays in the saloon. But, if somebody makes *too* much noise..." >Besides, if you don't like TNMS, you can subscribe to other Rush mailing >lists. Oops, they don't exist? As some Ferengi I know would say, take it >as an opportunity! Nah. I learn enough Rush current events right here! Ged bless NDTC... Brian "Perambulator" Henderson =========================== Name: W. Here's my review of the 10/29 Toronto Dream Theater show that came out today in the Campus Times, our student newspaper here at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. Add in the usual copyright message here, but hey, I wrote it anyways. :) You can also find this article at http://www.ct.rochester.edu in the Features section. Enjoy! Jeremy Dream Theater wows its enthusiastic crowd By Jeremy A. Smith Senior Staff Writer Progressive rock band Dream Theater mesmerized its audience Oct. 29 at The Warehouse in Toronto. The Long Island-based quintet displayed its incredible technical ability during this stop on its first full tour in over two years. Boston's Big Wreck opened the show, combining funky basslines and classic shredding guitar solos with an alternative rock sound. The lead singer varied his sound throughout the band's seven-song set, often sounding like a cross between Dave Matthews and Bush's Gavin Rossdale. While they were pretty good for an opening band, their style didn't fit well with the more refined headliners. At the start of Dream Theater's performance, the theme music from the movie "A Clockwork Orange" began to play over the speakers. Moments later, keyboardist Derek Sherinian took his place on the stage and broke into the opening bars of "Lines in the Sand," a 12-minute mini-epic from the band's new album, "Falling Into Infinity." Musical mix Sherinian and guitarist John Petrucci constantly explored new melodic directions, jumping between the hard-rocking "Under a Glass Moon" and "Burning My Soul," to the emotional "Voices" and "Take Away My Pain," a song Petrucci had recently written and dedicated to his late father. Singer James LaBrie was in great form. He had the crowd chanting along with the band's fast and furious jab at the music industry, "Just Let Me Breathe," and sent a chill up its collective spine with the passionate "Scarred," from Dream Theater's previous album, 1994's "Awake." Petrucci occasionally joined LaBrie on backup vocals. While he added another dimension in harmonizing, sometimes he seemed to give support to the fact that the guitar is really his true calling. Bassist John Myung provided a steady foundation for the rest of the band, often coming to the forefront to add his own melodic contributions with his thick-sounding six-string bass. For "New Millennium," from "Falling Into Infinity," he even took out the rarely-seen Chapman Stick, a 12-stringed instrument similar to a bass that is played by tapping, rather than plucking the strings. Animal Drummer Mike Portnoy was a monster all night. He often resembled Animal from "The Muppet Show" behind his huge Tama drum set, hitting everything within reach at lightning speed and incredible precision. Portnoy was also the band's cheerleader, keeping the crowd clapping and singing along constantly while engaging in the usual theatrics of stick-flipping and cymbal-spinning. The band mixed its selection of songs well for the concert. The members went back to their first album, 1989's "When Dream and Day Unite," to play the instrumental "The Ytse Jam" (a reversal of the band's original name, Majesty), during which Portnoy had a brief but entertaining drum solo. They played their best-known song, the driving "Pull Me Under," from their 1992 breakthrough album "Images and Words." The band also interspersed throughout the concert bits and pieces of their 23-minute magnum opus "A Change of Seasons" from their 1995 EP. Dream Theater capped off the night with the crowd favorite "Metropolis." They finished off the song with teasers from two of their classics, "A Fortune In Lies" and "Lie" and sent the crowd into an eruption of cheers with a piece of Metallica's "One." True. No matter > what, DT suffers here. Not necessarily. As I mentioned before promos are used for, amoung other things, in-store play, radio, and press reviews, all of which are supposed to generate sales at retail by getting both the name and the sound out there. Yes, bands do suffer initially because of a lack of royalties on the promos. But if they have an effective promotion and marketing stratedgy, promos can be worth their wait in gold. Think about it: how many reviewers would pay to review an album buy a band that they probably have never heard of? The fact that there are those on this list that first heard about DT from reading a review proves the positive aspects of free goods. In fact, I believe they are the only ones who > don't make a profit off the promo. However, it doesn't matter what > happens to the promo after it's classified as free goods. So the guy who > bought it didn't hurt DTs profit at all. . they were doomed from the > start. Let's try this again: because he bought a promo INSTEAD of the official release (meaning not in addition to), DT has lost that royalty that they would have otherwise earned. As I understand free goods to work, they're not really free at > all. The record company designates a certain percentage of CDs they > produce to be free goods and then hands 'em out as frebies to radio > stations, stores, etc. Benevolence? Hardly. Wouldn't that put the "free" in "free goods?" The way they make up for > lost profit is by raising the price of the CD. The inflated manufacturing and packaging deductions in most record contracts more than makes up for any supposed "lost profit." In closing, let me just say that, okay, I might have been a bit harsh to the guy who bought the promo. The reason being that I wanted to make it clear to anybody tempted to follow suit that they really should buy the official FII. If you want to buy the promo in addition for collection's sake, that's cool. Shit, I can understand why someone would want everything by DT that they can get their hands on. That's why we're on the list: we love the band. So everyone, show your love to the band and buy the real thing. I did manage to make the money to make the final payment in time for the shirts. From this point on, the shirts will be going towards paying back my loan for the downpayment. Thanks again to everyone who has ordered, and all of you who plan to. I would just like to take this chance to thank everyone who has been so supportive of the shirts... It's nice to know that my work on this project is appriciated. And special thanks to Chris Hailey for the amazing artwork. ======== Web Page ======== There is a web page online, complete with ordering instructions, facts and figures, comments on the shirts, actual scans directly off the shirts, a list of paid orders, and a mini FAQ. Check it out at: http://www.prognosis.com/gabbo/ in the Dream Theater section. I owe a million to Chris Ptacek for the web space, it means a lot. ======= Details ======= The Ytsejam shirts are two sided prints. The front of the shirt features a *full color* raytraced graphic from Chris Hailey in Washington. The graphic is a beautifully done scene with the Majesty logo floating behind a group of marble columns on a tile floor with a wide view of space visible behind. The back of the shirt is in a solid light blue color. The majority of the design is a huge Majesty logo, framed by the Dream Theater title at the top, the mailing list address on the sides and "Ytsejam" at the bottom. Below that is "Internet Mailing List" between two more Majesty logos. The current lot of shirts is 217 (they printed up more than I asked for, but I'm not complaining). If those run out, and demand is high enough, I may run another with a slightly different design. You can check out all of the details, as well as a preview of the shirts at: http://www.prognosis.com/gabbo/ in the Dream Theater section. ======= Pricing ======= The cost of the shirts is $16 each. The shirt is damn close to concert quality, so $16 is a steal (last Dream Theater concert I was at charged $23 for a shirt!). If you are picking the shirt up from me directly the $16 price stands. If you can't get the shirt in person, you can order one through the mail for $20 to cover shipping. I spoke with the people at the post office and I've decided to set the shipping prices outside the USA at $9, for a total of $25. I realize this is damn expensive for a tshirt, and I'm sorry. If individual prices are signifigantly less expensive, I will gladly return a check for the balance.
