From what I understand, the typical day on tour consists of (starting after the show) packing shit, shooting the shit (fan obligations), travel, sleeping, eating, setting shit up, doing a little local press, eating, soundcheck, schmooze with locals, play the show, repeat ad nauseum. I kinda thought about telling you guys about them a while ago, but they are a bit more Alternative than Prog...the Drummer Scott is a Badass, and a friend. Creed is from Tallahassee,Fl (I live here) and I was originally trying to get them signed with a label I was working for here in Tally. I got a demo from them, and right when I was about to take it to the owner of the label, Scott told me they were doing studio work with a local guy. So...a band that I originally sought out finally released thier CD here in Tally and it's sold TONS of CD's within just a few months, as well as recieved a TON of airplay here. I was the doorman for their first gig...so this is WAY too cool to hear a Jammer speaking of them. If anyone wants to give Creed a listen, I can Definetly get you a CD, and I think the guys would be seriously flatter to here that they have been heard of in Boston. All of you drummers on the jam...I kid you not...Scott is a TOTAL Madman! Unfortunatly I don't think the CD gives you a great idea of what he can do. They are WAY better live. O.k. I just noticed that I still have a copy of Netscape on my computer, and when i went to uninstall it, i found all my old jams in the mail prog!! It's all there... Bafu, EOJ's, what is music, etc. Brought back some memories. Dare I say the good old days? In the nostalgia spirit from reading all those jams, I got out WDADU (which i haven't listened to in quite a while) and stuff. Ahh. I was thinking, it seems DT tends to play mostly new songs in their concerts (as most bands do, and it makes sense) but i was thinking, what would the absolute perfect setlist be? Of course, this would be different for nearly everyone, but there have to be some songs that are generally recognized as some of DT's best - I'd really like to see Ytsejam, OAMOT, TOWHTSTS, TTT, Metropolis pt I, LTL, Erotomania (do they play that? That's one I'd love to see)/Voices, Scarred, TAMP, JLMB, LitS, and ToT. Boy, it was hard choosing their best ones - and even then i'm sure this setlist would make for a 5-hour concert or sumfin :) Not that that'd really be a bad thing... OK, that's enough out of me for now. This isn't related to this little discussion here, but it reminded me of Saturday night's Chicago DT show. Pellaz and I went to the show with my sister Kelly who happens to live in Chicago. She's not really into rock much (she used to be though) and she's a connesuer (sp?) of sorts of classical music. She usually considers most rock to be...less talented etc etc and all of that. Well, I convinced her to buy a ticket to go to the show with Paul C. and me, and after the show was over, and we were all leaving, I asked her what she thought of it, and she was like, "Those guys are AWESOME!" and, "They were really professional and treated their fans very nice" and said something to the equivalent that we (Paul and I) had CONVERTED her into Dream Theater! WOW! I wasn't ready for that response. I was expecting something like, oh yeah, they were better than most, but blah blah blah...Anyways, that was cool and this post I just quoted reminded me of that. I WISH most other ppl could see the light now and then and then maybe bands with the talent level of DT would get more deserved RECOGNITION. **DEREK Sherinian: If you happen to be reading this, I was the weirdo that was up in front with the red Ytsejam shirt on that was holding up that autographed ticket (which was from Birch Hill). heh. However, the music was interesting enough to make me listen a couple more times. Eventually, i came to realize that the growling is more of an 'evil poem' being recited over the music. Really, the guitars usually carry the melody, and are the main point of focus. Also, from the songs you say you heard, it seems to me you heard 'Orchid' which i havent heard. I only have Morningrise, which from what I've heard is more complex and dynamical than Orchid...and also has a ballad with zero death vocals, very pretty. tada, Ernesto ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Nov 1997 22:54:46 +0000 From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Chicago, the ONLY place to be... :) Message-ID: Okay.... this one is a moderate spoiler, as it will contain a little information about the setlist, but most of it will be info about the Chicago show this past Saturday in particular, so ... maybe I'll just say it in lower case... :) *spoiler* Now, at the risk of "Forcing my opinions on everyone", here's my concert review: After all of the stress of trying to organize for the show (I was helping -or hindering- several jammers with directions, and was supposed to be helping with transportation) we finally got to the show. I noticed immediately that some of the HoB people were really cool, and some were complete butt-monkies. Anyways, we bumped into Myung on his way in, and he said (though quietly) "Excuse Me" so... maybe he's starting to develope an attitude like that LaBrie jerk (that's a joke... LeBrie's never been anything less than amazingly cool on stage and off to me and my friends). I met TONS of jammers there--more than I expected to see. I felt like I was working the crowd, since everywhere I went, someone was shaking my hand and saying "So YOU'RE the asshole". Everyone was extremely cool though, and I am honored to have met so many of you. We were right up front, and I basically stood there as a barrier for Maddy so she wouldn't get crushed into stage pudding (though I injured her more times than the crowd could have... what can I say, I was going NUTZ!). Everything you've heard about Big Wreck is pretty much true. The band is a perfect mismatch for this tour. The guitarist (not the Emilio Estevez dude) was very talented... huge Steve Morse style chromatics; but he had an attitude on him, and we all got the impression that he was kind of a poser, since he literally DID change to a different guitar for each song (where I only recall a few necessitating the change). They're sort of a Led Zep/Grunge crossbreed, with a decent player as a frontman. Their drummer might as well have had LED lights for eyes and a face that was tattooed "Boss" because he was no more lively than a drum machine. All in all, I would have enjoyed them if I weren't waiting for Dream Theater, and if the dude wasn't insulting the crowd. After a long break, OFB came onstage, and started out with New Millenium, Burning My Soul, and Voices. After that i lost track of exactly which songs and exactly which order. They did the traditional ACoS mix up through all of their songs, and later did the same thing with Metropolis (after the big rollercoaster instrumental part, they jumped into several other tunes). Off the top of my head, they played Hollow Years, Scarred, PMU, Ytsejam (ROCK!), Lines in the Sand, and Peruvian Skies as well. Now I personally thought the sound was awesome, and I thought that the band was tighter than I expected. There were only a few minor mishaps during the show. Discussing it with Gabbo and company, it seems they were pretty pissed about something with their sound. I can only assume it was the monitors, since I couldn't hear any problems myself... but that's just me. Watch out, people, Mike Portnoy can SPIT. He nearly missed Myung, and DID manage to hit Gabbo (who was all the way out at the front of the stage... that was some flight!). He also nailed (from our perspective and the dude's reaction) the camera guy with a drumstick! What stood out to me... John Petrucci has a huge stage presence, and he didn't have it the last two times I saw him (I&W and Awake tours). He was a freaking monster. I noticed at one point (the Voices solo) his guitar tech ran out to work the wah pedal while John was on the other side of the stage going off. Derek is a monster. If the sound is as good as it was to me at HoB, then most of you will gain a new respect for Derek when you see him on this tour. The shirts are IN!!!! To describe them (I can maybe make a black and white pic of anyone wants), they're navy blue, with half length sleeves (longer than short sleeve, shorter than long sleeve). They have the "blurry" DT name-logo, the Majesty logo, the infinity sign, and a guy with binoculars on the front. It says "Touring Into Infinity 97/98" as well on the front. On the back, they have the big phallus picture, and some imagery similar to what was on the front. Shirt price: $23. NIGHTMARE CINEMA! I had it in the back of my mind that they might do something like that, being that it was the day after Halloween and all. It ROCKED! Portnoy on bass, Derek on guitar (did a great job, btw!) Myung on keys (Also quite good!), JP on Drums, and LaBrie on vocals. They played Perfect Strangers like a bunch of maniacs! I will not forget this show! At the end, (After the Metropolis 2 encore... J/K) Portnoy threw out a couple drum heads. My friend in the balcony caught one of em! They're signed and numbered, it looks like (though it could have been a smudged date). Paul (Pellaz) remarked "Ah, he stole that idea from Mike Bahr!" All in all, the best DT show I've seen, and one of the best overall concerts/concert experiences I've had. I hope it was as fun for everyone else at the show as it was for me, and I hope Nightmare Cinema becomes a regular oart of their act, because that was a LOT of fun to watch!
