A Jam's worth of slamming ONE PERSON for buying a promo isn't really worth it. It's called a 'mistake' for a reason. Personally, while I wouldn't buy the promo because I'd rather see the band get the money, if I were strapped for cash and two people offered me the same CD, one $5 cheaper, I'm a FOOL if I don't take the cheaper one. Bass Playing: I'd be lost if I didn't use all four fingers on my left hand. Honestly, I can't see how people can play by only using two fingers (unless you're in U2, or Fluffy, the WORST band I have ever seen). What about right hand technique? I'm still a two-finger player there.... Here's a fun game to play: lay a mattress on the floor, put Lorenna McKennitt's "The Book of Secrets" in the CD player, and wait 53min 19sec. Then collapse in sheer ecstacy at this woman's talent. Albums like this make me believe in magic. -Nicholas ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Nov 1997 10:45:46 -0500 (EST) From: Pat Daugherty To: Dream Theater Mailing List Subject: DC show Nov 23 Message-ID: I just called up ticketbastard and ordered my tickets. 2 tickets for $46.50 for the Capital Ballroom Sunday Nov 23. I have three copies of 'Falling Into Infinity, one is a promo copy that my CD dealer gave me, one that I bought, and one that my friend cut for me (without 'Hollow Years' and 'Anna Lee'). Will I be able sleep tonight with a clear conscience - too right I will. Next thing I know, some do-gooder will be telling me I should give the band DM 90 for two tickets for the Offenbach show on the 2nd of December because I'm on the guest list, and hence depriving the band of much-needed income - bollocks. For those of you who, like me, prefer grunting death vocals to most prog vocalists, try some of the following bands, which all combine crystal clear female vocals with death screams and grunts: Theatre Of Tragedy Orphanage Elend On the vocals thing, what's the big deal about Royal Hunt? Lots of talk about them here sometimes, and I went to see them live recently. The music is OK, but that singer should be taken outside and shot in the interests of humanity. I had to leave early. I also remember when I reviewed The Divine Wings Of Tragedy by Symphony X here on the list - I said I didn't like a lot of the vocals, and received an e-mail from the singer (Romeo?) wanting to know exactly what I didn't like. The other day I was playing 'Falling Into Infinity' and I put the cover out on the porch (about 15 yards from where I was standing) and then I looked at it through the wrong end of a pair of binoculars - it was amazing, I couldn't see a fucking thing! Derek plays keys in a song with Brad Gillis (Ozzy, Night Ranger), a song that he co wrote. And Kevin plays with Fates Warning, on At fates fingers. How deluded are these parents who would blame the music industry for their child's failings and actions? This stuff just pisses me off. You never hear of anyone blaming a horror movie or serial kiler novel for setting fragile junior on the road to suicide. Granted, MM sucks, but that is not even close to the point. That the government would even hold a hearing on something so ludicrous steams me. No piece of MUSIC is going to convince someone to kill himself. MY GOD, ISN'T THAT AN OBVIOUS TRUTH???? It's like Ozzy said, if he were going to have music make someone do ANYTHING, it would be to have them buy more copies of the record. Man, these people are idiotic. People are so unwilling to look in the mirror and accept blame these days. Sure, maybe I kicked junior's ass, and fucked him up the rump nightly, but it's THE MUSIC that drove him to suicide. Geez. If all *my* friends listened to nothing but Marilyn Manson, I'd probably end it all, too. :) Unfortunately, Kevin has an extremely valid point that some people are simply never going to understand. Bad parents always need a scapegoat. It was the music, or it was the TV, or whatever. It was never the fact that the parents alienated the kid and made him feel unloved. Whatever. I'm all for the guys getting the money the deserve for the work they do, but I'm also all for being able to hear that work and having an extra five bucks in my pocket (five bucks which will go towards my dinner tonight during my eight hour night shift at one of my two jobs). And being that I'm a college student with debts up the ass, I almost always buy CDs used, so I never contribute to a band's profit except at concerts. Does this trouble me? No. Should it?
