I wonder just how many individuals out there would like to send in a post just so they can be a part of DT fan collective, but are terrified of being torn apart by someone with a different view. I was apprehensive about sending in a post and I found myself carefully stating my message in a way so as not to offend anyone. Everyone has an opinion, which is fine and only human; likewise everyone deserves some respect. Kind of like "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." But enough being negative, lets get to something positive. You can't imagine how much I appreciate hearing all those reviews of DT's concerts! Just when I think that I can't get anymore psyched about seeing them live on Nov. 19th(I pickup my tickets tonite!), someone posts a great review and I become even more anxious to see them! I'll probably end up having a heart-attack and not even make it to the concert! Can't wait!!! Keep the concert reviews coming! (Any Jammers going Metropol Nov. 19th? Are there any Jammers in Western Pennsylvania at all?) I always find it amusing when people argue about bandwidth and what belongs on the list, all the while wasting more precious "bandwidth". Who cares? I'm not interested in at least 60% of what's on this list, but I just skip it. I don't know why you have appointed yourself the ytsejam content police, Chris, but there are probably more people interested in these "off-topic" topics than you think. And, incidentally, while I don't generally agree with alot of the things Serrousi posts, I think that the post he was responding to was absolute crap, and I can understand where he was coming from. She was NOT saying that the content on the list is not related to DT. If she had a point at all, which I seriously question, it seemed to be that we need more of the "DT rulez" type posts that Seroussi was parodying (is that a word?).Well, I have no interest in those, so I demand that people stop posting them. Whatever. Well, I saw DT at Saint Andrews in Detroit last night, which I wasn't going to bother posting about, but since I'm already writing I'll say a few things. This was my first DT show, and, not to rain on anyone's parade, but it was one of the least enjoyable concerts I have ever been to. I won't say that it was a BAD concert, because it wasn't, but my personal enjoyment of the show was ruined by the absolutely RIDICULOUS volume. I was in pain. I've seen my share of heavy metal concerts, but to play so loud in such a small venue is totally unnecessary. I don't know if that's the band's decision or not. But when I was close to the stage, I couldn't make out any of the leads because the high-end was so piercing. It wasn't just a ringing in my ears, somehow the sound actually sounded like it was distorting to me because my ears were so fucked up. But enough of that, onto an actual ytsejam concert review. Performance: Besides a sick lead singer (with dark hair; when did that happen?), the performance was near-flawless, as expected. James, was sick as a dog, and so he sang alot of parts an octave low, but he actually sounded quite clean, if not clear. No dirty screeches. And, we got to hear some interesting vocal improvisations, since he was constantly trying to decide which notes he could hit and which he couldn't. Everyone else was right on, although I couldn't really hear Derek very well all night. I love his goofy stage presence, though. Venue: shitty. We waited forever to get in (not that that's anything new), the sound was terrible, and the stage was the size of a postage stamp. Set list: The order was changed around a little, but no big surprises if you've been reading all the other spoilers. Lava lamps: they were on this time. T-shirts: I didn't see any, but I didn't look that hard. Company: I went with my girlfriend (who likes them, but isn't a real big fan) and Jeremy Garman, a fellow ytsejammer from Toledo. Both of them got to witness my wild temper when we parked within a block of the venue, then decided to look for a better parking space and ended up at least ten miles form from the place because I couldn't figure out how to turn around in Detroit. But that turned out ok. Jeremy was a good sport, since we ended up just sittingaround my house all day before the show. He never complained about being bored once, even though he probably was. :) The guys in the band: Don't know what they were like; I didn't stick around. I'm kicking myself for it now, though. I ended up getting back to school at about 4:00 am last night, as it was. I shall definitely see them again next year, but I shall be purchasing some ear plugs between now and then. -Clark ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 1997 17:49:22 +0000 From: Jon Parmet To: email_address_removed Subject: Brain dumped, please reboot Message-ID: Richard: > If all I ever see in this mailing list is "If DT asked me to bend > over I'd hand them the KY" I wouldn't be on it. I usually only get nasty when there appears to be this mind-game thing happening where the only goal seems to be if people can out stomp each others' cranium. Personally, I just find it gets boring after a short period of time (say, a post or 2? :) In addition, I notice a lot of jumping to extreme conclusions, for no apparent reason other than an emotional one. For example, someone will make a point about there not being enough positive conversation centered around DT. And what invariably appears a short time later is a post which more or less has the flavor of the above concerning "bending over" and shit. Maybe not the same words, but you get the idea. Now, I could be wrong (and, believe me, if I am, I'm more than prepared to deny I ever said it :), but I imagine there are plenty of people on here who greatly enjoy DT but not to the extreme painted in the replies. My question is, why the extremism? Can't someone ask for a little more DT content without it nessecelery indicating that they'd lick James' anus if he asked them to? I personally don't like it when people assume they know all about my personality makeup from 500 words or less on a computer screen, although some would argue that it could be summed up in 5 or less :) The interesting thing about a spectrum is that it only has two endpoints, but potentially many more points in between. Explore the boundaries, yes, but the majority can usually be found in between and all over. I know, I know, conform or be cast out, blah blah blah, everybody got to deviate from the norm, blah blah. Ytsejammers, what say you? When I "write" music, I don't actually physically write it down, (strange term, come to think of it,) I play it and record it. When I bring it to the bandmates, I do so by playing it for them myself, and also giving them a copy of the music on tape if they so wish. When I learn music, I do so by hearing it--if I need a clue, or want a hint at fingering, there is always tab. In my experience, limited though it is, I have played both covers and originals without ever reading a drop of the music. I do read, but only a little--for me, it's practically obsolete. Would I be better for learning more than my rudimentary knowledge? Yes. It's like Latin--you learn Latin and everything else clicks into place just a little more neatly. Is it necessary? Depends on your situation, and the forum of the music. For the ones I'm in, it's not. Obsolete is a strong term. I'll tell you what, though--if tape recorders had been invented back centuries upon centuries ago when music was first being recorded (as written on paper, their only method available), I wonder how much differently the process would have evolved... after all, music in essence is meant to be heard, and if they could have recorded it through audio means... this is a random thought, comment if you wish... Perhaps the problem here is that these posts requesting more DT discussion generally don't add any DT discussions themselves. If you want to read more DTC, post some DTC. People will respond in kind. And the post that started this discussion did not ask for more DTC, it specifically asked for more POSTIVE DTC. We're all DT fans on this list, obviously. So the positive aspects of the band are pretty much given. We all know why we like them. This is probably why a lot of the content on the list strikes some people as negative. To them, I would say again, if you don't want to read it, SKIP IT. I don't want to read your posts that say how great DT is without adding anythingnew to a discussion, but I don't bitch about it (until now), I just skip it. It won't kill you to do the same. -Clark ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 1997 13:31:33 -0500 From: "Blevins, Mike" To: "'email_address_removed'" Subject: RE: Dickdickdickdickdick :) Message-ID: Jim wrote... >>I shall definitely see them again next year, but I shall be purchasing >>some ear plugs between now and then. > >Ooh! Since this is my first time on the 'jam, I'd like to say that I'm very excited to be on here with the fans of the *best* band in the world! On topic: Musicians who CAN read music have an advantage over those who cannot, but that's not to say that they are necessarily better musicians. Many people teach themselves how to play music by ear and from reading TAB charts, which (as you all know) are MUCH easier. People who can read music have almost always had formal music training and often come across as being "better" merely because they have been taught by somebody who knows. However, technical skill is not a measure of musicianship. I'm sure there are lots of guitarists who can pick as fast as JP, but his musicality and musicianship are what set him (IMHO) above the rest, not his fast picking OR whether or not he can read music. True musicianship comes from the heart and soul, not from a treble or bass clef. You can surely communicate wonderful things with written music, but in the end, it is the EAR that the music talks to, not the eyes.
