I have been to louder shows, but I wore my ear plugs anyway. Some lady standing next to me in Toad's made some smart ass comment to her (6'2") BF that "if it's too loud, you're too old." I didn't comment back (not interested in ruining the show for both of us by being as big a jerk as she). I just figured to myself that she was a Kiss fan who'd wandered in out of the cold or something. We also suffered a little as a result of the tall guys, but just moved around them. The only really bad experience we had there was when this little falling down drunk squirrelly guy pulled a 6" dagger. He used it to cut through the net separating the 21 and over area from the general area (to get to the general area -- go figure). He gave me a start though, when he turned around with it in his hand. Not really what I expect at a DT show. Oh well. Pretty soon, he had this whole fantasy world constructed in his mind about this woman and their life together...something like that, anyway, and that's what the song is about. Actually, that comment I believe came from all the people shouting "you suck!" from the crowd (and although I didn't like the band, I think they deserved at least a little more credit than that). The singer replied with "So how many records do you have released?", followed by the "That's why we're up here and you're not!". The problem was the matchup. Most Dream Theater fans aren't into the grunge (or whatever you call them) style that Big Wreck is. Being a short one (5'5"), also, I chose not to do the floor thing (especially since I didn't go in real early) and stood behind the soundboard for a good view and good sound. I had an interview with John P. before the show... we chatted about stuff most of the Jammers know already.... I'll sift through my tape recording of it... he gave me an update of his side projects. More details later... It was cool to meet a buncha Jammers... like I remember any names... but you know who you are... I had the South Park T-shirt on! Huh huh... I'll wear a different one for Milwaukee 2morrow night. Speaking of South Park... I gave John P. a copy of the Spirit of Christmas thing, and the first few episodes... so they probably have a fun bus ride to Minneapolis! Printouts... I chatted with Mike P. a little bit... I told him that I'd give him some Ytsejam printouts when I see him in Milwaukee tomorrow... and I'll just print 'em out raw...just like he'd be reading his e-mail (why would anyone do it any other way? ) I talked to John P. about the 'jam... and he says he just can read this stuff... it just gets to him sometimes... and well... I can't blame him! That's all for now. Matt ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 02 Nov 1997 15:56:24 -0500 From: "Christopher R. I never said that. What I said is that a person like Rogerio's aunt, who respects classical music and does not respect rock music, I think would be more receptive to something played with cellos than something played with electric guitars. Once she gets over the instrumentation boundary, she'll be able to experience the music without reservations, and can then judge the music based on the music, and nothing more. She'll be able to analyze the structures, the melodies, the composition, without the bias of "this was written by rock musicians." Then, when she hears the original version, maybe she'll realize that rock musicians are capable of more than she initially thought. > Also, DON'T SUPPORT APOCALYPTICA! It seems that someone here does not really understand two major forms of music. These are Classical and Jazz. Now, if you have never listened to either of these forms, then please refrain from commenting on them. If you have listened to them then you should know something about them, namely the fact that almost all of it is people playing someone else's music. Starting with classical... I take it you have problems with symphonies who "steal" other peoples music to make a buck, people like Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Lizst, etc. And then to Jazz... Ever heard a term "jazz standards?" These are songs written and played by an original artist, which are so good that they get played by everyone else in the Jazz world. Now finally I would like to ask you a question... Have you ever arranged anything? If you have and it is easier than tieing your shoe, then I give you props, otherwise don't diss on a group who tok a LONG time to arrange songs written and performed on guitars, bass, drums and vocals and arranged them for 4 cellos. Sorry bud, but there are many people out there in the Jazz and Classical musical worlds that make serious bank (and they deserve it!) for arrangement, and I think it is pretty petty for you to diss them by dissing Apocolyptica. Take it easy. -Shane ____________________________________________________________________________ Shane Liebling R "All of us get lost in the darkness, email_address_removed U dreamers learn to steer by the stars CAA Layman and Ytsejammer S All of us do time in the gutter, Member of a.m.m.o. since 1997 H dreamers turn to look at the cars." -------------------------------- The Sites --------------------------------- The Short Me - http://www.hotwired.com/members/profile/demolitionman/ The Long Me - http://www.earthlink.net/~mariachi Cal's RC5 Mirror Site - http://www.earthlink.net/~mariachi/rc5/ Deutsch Hall's Webpage - http://www.reshall.berkeley.edu/unit1/deutsch/ ---------------------------------- by Me ----------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 02 Nov 1997 16:14:17 -0500 From: "Christopher R. It was nice to meet all you jammers, too. This was my first show and I could not be more pleased. Well, after the concert I decided that I should probably go get some sleep and didn't go out with the jammers :( So on my way to the car I see the big, giant tour bus and several people standing there waiting. I was swayed and I stayed there for a while. After being thouroughly frozen (and waiting for, well, I'm not going to say how long), I went back inside the House of Blues to defrost. Then I saw the members of DT!! I didn't really have anything original to say and I could tell they were in a hurry so I just got everyone's autograph (except I couldn't catch JLB). Then they went outside and one of the roadies said to MP, "There's a crowd around the bus." I can only imagine what they were thinking since it was pretty cold out. So I had to fight my way through just to get to pass through and get to my car, also :) Anyway, the setlist was pretty much the same except totally reordered.
