I just wanted to point out that I think those of you who had a bad experience with them may have just seen the product of the way they've been treated on stage. When they were here in Columbus they were well accepted by the crowd, and in return gave us a good show. They sounded pretty damn good for "grunge", and it seemed as though they were putting their heart into it. MILD CONCERT SPOILERS****************************************** On to a brief DT comment (Columbus show) Man, do they have some fucking determination! The stage was about the size of a cat litter box, and there was enough smoke in the room to kill a grizzly bear. Not even an operational smoke-eater in the fuckin place. My friend ended up having such a bad asthma attack that he was hospitalized overnight. I tell ya I thought I was gonna be sick in there.. I just about spit my drink out from laughter when JLB said: "Hey anyone got a cigarrette?" ...then someone actually gave him one...ROFL! He was like "this guy thinks I'm serious. dude, I don't smoke" So DT, I have to commend you guys! I know it was a bitch being on that stage in Columbus, and it probably hurt James LaBrie pretty bad, but you guys KICKED ASS anyway!!!!!! I *loved* the way they kept mixing parts of ACOS in between the main songs, and the guitar solo in Under a Glass Moon ripped my freaking head off! Acutally, everything JP did left me in a daze and amazed....did anyone notice that the soundman kept fucking up JP's volume??? It would go real loud then like someone hit a switch, go real quiet. Most noticeable in Metropolis. I wanted to kill him (soundman). Overall, as you all probably know, they were simply incredible, despite the adverse conditions under which they had to perform. I don't know how they can do that every night...I woke up hurting the next day just from watching the show :) but it was worth it! It felt great to see them after all this time, and I cant wait til they come back again!!!!!!!!!!!! buster PS - that was my first real DT concert!! As some of you know, I was kicked out of my first DT show cuz I went into the alley next to the bar and took a wiz (the bathroom was full and I HAD TO GO!!) during the 4th song! Needless to say, I held it through this one 8^) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Nov 1997 02:44:57 -0400 (EDT) From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Shirts!!!!!! Show after mine!!!!!!! Argh! Message-ID: Damn it! Chicago show gets to buy shirts but the Detroit show doesn't... that about sucks! Oh well, at least we got to.....umm.....yeah, take that! :P About Big Wreck...hmm.....I can sum it up in the following statement: What the hell was wrong with the bass player's neck? He kept doing this funky neck - I'm having a seizure - catch me now I'm falling twirly thing that was just plain dumb. And I felt the band was a cross between STP and the late great Stevie Ray Vaughn. Especially when the guitarist went into solo action. But in conclusion.....I wanted a shirt! If you were to send a single 90 minute tape to someone you had never met (but corresponded with frequently via email), in order to convert them to into a DT fan, what songs would you put on this tape considering that their previous musical tastes consisted of bands like Offspring, Silverchair, Nirvana, Bon Jovi and Celine Dion This might sound like a lost cause or 'Mission Impossible', but since these were 'kind of' similar to my tastes before I heard DT, I reckon I can get another convert with person I am planning to send the tape to. Obviously I want to put the easily accessible songs, like PMU, on there just to stir initial interest so they don’t cringe and give up without trying (it took me a while to get into DT at first as well). Yet I also want to put some songs on that reflect the 'true DT' so they're not given the impression that DT’s trademark revolves around songs like PMU and TSM. I’m considering ones like; YtseJam PMU TTT UAGM WFS/LTL CIAW Mirror/Lie Scarred SDV YNM PS HY LITS TAMP Obviously I’ll have to cut some to fit them all on the tape, but do you reckon these songs are appropriate for a potential conversion ? All HO’s please…. Luke. PS. If I pull this off this conversion, that’ll be my 8th conversion in just over a year. Not bad results considering I live in Australia. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Nov 1997 07:51:45 -0800 From: Brian To: email_address_removed Subject: DT mondegreen of the day Message-ID: I've decided to re-post my favorite DT misheard lyric in honor of Chris adding it to the FAQ ]From Status Seeker: "I want to blow you know. Well if you want some info about opeth, please check: . It is a very preliminary homepage about Opeth that I wrote a while ago and I'd like to receive some comments on it. PLEASE, WRITE! About Opeth's music, even after 2 months of continuous listening, I still find things on the songs that I haven't heard before. > Initially, I was very impressed by the instrumental side of the music. Indeed, those acoustic interludes are simply beautiful. Highly melodic. And the best of it all: it won't get played on radio. So you'll probably never get tired of them. > They kind of remind me of FW, yet a bit simpler and much darker/heavier. > The guitarist is great, the dark, moody atmosphere he creates really > appeals to me and he seems to be the driving force behind band's style. It is, indeed. The guitarrist, Mike Akerfeldt, is the person who writes most of the stuff in Opeth. > As far double-bassing is concerened, the drummer's probably got the > fastest set of feet I've heard in a long time (although he overuses it > way too much). Really? Do you think he overuses it?? Incredible. I think that he should use it way more. And don't you find it interesting the interlude in "Forest of October", where there is only double-bass and acoustic guitar?? Man, that is very weird, although very much atmospheric. > Yet aside from these aspects of the band, does anyone else think the > leader singer's evil, slealthy, death-metal growl ruins the music ? > > I reckon he totally f**ks the music. I've never liked really evil, That's because you've never heard In Flames :-). The black metal-ish vocals are simply incomprehensible (I can even understand what Opeth's singer is yelling/grwoling, but nothing from In Flames'). BTW, do any of you know about a band called Dark Tranquillity (it's not a typo)?? I've heard that they are the masters of melodic death metal, but I can't find their albums. Talk about obscure. > growling singers so I'm probably biased, but honestly, for the few > briefs seconds he does sing normally (ie. without growling), his voice > shows awesome potential and it's where the band, IMHO, really shines. His voice rocks, doesn't it? I mean, he has a completely different style from LaBrie, but is "isomorphic" to LaBrie on the heavier/darker side of rock-n-roll. > FYI, the songs I heard were; Forrests Of October, In The Mist She Stands > Waiting, The Twilight Is My Robe, The Apostle In Triumph, Under A > Weeping Moon. IMO, the best songs on this album ("Orchid") are the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th (not bad, considering that the album has 7 tracks). The rest have some good ideas, but is like your usual black metal band (maybe a bit more melodic/atmospheric). The 3rd song is called "Sillouette" and has only piano. Very beautiful. No vocals. The only drawback is its length: 3 minutes only. The ending of the 4th song, "Forrest of October", is something that gives me chills every time I hear. The 5th, "The Twilight Is My Robe", is simply the best song on the album. It's style anticipates the style of their next album, "Morningrise". I think that you'd prefer "Morningrise" to "Orchid" if you don't like the black vocals that much. "Morningrise" even has an almost entirely acoustic track, with *NO* death/black vocals. > It's a shame they use this style of singing which, for me at least, > turns me off them totally. Initially (after hearing some of the Again, after hearing Amorphis and In Flames, I not even noticed that Opeth's vocals were those "screams". I just felt the vocal styles fit the songs very well (also considering the lyrics here, that almost always talk about delusions in love and the feeling of being betrayed or so... I don't know if I dug Opeth because I was having a similar passage in life or if the songs are good enough to be shining on their own). > instrumental aspects) I was thinking these guys could be my next fav > band. Well, they are my second favorite band. DT and Metallica are still tied as first (with DT rapidly becoming the first)... > With a more 'digestable' lead vocal style, I reckon Opeth could win > several more fans here in the prog/power metal community.
