There's no real reason not to (unless it hurts), because it extends your range so dramatically. Even the simplest scales, played way down towards the head, require a pretty big reach. If you're not using your pinky, you're probably moving too much. As for thef right hand, I usually use two fingers, but I use three when playing any kind of quick triplet passage. I borrowed this idea from Steve Harris. Actually, I don't even know if he uses three fingers or not, but when I was trying to learn stuff like "Losfer Words" off of Powerslave, it just made sense to me to use three. ("I got all these extra fingers sitting around doing nothing, might as well put them to work.") One of my more recent goals has been incorporating more than just my R index finger in two-handed tapping. Again, when you can use even two fingers, it allows you to do so much more stuff (especially on my five string, when three L fingers is all I can really bear to use at once :-). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Digital Man \|/ ____ \|/ "640 K ought to be enough email_address_removed "@'/ ,. \`@" memory for everyone." -Gates email_address_removed /_| \__/ |_\ "He won't need a bed http://www.cs.wm.edu/~cmerlo \__U_/ He's a digital man" -Peart ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Maintainer of the Official Dream Theater Frequently Asked Questions List http://www.cs.wm.edu/~cmerlo/dtfaq.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Nov 1997 16:26:27 -0500 (EST) From: Dori Tritt To: email_address_removed Subject: IRC tonight Message-ID: Does anybody know if Chris from Divine Regal will be on IRC tonight? On the Awake tour, he had eyes airbrushed (?) on the bass drums. The design was almost mesmerizing! I was somewhat disappointed to not see any design on them at Toad's Place. I guess a pair of binoculars isn't a very mesmerizing design, though :) Ok, anyway, last night after leaving Willy's Steak House in Shrewsbury, MA (INCREDIBLE, but expensive place for a slab of well-aged beef!), my girlfriend hears BMS on my car's CD player. I have thoroughly converted her into a Dream Theater fan, I am happy to say. Anyway, she starts singing along with the tune, and when James sings "Living and learning", she substitutes "knitting and perling"! She is into the sewing thing, and apparently perling is a knitting term. :) I burst out laughing considering the recent jams' conversation about misheard lyrics :) So, apparently you hear what you are familiar with in lyrics...so, I wonder what it means when you hear "Can't let them feel me with rubber hands" in Scarred :-) Josh ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Nov 1997 17:34:32 -0500 From: Cloud Strife To: Ytsejam Mailing List Subject: lits/7 string Message-ID: -- I dont know how one can distinguish between a 7 and a 6 from afar, but maybe if youre thinking about it being the 7 string, by having the white/black picasso graphic (like the one on the awake tour) you may be fooled by the last of the JPM's that has been in production, because its a 6 string, with the b/w picasso on it,...(ive seen it in several pictures already) , Maybe hes playing that one...and you associated it with the 7 string he used on the awake tour...w/ the b/w picasso on it In the stream of consciousness There is a river crying Living comes much easier Once we admit , We're dying. It is a EXTREMELY moderated list. You really can't get too far off the subject of Rush without having RUSHMGR tell you to end the thread. It is how this list got started. People started talking about DT too much and RUSHMGR told everyone to change the subject. I haven't been on that list in a while, because the conversation gets awfully stale when all you talk about is Rush. I'd rather hear about new bands during the down times rather than stupid arguments about stuff like Ayn Rand's influence or what the "correct" lyrics are for "Freewill". Message-ID: First off, since this came up, and I am well aware of how tough it is to get a Lie single, I will again publicly thank Mike Bahr for getting me a copy some months ago. He even gave me a great deal on it. Now, as far as Holy Land ripping DT off goes, of course I don't hear it at all, but if someone feels that way, why try to change his mind? I agree that it's extreme to hear the first couple minutes of one song, and then just declare the band a waste, but still, everyone's gonna have his opinion. That whole post about NMS, it made sense, but still, you have to take into account that Mike has listened to Holy Land all the way through and come to his decision. Merlo admitted that he's gonna give the band a fair shake. That attitude can probably get them kicked off NMS! I hear a lot of similarities in music... the melody behind "Raining, raining, raining deep in heaven" etc sounds a *lot* like one of my *least* favorite songs (Jewel's "Who Will Save Your Soul"). The style is completely different, but the notes at some points are eerily similar. My other friends have noticed similarities to Bohemian Rhapsody in JLMB, and King Crimson sounds in NM. What I pity is people who can't see past similarities and just let themselves enjoy the music. There are borrowed ideas in *every* form of music, in recorded time. If an artist has a chance to hear another artist's work, it will influence him one way or the other. Since I hate Kirk Hammett enough for my hatred alone to embed him in concrete and throw him into Lake Michegan, I am influenced NOT to play like him. Since I like Friedman a whole lot, some of my solos tend to have big Friedman influences. Anyway, just a few thoughs. ACK! I would love this! Can I get it anywhere? > BTW2, do any of you music trained 'jammers know the origin of > operatic vocals??? I mean, why were they "invented" and in which > occasion?? Well after gregorian chant, solo vocal music was accompanied and was usually in the form of troubadour songs and trouvere songs. When opera began, the manner of singing was much the same as these, but the performers were then solely SINGERS and as such florrid ornamentation was encouraged. As opera grew, the ornamentation remained a staple, but the operas themselves moved from the courts of the king to opera houses. These larger venues, combined with the fact that the orchestras grew and orchestration got thicker, demanded that the manner of singing be changed in order to cut through the orchestra and reach the back of the hall. This is where bel canto begins. In the beginning all the parts were for soprani or castrati, since the lower male voices couldn't be heard over the orchestra. As technique improved, so did the number of lower voiced male opera roles. The bel canto technique remains a way of cutting through the orchestra and, not-so-coincidentally, is also perhaps the only way of singing at the extremes of one's range without damaging the voice. Vocal health is a by-product of good technique. Hmm..."Minstrels and Shit"...hey, Jason--we should call our band that! Comments? I'd appreciate it. I'm doing a paper on this. :) > I think I have to agree here... there are a few prog bands that I > can't stand to listen to because of the vocals... even though the > music sounds amazing... the vocals just kill it... Yeah. I know there are a million bands out there, but they all pale in comparison with DT and Fates because of the vocals. The guy from Lemur Voice does a good job, as does the guy from Ivanhoe, but other than that...forget it. > Question (that's not in the FAQ): > > Why does JL sing out of tune (sharp) in the interlude in Hollow Years? > > "Carry me to the shore*line* > Bury me *in* the *sand* > *Walk me across* the water > And maybe you'll understand" > > The words with the *...* around them indicate the really bad parts. Is this > due to some influence to another band that I am missing? What say you, oh > jammers of the 'Ytse? Well, in my humble-albeit-qualified opinion, it's not done intentionally--it's because he sings so much of the song without vibrato. Vibrato is, of course, a quick portamento between a few notes. When vibrato is used the notes will sound more in-tune even if the core of the note is not exactly on pitch because the correct pitch will be touched on several times through the cycle of the vibrato. Basically, vibrato helps to average out pitch imperfections . James is stifling the vibrato and it is affecting his pitch. Vibrato is another by-product of good technique. Incedentally, from the Baroque era until almost the 20th century, vibrato was considered an ornament. It wasn't always a part of opera singing until the opera houses got so ridiculously HUGE that it was necessary to have vibrato to be heard . :) > Hey, I need a big favor from someone at the next couple DT shows. > At clinics, supposedly Petrucci plays LITS on a 6 string (and I know > that can be done, because I play it on both 6 and 7). I think it's a six on record, but check this out: ACoS: written on 6, rewritten on 7, played parts w/ 6 and parts w/ 7 on Ff96. The Mirror: written on 6 as "Puppies on Acid", evolved into The Mirror on 7, played as Pup on HftH w/6 Pull Me Under: Written on 6; played at Ff96 w/7. I think my point is that JP could play on an out of tune mandolin with a string missing and it would still sound pretty good. Woah! Long post! that's enough from me.
