Check them out. Jason, will you back me up on this one? > > Oh, so you like hearing other bands trying to be Dream Theater? :) Mike, This is COMPLETE bullshit. Angra is completely unique and I believe they're one of the few bands out there that totally equals DT's talent with song-writing and has the chops and virtuosity all around on their instruments. They're technical in their own sense with their mix of speed metal, progressive, classical, and brazillian rhythms opposed to something like the video-game metal virtuosity (that's how I think of it) when you hear on something like Metropolis. The catchyness, hooks, and overall passion of the music makes the music very listenable and hard to get tired of. The only bad thing I can say about this band is that sometimes the high and passionate vocals combined with all the instrumentation can sometimes seem a little over the top and bombastic. However,I recommend everybody on this list to get Holy Land and hear the best release in this genre since Images and Words...Awake and FII included. (IMHO of course). Black Sabbath wrote the first death metal songs, although they wouldn't have known it at the time. "Cornucopia" not only is the heaviest riff ever, but also incorporates non-standard (i.e. very low) tuning, something that was untested at the time. I would say that Metallica has influenced at least 95% of death metal bands, but I wouldn't say that Metallica material is even close to death metal. "16th notes really fast on the E string" isn't death metal, it's speed metal. As far as I'm concerned, death metal is tied whole notes on the E string, at 40 beats per minute. I did want to say that I felt the venue in Columbus was very nice. I would not hesitate to go there again. We had gone to John's guitar clinic in Akron a few years ago and also to Mike's drum clinic in Columbus. There is no doubt that these guys are master musicians. Joe Kleon in his review of the concert in Scene Magazine said,"Individually, each member is a complete virtuoso. Collectively, they perform musical magic."In addition, to their musical talents, we were really impressed when we met them the first time at how very nice they are. At both clinics, they took the time to answer questions, meet the fans, and sign autographs. Mike told my daughter that he would send her an autographed picture and he did!! Also, when he saw us again last week, he remembered us from the clinic and even remembered that he had sent her the picture a year or so ago. Now, we were really impresssed when you consider all of the people that he meets day in and day out. Marcy Interesting quotes from the same Scene article: "Guitarist John Petrucci is certainly one of the best rock guitarists alive today. His supreme ability puts "guitar gods" like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani to shame." "Drummer Mike Portnoy changes times and adds extremely difficult fills like he invented the drums." "Derek Sherinian mesmerizes the audience with his superior ivory abilities." "Collectively, there are only a few musical oufits on this earth to match their musical ability." Thanks man. I couldn't believe it didn't break or that I didn't accidentally hit someone with it once I got it! I was nothing but FLYING ELBOWS when I got my greedy hands on it. Also, from all the posts I've seen from people who were at the Chicago show, I'd have to say that it must have been just about one of the best shows they've ever done--at least in the U.S. As I said before, that was the most I've ever seen a crowd get into any show (including Metallica shows), and the most fun I believe I've ever seen a band have onstage. I'm so glad I was able to attend such a historic musicfest! Since Sat. night, I've been on a huge DT kick listening to all the cds and bootlegs (especially the Fix 96 boot I have) and most of the prog stuff I own. Here goes with the obligatory review... Big Wreck: They didn't impress me. The singer was pretty good and his guitar playing was cool (the song that he did by himself with the slide was the highlight), but the other guitar player and the drummer really bit. I don't know anything about bass, but I do know that the bassist was acting like a freak. All in all, I wouldn't buy their album, but I'd give it a chance if someone gave it to me. The Break: We all know what songs were played during the break so onto... Dream Theater: Good Lord, how much can a person be blown away in the space of two hours? This was my first time seeing DT, and it detroyed every other concert I've seen. The setlist (slightly out of order, but pretty close - I know the first few and last few are right): The Crimson Sunrise Innocence Just Let Me Breathe Under a Glass Moon Burning My Soul Not a Load Bearing...er, I mean Peruvian Skies ;-) Take Away My Pain Voices Lines in the Sand Scarred Pull Me Under Ytse Jam Darkest of Winters New Millenium Inevitable Summer Crimson Sunset Metropolis (with a bit of "One" at the end) The were all really having fun, it was great to watch. LaBrie and Petrucci kept coming out to the edge of the stage and leaning down towards the crowd. Sherinian was grinning at us every now and then, mostly he just stood and stared into space, the majestic rock god that he is. ;-) LaBrie was really getting into his role as frontman more than I had expected from people's horror stories about him. I laughed like hell when Portnoy started the drum beat to VanHalen's "Everybody Wants Some" and LaBrie did the little Roth wail...and then, "Nah, no David Roth tonight." Also when LaBrie was talking to the crowd towards the end of the show, and Portnoy kept dropping little drum fills every now and then. James says, "It's like having Animal from the Muppets back here." That got a laugh, Portnoy did it again, and James turns around and says, "Thanks Mike, very inspiring," with a grin and a roll of the eyes. The Chapman stick, in case you haven't seen it, is a monster of an instrument. I watched Myung while he played it, and was very surprised. I thought that some of that stuff was keyboards when I heard it on the CD. Cool instrument. LaBrie: I really didn't expect him to be so dead on. He nailed pretty much everything...he seemed flattered when I mentioned this after the show. I don't understand why people think he's a jerk. He seemed really cool, on stage and off. The bullhorn was cool...I also liked how he dangled the mike over the crowd during Pull Me Under. Derek: He was hilarious. The lava lamps, the tv, the gyrations. I got a kick out of his performance. He was also wailing on that keyboard, btw, holy shit! During some of the jams, while everyone was staring at Petrucci or Portnoy, I looked over at Derek and pointed at him..."You tha man." He was also really cool after the show, he came out and talked for a minute with the people who gathered in front of the stage. Petrucci: Great stuff, he was very into his playing. I told him that I liked his more soulful work on FII a lot, and he seemed appreciative. Portnoy: He was really impressive. I don't usually notice drumming much, but there were a few spots where he was just mesmerizing...I had to just shake my head and laugh at some of the stuff he pulled off in his solo, during Ytse Jam. Seemed cool after the show, especially considering all the people who rushed him - and what was up with that guy who was asking all the stupid questions about Kevin Moore? The same guy was hounding Derek earlier...like he was trying to get the guys to slam Kevin. What a dink. Myung: I talked to The Silent Man...cool. I asked him about the Chapman stick, if it was hard to learn, stuff like that, and he talked about it a bit. He was really soft-spoken, but not in an aloof way at all. Nice guy. And to whoever was complaining about the younger people there - I didn't think it was bad at all. There was a minor push during Pull Me Under, some people hopping up and down on the right side of the crowd. No big deal. I laughed at the beginning of the show when some putz started trying to mosh and this huge black guy grabbed him, stood him up, and told him he should probably cut it out, in no uncertain terms. =) BTW, I was one of the people pumping the fist in the air every now and again, and I hit somebody once.
