Message-ID: I just watched "Transformers - The Movie" for the first time in like 10 years. It's so fuckin cool. The soundtrack is like Prog Rock with a band called Lion doing the theme song and a band called Sceptres' something(???) doing some other songs. Also Wierd Al Yankovic doing "Dare to be Stupid" Also famous voices - Orson Welles, Judd Nelson, Leonard Nimoy, Eric Idle. Is there a second movie? My childhood memory fails me there. To not like a band because of the vocals, when you > like the music, is shallow and pathetic. I must ask you to give them > another listen - it may grow on you!! Well, I dunno. Have you ever bought a cd that has a problem that you just can't get over? For me, it's really difficult to enjoy an album where the vocalist is off key (I LOVE CARCASS THOUGH!). Perhaps to some, the growling thing is a similar problem. No matter how hard I try, I still can't listen to bands like Elegy, who have AMAZING musicianship, but lyrics straight out of a Firehouse album. Just my take. > >i'm just wondering if ToT is something they can pull off live right > >now....in the same way they didn't play scarred until after the primary > >awake tour was over.....maybe ToT is one of those, "we gotta put in a lot > >of time to figure out how to pull this off, let's play it later" type of > >songs...... Hmm. I went back to listen to ToT, and I don't hear anything that would be difficult compared to some of what they were doing. The music is rather easy (as DT songs go) until the solo, and even that is something that I doubt would be hard for Petrucci (That's not an ass kiss, it's an observation). You know, that reminds me. I was one of the people who mentioned how "Improvised" some of these solos sounded, and I was very impressed by that, since these are some of my favorite Petrucci moments. Well, live, he played them pretty much note for note. That means he either wrote the solos, or went back and figured out what he did (a la Mike Keneally). I was hoping to see some more of his fresh improv style, because that guy keeps getting better and better! > From: Luke > Subject: HELP > If you were to send a single 90 minute tape to someone you had never met > (but corresponded with frequently via email), in order to convert them > to into a DT fan, what songs would you put on this tape considering that > their previous musical tastes consisted of bands like Offspring, > Silverchair, Nirvana, Bon Jovi and Celine Dion This is such a common thread that I think if we can come to an agreement on what would make a good tape setlist, we should add it to the FAQ. (Oh boy, am I gonna get FAQed if it's already there!). Could we maybe all send our set list ideas directly to Luke, and then have him post the final result on what he decides to put on the tape? To those of you who got screwed by not getting shirts at your concerts, I wouldn't worry too much, if I were you. I expect that they'll eventually have them for sale on the DT web page, and we already know that the band is going to be coming around again... Only a matter of time. Take care! (Reviewed in Scream #37 by; Asgeir Mickelson) This is the typical fright scenario where a CD contains way too much music. Get rid of half of it and you might come up with a great album... "Falling Into Infinity" is a kick in the balls on every true fan of progressive metal - the band can hardly be described as a prog metal band anymore. They still have some technical parts here and there, but they've become too cheezy! I will say they appeal more to fans of commercial metal than prog fans. I'm not saying they have bad songs, but most of the fans who like their first two albums won't be very happy with this new one. On the other hand - do you like "Awake" then you'll probably like it. There's plenty of OK stuff here, but they never manage to go through the roof. It's almost as they're holding back. I give them 4 out of 6 for the proffesionalism, but I don't like to do it! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Nov 1997 17:49:18 +0000 From: Jon Parmet To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Curiously Strong Opinions Message-ID: Kevin: > First, I wouldn't think it would be a good idea to condense this forum > any for "official" consumption. Well, Rogerio quoted his aunt saying 'are you listening to this non-technical popular music again?' or something along that lines... She wasn't saying that it was too loud or such things that some other may say...her comment was regarding the technicality and complexity of the song (what song was it, btw?) which is lower than classical compositions' complexity and technicality. > > Also, DON'T SUPPORT APOCALYPTICA! Apocalyptica is a band made of people with > > no compositional skills. > > How do you know? Have you heard anything they've written? Ok, I take that back...I meant to say that they don't show their compositional skills, thus making musicians who compose music and have the guts to put it out, instead of taking the safe path of playing other people's composition, are superior to them. > I suppose you feel that DT should never do cover songs, because it doesn't > exploit their compositional skills. I will not buy a DT album solely made up of cover songs. First I drove from Michigan Tech where I go to school to Detroit on thurs night with five of my friends. On Fri I picked up a copy of ACOS and saw U2 at the silverdome awsome show. Then went to Chicago to see DT on Sat. another great show. **************SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER*************** The chicago show was great. I got to the line around 6:00 and was wearing only a tee shirt so I was damn cold. (hi to the jammer I stood by, I believe you were from Minn and had a orange?? jam shirt on. Once the doors finally opened we rushed up stairs and were about 5 people back from the stage. Wen I first got my shirt I thought it was the wrong size because the sleeves were so long. The opening band Big Weck was pretty dickish. To everyone writing in about the guy who yelled, there seemes to be a dispute as to what was yelled. I can tell you 100% that "Hell Ya Budweiser rules" was what was yelled. How do I know this for sure?? Because I yelled it, yes thats right I'm the bud guy. The bands comeback was something like "how many albums do you have out? ya I thought so, thats why were up here and your not. Get a hair cut." This last comment is somewhat bewildering because my hair is only about 1" long. Also my comment was making fun of the un professionalism of the band, I once saw the bassest smoking and drinking in mid song, he was so determined to light his cigarette that he missed some of his lines. When DT finally came on it was great. The everybody was singing. halfway through the show some guy tried to start moshing, but no one took so he's standing there like "what the F*($% people actually want to listen to this?" After recieving plenty of mean look he stoped. People were going nuts trying to get Portnoys drum stick, they must have fought for 5 min. The encore was great. Nightmare Cinama was awsome. They also played a bit a U2's Discotheque and Metallica's "one." Quite the show, I relly like New Mill. as the opener. I thought Pull Me Under would have also been a good encore song. Someone please write in the setlist. If not, scroll down or delete because here comes a major ************** S P O I L E R ******************** ************** S P O I L E R ******************** ************** S P O I L E R ******************** The set list for the Chicago show was the following: Well, first, before the DT, over the speakers they played: Cover My Eyes (which is still stuck in my head) Raise The Knife Where Are You Now The Way It Used To Be Speak To Me Rooster (Alice In Chains) Now for the actual show: New Millennium, Burning My Soul, Voices, Under A Glass Moon, Hollow Years, Puppies on Acid, Crimson Sunrise/Innocence, Just Let Me Breathe, Peruvian Skies, Pull Me Under, some short unfamiliar jam segue to Scarred, Darkest Of Winters, The Ytse Jam (in which DS played the main riff with some classical sound keys at one point right before the key solo). MP came in with the drum solo and everyone else walked off the stage. Then DS came on stage and played a little keys and then came Lines In The Sand, another short unfamiliar jam segue to Inevitable Summer/Crimson Sunset with a bit of A Fortune In Lies and Lie to finish it off. The came the encore. The played Metropolis. In the middle of the instrumental section (or towards the end of it) they started playing another little jam unfamiliar to me, then finished off the instrumental section of Metropolis, stopped and switched instruments for Nightmare Cinema (Perfect Strangers). MP announced that this was the 2nd time they've done this and the U.S. debut. Then they switched back to DT mode and played a small part of U2's Discotheque and then finished the rest of Metropolis with a bit of the rif of Metallica's One to finish it off. Then we heard the lounge version of Under A Glass Moon over the speakers. How's that for elaborate :) I typed the list in block form so the people not wanting to read it can pass over it easier without accidentally reading any of it. -~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_- | Robert Taylor The world may seem flown away | | email_address_removed Almost as if it cannot be saved | | The Phoenix Will we be able to rise | | From these ashes we've sown | -~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_- ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 3194 **************************
