But the aim is really to influence the station into playing the music. Nothing wrong with that. But what is wrong is when the radio stations go to used CD stores and sell them, and then the store sells the disc for 10 dollars. It's a great deal for you, but it does not show up as a sale of the album. I have no real problem with people buying these promo cd's, I do have a problem with the people selling them. I was at my local used CD shop this weekend and I found a copy of a disc that contains: Burning My Soul (radio edit) Burning My Soul (LP version) Audio Bio No booklet in the jewel box but the CD label is pretty cool (very brown with 2 hands holding the binoculars) Only 5 Bucks. All true. Plus, the band will receieve no royalties on this purchase, which might come in handy, seeing as how they have KIDS and all. The CD you have is part of the "free goods" associated with FII. In a nutshell, out of all the FII CDs made, roughly 15% of them are made to promote the album (retail in-store play, press, etc) in the hopes that this added exposure will generate sales. Bands don't get any royalties on free goods and free goods definitely don't show up in Billboard or anything like that. But hey, you saved a couple of bucks. That's all that matters. (heavy sarcasm) Richie > P.S. If anyone else out there is contemplating such a purchase, I strongly suggest that you make sure you already have bought a "proper" copy of FII before doing so. If enough people buy the promos w/o buying the legit album first, the day will come when there won't be anymore legit DT albums to buy. End of sermon. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Nov 97 09:54:13 +0100 From: Jan Ziese To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: "For Promotional Use Only" Message-ID: At 21:51 05.11.97 -0800, Rick wrote: > >Brian Hayden wrote: >>Stamped in gold letters on the front of the booklet:"FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY. >>SALE OR OTHER TRANSFER IS PROHIBITED. Not only did you provide the merchant with a 100% profit margin, you Actually, profit margins get calculated as follows: margin = ((sales price / purchase price) - 1) * 100 % With the purchase price being NIL, the profit margin in the above case cannot really be calculated ('Division by zero error'), but can be approximated as being infinite. So, the album's title actually makes mucho sense! >contributed zero to the FII sales tally, and are not supporting the band >in any way. Maybe you should've bought the $15 copy. Yeah right. He should have returned the promo copy immediately. Or better yet, he should have sent it to me and buy the one for $15. Nonsense. Why is everyone talking about using three left hand fingers. That's crazy. You've got a fourth finger and a thumb. USE THEM!!!! The pinkey is the second most important fingert for bass playing (the middle finger is the second). It's what makes bass lines more interesting than just 1-3, 1-3, 1-3 pentatonic runs and makes lines smooth. I have a six string and regularly use all four fingers (can't use my thumb yet because I'm not that good ;-) to do chords on the bass and it works great. Doesn't hurt at all. I know that those stupid Mel Bay Bites On Bass books say to use three fingers and play the electric like it's a freakin' upright, but the guy's an idiot. That style of bass playing is 50 years old at least. It's ok for medium-tempo big band walking bass lines, but my fingers would fall off if I tried to play Metropolis with out my pinkey (they fall off anyway). Anyway, using all four fingers, one finger per fret and 2-3 for the pinkey seems to be the best way to go without incuring injury or carpal tunnel problems (as long as your fingers aren't stiff). Matt Tedesco, just traded me some Echolyn tapes (he's a very trustworthy trader, I wouldn't think twice about trading with him again) for some other stuff.
