I don't know why it's listed as instrumental... I would just call it "Solo; Solo." I mean, they're good solos, but do they divide scarred up into little sections like that? LTL? Am I being nitpicky? Maybe I just miss the instrumentals of IAW and WDADU... That's my biggest disappointment with FII. There's nothing where the _band_ just jams. . . there's plenty of interesting solo work, but jams/rythm sections just don't fill my needs. Look at hells kitchen. It's powerfull and moving, but as far as instrumentals go, it's just a song without words. Not to make undue comparisons and risk major flamage, but look at metallicas 'black' album. What happened to the jams? Did they 'mature?' hmmm. . . I'm not saying this is a bad thing. Certainly, DTs songwriting has come in by the truckload on FII... But I do miss the jams. Since everyone has told about the show I just want to make a few shout outs to the great ytsejammers I met. Thanks Deb for the rides, saved my ass some big trouble. Chris and Maddy for your hospitality Saturday night. And for everyone else I met, ran in to or whatever else happened: Pat, John, Sean, Scott, Allison, Andrew, the guys from Atlanta, a guy from California and a whole shit load that I can't remember, but hey, it was great meeting you all and if anyone wants to come out here to see them or anything else (Metallica is playing free next Tuesday - I would go, but work calls). Thanks again Dream Theater for the great show in Chicago and that band called Nightmare Cinema weren't bad either. I went into a local used CD place looking for I&W (which I also don't have on CD). They didn't have it (or any other DT which is odd, they usually have a few copies of Awake and ACOS), so I went to fill out a reservation form. I figured as long as I was at it, I might as well reserve all the DT CDs that I don't have. So I write 'em down, the guy looks at it and says "This new one, do you want a new copy of that, cause I have a new one behind the counter for $15?" I think about it for a second and then remember that it's only $12 at Circuit City, so I'm about to say no, when the other guy at the counter pulls out a copy of it, still in plastic, and says, "This one's only $10." So I buy it, and as I'm paying I look at the thing, and surprise surprise, what do I see? Stamped in gold letters on the front of the booklet: "FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY. SALE OR OTHER TRANSFER IS PROHIBITED. MUST BE RETURNED ON DEMAND OF THE RECORD COMPANY." And the same thing on the CD itself. He is and has always lived in Toronto, Canada. His parents imigrated there from a location I am not sure of at the current moment. He got his name "Geddy" from his mother. That is, when she would say his name Gary, it would come out like Geddy because she had a thick Yitish accent. So, putting together his reverbed first name with his middle name, he came up with Geddy Lee. I hope that sheds some light for you Shai. I disagree here. Those are short notes, for most of them, and LaBrie has never been known for doing vibrato over the course of sentences... just on sustained notes for the most part. I personally think it's either accidental but sounds awesome, or it was on purpose but to create tension. My underground, unofficial theory is that he was trying to sing like Edie Brickel , who had similar pitch imperfections on a song with similar lyrics and similar melodies. :) > I think it's a six on record, but check this out: You know, the main part that I hear it in is the very beginning, when he's playing Chords, and Derek is sort of "free form soloing". But I haven't gone back to examine it recently... I'll go back and see if it's the bass or the guitar that I'm hearing. I am sure he was using the 7 string at Chicago, but I'm not sure if he used that low B string at all. But those are some interesting observations you bring up, and I hadn't realized he switched things around so much. I was going to try to meet with some of the other Jammers, but since I didn't know where the Perkins was that we were supposedly to meet at, and I wanted to get back to my friend's brother's place in Hastings (where we crashed for the night), I couldn't make it. If you saw a guy wearing a home Colorado Avalanche jersey, then you saw me. I was standing in between the pillar and the stairs on John Petrucci's side of the stage. I had a good view of the stage, and being 6-2, I had a height advantage over those standing around me. The place was packed, which is a great sign. I talked to one guy who saw them in '92 at the Mirage (I think) when there were only 30 people there. A lot more saw them on Sunday. I was also was near the scuffle that took place at the base of the steps. I don't know what triggered it. I think the guy who got dragged out by security wouldn't get off the bottom step (he was wearing a DT t-shirt). The little security guy put the other guy in a headlock, and hauled him off. This was the first time I had seen Dream Theater live, and I thought they were simply incredible! I had to chuckle as James left the stage every time the band got into a long musical riff. It almost seemed like his job as lead vocalist was a part time job! I'm just kidding, of course. James' vocals were right on target all night long. He just blew everybody away on "Take Away My Pain." Though he does need to smile more on stage (IMHO). I loved the show for many reasons. One of them is that DT needed no props, fancy lights, or gimmicks of any sort. They just came out and rocked for two hours, with no solos from any band members. They don't need to, they have so much good music written! I hope these guys play Omaha, which is a lot closer to me than Minneapolis. But hey, I have no problems driving five hours to see DT. I suppose it would be a bit much to ask them to play the Pomp Room in Sioux Falls (a great intimate setting where I saw Matthew Sweet recently). Anyway, Keep on 'Jammin!! This has most likely been posted, but I haven't gotten thru all my Jams from this weekend but here goes anyway... Minneapolis was a GREAT show! First Avenuewas a PERFECT venue for the guys to play. The show didn't sell out, but the place was pretty full. As most previous reports indicated, Big Wreck wasn't so bad. I kinda liked it. I was standing up on the balcony to the right for those who know the place. While BW was still playing, the guys walked right by us going down the stairs. MP had his wife with, which was cool. The pre-show was the usual unreleased demos, AIC and the Clockwork Orange theme. They opened with a little different a tune this show... 1. Crimson Sunrise/Innocence/Just Let Me Breathe 2. Burning My Soul 3. Under a Glass Moon 4. Voices 5. Take Away My Pain 6. Lines in the Sand 7. Scarred/The Darkest of Winters/YtseJam 8. Peruvian Skies 9. Pull Me Under 10. New Millenium/Crimson Sunset(w/ Fortune in Lies riff at the end) Encore: Metropolis w/ extended jam in the middle I'm not sure if this was the first show they played Peruvian Skies at or not... I know most earlier shows they played Puppies on Acid, which was left out of our show. The show was phenominal, no little moshing bastards. The crowd overall seemed to be genuine fans, it seemed everybody sang along with "Pull Me Under!" I think everybody was in top form, Derek and Myung especially impressed me. James did some characteristic little turns and odd dances, but not as bad as on the "Live in Tokyo" video. After the show was great, Derek came out onto the floor and signed some stuff and talked to people. We then proceeded out to stalk the tour bus and were rewarded for our efforts and freezing, as all five members made appearances outside. All the guys were great, signing stuff and talking to people. I talked to Myung the most. He said even an approximate date for Metropolis Pt. 2 was impossible to say at this point. He also seemed to indicate a CD single for "Burning My Soul" I'll hafta check that out. He also further explained the Chapman Stick. Petrucci expressed his distatse for "When Dream and Day Unite" when I made a comment to him I hadn't seen many copies of that being signed and he replied, "Good." James was recovering from a cold but stood out in the cold(lower to mid 30s) to talk to people and the works. He seemed really cool despite previous reports. Portnoy was great, talking with people about Marillion and Mike Bahr's boots and stuff, he was great. Derek was really cool too, I flagged him down after talking to him the first time, he stopped and talked a bit. I heard him talking about Kevin Moore with somebody too, which I thought was cool. I hateto say it, but he does kinda look like a pimp. :) Great guy though. Anywho, anybody weho was there write me, I'm interested in pictures and/or recordings of the show. I may be able to get it pressed to CD soon if anybody has a recording of the show! E-Mail me!
