You're right, I do not want to see this, nor, I"m sure, are many ppl going to want to read the following thread, but I feel the need to stick up for Chris here. Now, this is getting rather old, boys - Clark specifically. Let's cut the crap, alright? At least Chris is making the effort to leave this alone. He's choosing not to participate in a flame war with you Clark - I would say *that* is maturity. Quit trying to pick a fight. It's not working, so get the hint and move on. > Nothing, obviously. But the guidelines of the subscription rules are >not nearly so clear-cut as you make them out to be. Your interpretation of >those guidelines is obviously different from some other peoples'. Just a quick subscription letter refresher: Welcome to YTSEJAM, the Dream Theater mailing list! This list is for fans of Dream Theater, and will discuss them and any related topics. (Related topics include other progressive metal bands like Fates Warning, King's X, Crimson Glory, Inferno, etc.) Topics that are considered non-related include religion, politics, abortion, etc. If a non-related thread lasts for too long, the list managers may issue a warning, followed by suspension or expulsion from the list. Based on those two paragraphs, I'd say Chris is interpreting the subscription letter quite well. >I did not resort to name-calling, and I didn't insult your mother or anything like >that. But saying - and this is paraphrasing - "who let Chris' two your old brother at the computer?" is any better? (Partial DTC here) Message-ID: Hi, people... Well, since that acoustic tape I asked recommendations for, I actually converted some people into progressive rock and heavy metal. And here comes me again looking for more recommendations from the list. But now I want something a little harder. I have an aunt that teaches piano and is *completely* biased against "popular music". You know that I know nothing about music theory (I've said this a couple of times here in this list) so I'm asking your help. She is very antipatic and one time, when I was listening to some Metallica, she told me "So, is this non-technical noise that you call music? Popular music is simply this. You can't even compare this to Beethoven's 'Emperor' or Mozart's 'Jupiter', which are much more subtle and also require a lot of technical training to be able to fully appreciate these masterpieces." Of course, she is indeed right to an extent, but I'd like to make her swallow her own words, showing her some popular but highly technical stuff. Could you, musicians of Ytsejam, please tell me what are the most hard-to-play popular music that you know (I've heard that Zappa has some songs that are almost impossible to play, but I don't know any of his works)? I don't know, should I show her Metropolis part I or is it too easy for a piano teacher? If they're supposed to mean a channel is changing, then each clip is on a different channel because there is a distinct crt squeal for "I haven't behaved as I should", "everything you need is around you", "the only danger is inside you", and a few more after that. I think it's highly unlikely that this is the case, because some of those are part of the same sample. I think the more realistic theory, at least for this song, is that those samples caused some sort of feedback. No, you'll just have to make your own tools (this, of course, might take a little time like a lifetime or two :) Don't get me wrong here. I'm not trying to put music studying down or anything. Humans also react to these emotions in different ways and these ways depend on ones personality and, again, on ones cultural background. When you were talking about music that make angry or make you cry you were referring to western music. If you heard something like ragas, what were mentioned before in this discussion, I bet you couldn't tell what emotion the performers were thinking of. Pick up "Apocalyptica", that album by the four cellists playing Metallica songs. She'll be able to listen with a (more) open mind, probably, because of the instrumentation. Don't tell her what it is, and see what she gets out of it. I happened to be in the local shopping mall with my brothers (my mother bribed me to take them somewhere, hey...how can you pass up an easy $20 like that?), wearing my Images 'n Words shirt, with the TTT quote on the back. While walking towards Dillards to buy 'Thrax/Pantera tix, my youngest brother (Sophmore in High school, does barbershop quartet, has perfect pitch, and listens to Boys II Men, Mariah Carey, and Wierd Al almost exclusively) asks me, "You can find all you need in your mind, if you take the time....What does that mean?" I looked at him kinda funny and said, "Do I _have_ to explain that to you? It's pretty self explanatory. It's from one of their songs...it's kind of a theme; 'Think for yourself.' 'Just close your eyes you can find all you need in your mind.'" He shrugged and replied, "Well, I don't find anything when I close my eyes." Merlo" To: email_address_removed Subject: REVIEW: Big Wreck "In Loving Memory Of" Message-ID: There are two types of bands in this world: those who ought to share a stage with Dream Theater, and those who would make an odd combination. This is not a measure of how "good" a band is (whatever that means), just how similar to DT they are. There are a couple of bands that would fit right in at a DT concert (Altura and Marillion come to mind) that just don't do it for me. Similarly, there are plenty of bands that probably wouldn't fit at a DT show that are great bands nevertheless. Big Wreck is one of the latter. My first impression of this album is that these guys spent a lot of time listening to "Physical Grafitti"-era Zeppelin and Soundgarden. They seem to combine most of the likeable aspects of these two seemingly disparate styles. Strong guitar grooves, post-grunge vocals, and some interesting song structures make for quite a few memorable tracks. I would probably enjoy seeing these guys open for your basic rock band, like Soul Asylum or someone like that. Not to say that I won't enjoy seeing them open for DT (now that I am familiar with the music), but they won't get me psyched to see DT the way a Fates or Spock's would. Oh, well. A good disc anyway. I'll keep listening to this. I don't know, but there are lines that sound as if they have been influenced by religious teachings: "Night awaits the Lamb's arrival..." -UaGM The "Lamb" refers to Christ in His second coming (if that's what you believe) "Judas on the ceiling...the Devil in my bed...I guess Easter's never coming..." -Voices (duhh) Obvious Christian influences here. Then again, "There are no answers from voices above..." -TTT Obviously not religious, or possibly Buddhist. I'm not suggesting that they're Christian, or anything else for that matter, but I often see band members wearing what look like crosses...who knows? They could also be well versed in religious texts and make references just as literary writers do. Does anyone know why LaBrie's vocals sound a lot more head-voice-ish in HY? "Bury me in the sand..."
