How long does it take for them to cash the check, and how long does it take to get any response from the fan club? Please respond to the list, it seems that other people might have similar questions. 'acourse you're right and the only thing that really amazes me is that cans of worms have remained the same since I first picked up a bass some 20 years ago, like how can so many people overlook that there's a slight ;-) difference between a 34" and 42" scale... and even w/double bass it's not a secret any longer that many use a 1-finger-per-imaginary-fret-fingering at least in higher positions, since otherwise playing heptatonic scales is just too awkward. Yet I still hear the tenosynovitis argument, while actually I've made the opposite experience that it's easier on my hands and arms using as much fingers as possible (resp. makes sense) w/both, probably b/c the strain is more even then (-?). For avoiding to get locked in position playing (esp. on a six string seemingly a problem to many) I recommend using one's brain instead of the fingers :-) Heike ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Nov 1997 16:38:14 -0500 (EST) From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: A Question and Other Stuff Message-ID: Hi everybody, does anybody know if the two bonus tracks from the Japanese version of FII are also going to be on a single (like Eve)? I had hoped that they'd put them on the Hollow Years single, but now that this doesn't seem to happen (according to one jammer's post), I'm getting a bit worried. I'd be willing to buy the Japanese FII (if I can still get it), but only if it's really the only way to get my hands on these two songs... Maybe some other jammer is also interested to know this and has the opportunity to ask one of the band members at one of the forthcoming shows (hint, hint)... :-) Other Stuff: The Quiet Room haven't been mentioned enough on the Jam. Their debut 'Introspect' is an absolutely fantastic progmetal album. Do yourselves a favour and check it out! Just in case anybody's missed it: Spock's Beard will be doing a small European tour in January. I think the dates can also be found on the 'Under a Cyber Moon'-site. I can't wait... I bought the Winter Rose album today. Not exactly my favourite style of music, but it's really fun to listen to... Hoping that Dream Theater won't play Lines in the Sand as opener at the show in Bonn because that song is just too great to play that early in the set, Andreas Berger ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Nov 1997 14:42:03 -0700 From: "Vincent G. This will be very, very quick: I *JUST* checked Mandylion by The Gathering and I must say that that girl has one of the most beautiful voices that I have ever heard (don't you think her voice is like Natalie Merchant's from 10000 Maniacs?). The album is incredible and I have two questions for you: * are their other albums similar to this one? I'll buy all them! * why are they considered *death* metal? I don't understand, since it has no elements that I would associate with death metal (speedy guitar, grows, fast double-bass, fast songs). Just very curious. Any DT fan should check this album (I would say buy it, but since people here have twisted tastes... Oh! Myself included! :-) ). Thank you for any help, Roger... P.S.: I'm also hearing Carcass' Heartwork as I type this. I must say that I expected faster things from them. I also expected the vocals to be much more unintelligible. I can understand almost all words (ok, I'm exagerating, but...) without looking at the booklet... I expected some Amorphis type of vocals (you know, those deep vocals with lots of low frequencies). -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Rogerio Brito - email_address_removed.br - http://www.ime.usp.br/~rbrito Undergraduate Computer Science Student - "Windows? Therefore, NM is a 7 string on the album and as I saw it live, a 7 string in front o' me big fat head. Since he played LitS on a 6 string recently, that leads me to believe that he doesn't use a 7 on the album. Well, it's been a full fourteen hours since the end of Dream Theater's performance in Colorado Springs Wednesday night, and nobody has said anything about it here! Therefore, I'll take it on myself to let everyone how hour Our Favorite Band's latest performance went. BIG WRECK: Not bad. Better than standard Alternative fare, although I think the bassist is missing a few bones in his neck. The singer/lead guitarist is quite adept, although he had trouble breathing at 6,000 feet. :) They were accepted well by the audience, especially this one guy who even cheered while the singer was tuning his guitar. "I'm just tuning my guitar, man, but I appreciate the enthusiasm." They looked like they had a good time. DEREK SHERINIAN It's like watching David Copperfield play keyboards. :) This guy's got some serious talent. JOHN MYUNG If you've never see John play live, you're missing out. It's simply amazing what he does, particularly with that Chapman Stick and during the Metropolis solo. MIKE PORTNOY What a showman. He really gets into it, throwing his sticks up in the air, punching himself in the head, stuff like that. He's actually a pretty good singer, too. JOHN PETRUCCI He didn't really stand out as much as the others, but it was still great to see him live. JAMES LaBRIE He was pretty much on target throughout the show, although his voice broke a bit during the high parts of Voices and Crimson Sunset. MERCHANDISE I bought the tour shirt and hat. Not really all that cool- looking, but I'll buy pretty much anything that says "Dream Theater" on them. SUMMARY Fantastic show. The venue, Colorado Music Center, is pretty weird. James described it as a "Giant mother f*cking fish bowl," a pretty accurate description. :) They said they're coming back to Colorado again in '98. Can't wait! David "Shinto" Schroeder, R&D Dept. I would imagine that this post will be huge, so please scroll past it if you don't wanna read it. Here we go... "Technical Ecstasy" by Jeff Wagner However you want to classify the music of Dream Theater (and related bands like Fates Warning, Queensryche, and Psychotic Waltz), they reside in a secluded abode significant and separate from the rest of the metal family. Like the eccentric uncle, perhaps, proudly independent of the rest: curious, respected, often shut out by those outside the immediate family. Its genealogy can be traced to Nektar and Gentle Giant, and if you'd listen to any of these bands next to, say, King Crimson, you'll easily be able to cite certain parallels of innovation, adventure, and bravery. Thankfully, none of them sound like any of the other. Dream Theater exemplifies musical brilliance without constantly wanking away at 1,000 MPH to prove it. Remember how Yngwie's musical masturbation burned everyone out years ago? Dream Theater has no permanent home. It is simply Dream Theater. Take it or leave it. The new album, Falling Into Infinity, makes no effort to meet modern mainstream qualifications (as Queensryche's new pile of crap has), despite a few songs that recall a more streamlined DT than ever before. Who cares that this record was produced by Kevin Shirley (who's worked with a couple of bands I'd rather not mention here)? Who cares that some record label info sheet tells us "Burning My Soul" will "impact" at metal and rock radio on this and that date? I don't. I care about killer massive metallic fusion. I care about wild instrumentation within the context of memorably impacting songs. And Dream Theater has yet to fail in providing all of the above. Ten years after forming in Boston at Berkeley Music School, drummer Mike Portnoy and bassist John Myung sit across from me, beaming like proud papas about the completion and imminent release of "Falling Into Infinity". I present them with copies of the latest Metal Maniacs. Drummer Mike Portnoy asks, "didn't Barney [Greenway] used to write for this magazine?" Indeed he did, I affirm. That reminds me - the liner notes for DT's '95 "A Change Of Seasons" give thanks to Greenway for helping them out onstage, but nowhere on that mostly-covers CD do we hear the inimitable throatblower's hellish roar. So, guys, what went on that night, and what song could you have possibly collaborated with Napalm Death's Mr. Greenway on? "We did a Metallica tune with him," Mike explains. "At that show, we did a whole other hour's worth of cover songs that weren't on the EP, and we did a bunch of songs where people joined us onstage, so Barney came out and did "Damage, Inc." with us. Actually, we released that to our fan club for a Christmas single. We wanted to leave the EP with just us [on it]. It was cool, man." .......... That's a good spot to end Part 1. Part 2 to follow........ - Matt T. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Nov 1997 18:19:45 -0500 (EST) From: Richard Banister To: YtseJelly Subject: Jam, drool, Royalties, feeling testy Message-ID: > hmm, i dunno, what about the middle sections to NM,PS, LITS, and JLMB; the > unison licks on HK...the band jams are still there. By this, I mean that there seems to be a single theme in the song that they modify slightly among verse/chorus/etc. (ala 'Lie'). Not enough interesting stuff happens in that song... Yes, that came off sounding terrible, but I just don't think the song goes anywhere. . . Anybody wanna flame me? > noticed on FII though... I remember when I first got LiT, I was rather > impressed at how the band was live. The actually jammed and did improv, and I was blown away by LiT. . . I showed part of that video to my dad, and was like "don't you understand?!?!?!" with drool and slobber flying, and he was like "yeah, whatever, boy." I almost converted him to DT, however. Although that's another story. . . Question: Does anyone know how much of the TLF JP solo was improv, and how much was pre-meditated? I absolutely love it. .. > they where playing all this bluesy/jazzy stuff. After hearing I&W and Awake > I wasnt expecting that at all. Once you see DT live, you realize there's > so much more to DT than what you hear on the albums. Yeah, but my comparison here is of the albums. FII compared to, say, IAW, has less jams, more songwriting, less completely insane instrumental sections. No instrumental section on FII just blew me away. The solos in TOT are incredible, but there was nothing even close to LTL for sheer instrumental glory. Not saying it's a bad thing, just saying I miss it. > experiments too much. My question to him is, 'Why dont you play the note > that fits with the key?' " - Yngwie on Vai my question to Ynwie: "Don't you understand?!?!?!?!" I must say that I like their current incarnation, though, and will most likely continue to love them no matter what happens. . . > There is some validity to the point that DT will suffer to some > fractional degree because someone buys the promo disk rather than the > real thing. However, I have always been personally disgusted with the Here's the deal (as far as I know) about the way it works. The promo CD falls under the 'free goods' aspect of DTs record contract. No matter what, DT suffers here. In fact, I believe they are the only ones who don't make a profit off the promo. However, it doesn't matter what happens to the promo after it's classified as free goods. So the guy who bought it didn't hurt DTs profit at all. . they were doomed from the start. As I understand free goods to work, they're not really free at all. The record company designates a certain percentage of CDs they produce to be free goods and then hands 'em out as frebies to radio stations, stores, etc. Benevolence? Hardly. The way they make up for lost profit is by raising the price of the CD. So a CD that would cost you say $14 now costs you $16. So record companies don't lose any profit.. . how nice for them. But what about DT? Well, since those promo CDs were free when the record company sold them, DT is not able to earn any royalties on those CDs. Instant lost profits. Makes you wanna sign a record deal, eh? and, of course: > There was a method practisced in Italian barbershops where they were bathed > in hot water (which as know damages testicular tissue) and then they rubbed > their testicles until they kinda dissolved...
