"Take the Time" to listen. You may learn > something - you may not! Nicely said Paul! I fully agree that there are some death metal vocals that are completely generic (that surge of 1 album bands cropping up in the late 80's early 90's following the example of Cannibal Corpse, which was one of the very first) Myself, I prefer at least semi-discernable death metal vocals. Groups suchs as Amorphis, Edge of Sanity, Morbid Angel Paradise Lost (first few albums were geared towards death, last few have changed greatly) would be something to check out. Then on the opposite spectrum bands like DT, Queensryche, Fates Warning have awesome vocalists. It's all a matter of opinion and personal taste. Before totally slamming something it's always nice ot check things out, sometimes something that wasn't liked before just clicks. Jim PS Has anyone checked out the second Mortal Kombat soundtrack? If so I'm curious as to their opinions. It's much more geared towards techno than the previous album. -- "We are all books of blood, as soon as we're open we're red" --Clive Barker ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Nov 1997 09:23:37 -0500 From: Eric Rodger To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Pretty Maids Message-ID: >> Does anyone have any info on Pretty Maids? 'Spooked' just came out within the last year. They originated back in the 80's, and had 6 people in the band (at least for one of the old albums). They released a self titled EP, then 'Red Hot and Heavy'. Then came 'Future World' followed by 'Jump the Gun' which was release in the US under the title 'Lethal Heroes.' As far as I know, RHaH, FW, and LH were the only albums released in the US. After Jump the Gun, they released 'Sin-Decade', 'Scream', 'Screamin Live', and 'Spooked', plus possibly one other LP, an acoustic EP, and possibly a Christmas EP. Since none of these were released in the US, my discography is a little weak. I'm sure of Sin-Decade, Scream, Screamin Live and Spooked, because I have them. As far as I know, they are still together, but again, I'm in the US and they are a European band, so it's hard to keep up. Long time no post. I'll make it quick. 1. Shane's PS parody was the funniest thing I've read in a long time! Excellent. 2. Apocalyptica... Cover versions are always cover versions and it's better to take 'em as that rather than to compare them to original compositions. Apocalyptica has done a great job IMHO, and what Seroussi (sorry, forgot your real name) said about them possibly NOT spending a long long time doing the arrangements, that's just plain wrong. I don't know how well you know the cello, but it's not like you can just grab it and play it like a guitar.. The guys themselves (they're Finnish like me, so I've seen tons of interviews back when they had just released the album and had a lot of media attention) are all students at the very esteemed Sibelius Academy of Classical Music and they had to work hard on learning a new way to play their instruments. It's just completely different, playing metal on a cello. They pretty much developed the technique themselves. That's all I have for now, no real DTC there.. I'm so damn envious of you guys in the States, getting to see them live already. I have to wait until February.. 4 months, 120 days :-( The 'jam has been excellent lately, btw. I don't know if it's the fact that the guys are touring and that generally causes a lot of good concert reviews and travel stories and very little arguments, or because no bonehead newbies have surfaced in the past few weeks, but it's really a lot of fun to read nowadays.. Especially with all the misheard lyrics, parodies and stories of jammers' concert trips. np: Cake: Fashion Nugget: I Will Survive. To get the Fates song (I think Saints In Hell) is worth the price of the cd. This version kicks butt. I was wondering why DT and Fates' labels dont care about them doing tribute work on albums put out by other labels. A lot of the time the record company will say no to a group's request to do something on another label. Take for instance the KISS tribute of a few years ago. Bands like Metallica were rumored to be on it but weren't allowed because of their record companies. I'm just wonder why DT and Fates' labels let them put stuff out on other labels. |-------------------------------------------------------------------| | Pat Daugherty email_address_removed | |===================================================================| | Washington Redskins 5-4 | | Upon the murder scene of a NY Yankee fan at Camden Yards: | | "I didn't know that was illegal in Baltimore"-Munch on Homicide | |-------------------------------------------------------------------| ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Nov 1997 09:33:56 -0500 From: "Metzger, Mark" To: "'(ytsejam)'" Subject: Penishirts Must Go !! Point is? That stuff ain't singing. Thinking about my Chaos AD tape, Sepultura identifies the vocalist as "throat," and I always dug that description; pretty accurate. from Mike Blevins: >One word: ANGRA. Check them out. Jason, will you back me up on this one? >:) Actually, I've been saying for years that music like "Master Of >Puppets" has more to do with classical than any other genre heading - >even rock. For anyone that says Metallica's music (up until the Black >album) isn't complex, try playing something like "...And Justice For >All" in a band some time. The playing may not be "complex", but the >arrangement certainly is... Actually, I'll back you up on this. I've always thought those two Metallica albums were very similar in structure to classical music, particularly Justice. And Angra, of course, geez, I simply can't believe how talented these guys are as song-writers. Their wear their classical influences on their sleeve, with the opening track of Holy Land setting the tone for the album. The chorus singing throughout Carolina IV creates such a stark contrast to the more metal guitars on top. Also, how 'bout Yes' Close to the Edge? I think you can definitely hear the structural and compositional similarities to classical music here. And definitely in Anglagard--I'll bring these guys up from time to time, only 'cuz they are simply brilliant at composing progressive works. In my old band, my drummer and I would just sometimes randomly start to play "Ride the Lightning". . . the other band members just wouldn't understand, but since he and I knew the song so well, without any practice at all we went through the whole thing, and it didn't sound too bad. We would also do this with other metallica songs (and I thought we tried once with ytsejam, but completely failed!), with moderate success. The point is, I guess it depends on how well you know the song, and what type of music you're used to. Take a band of people who listen to punk exclusively. Hand them a pre-black metallica song, and they'll drool all over the instrumental section. However, for people (like myself ;) who have been raised on prog and styles of music that involve instrumental work, metallicas arrangements aren't anything out of the ordinary. I heard things like Kansas' 'closet chronicles', and Tull's 'part of the machine' before I even understood what prog was, so I thought that that was the norm. Metallicas arrangements may be more complex than say, your average pop bands, but they don't hold a candle to DT or other prog! :) figuratively, Rich ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Nov 97 11:10:46 -0600 From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Chicago show (some spoilers) Message-ID: Hey all! You were all very cool! Sorry we couldn't party afterwards (after waiting around and getting booted), but my bud and I really needed to get some beer up near Wrigley Field. Hopefully in 1998 we'll all be of age and be able to to booze/hang together. I thought Big Wreck was pretty good. Cool, bluesy sound. The lead guitar/vox guy was very good and the bass player was killer. I couldn't tell what kind of bass he was playing--and 8 string? It looked like it had 12 machine heads. As far as attitude, they were getting good repsonse from the crowd, but some people are just assholes with the "you suck!" shit. Let 'em play and be polite. I don't think Wes'(?) or Ptacek's comments were bad and I really don't think the guitarist was directing his comments at them. Anyway, I got spit on by LaBrie a couple times. I got thumbs up from Derek for being (what it seemed liked) the only person to give him any props during solos, smiles from JP and wacked out grimaces from Portnoy. Nightmare Cinema was cool and it was good to see Derek get to be on top of the crowd and not way in back. Portnoy was about to kill the sound guy 'cause of feedback coming from one of his rack toms. James apologized for time spent fixinf the sound and Mike bitched "The sound guy's only had about six hours to fix this mess." Then he promptly threw a drum stick at the on stage sound board!! :) Great show, great time overall. Hope you made it back safely, Kristin!
