Message-ID: Hi all He's back! Mr. Ptacek has been back with us but for a few days, and already flame wars are erupting that make the Great Fire Of London (1667) look like a damp fire cracker. All that quoting and double quoting - great stuff. How many times did we read 'dickdickdick' in the last Jams? Nice to see that so many other people listen to or are getting into the old Mahavishnu Orchestra stuff. I used to listen to these guys when I was a wee lad and other kids at school thought bands like Sweet and Slade were good. I even got to see them twice, once in the old classic line up, and once when Jean Luc Ponty was with them. Go dig out some of Ponty's solo albums if you're looking for some other good stuff. I can particularly recommend the album 'Enigmatic Ocean', with Darryl Stuermer and Allan Holdsworth on the guitars. Also, the album that Jan Hammer (yes, him of 'Miami Vice' fame) and Jerry Goodman (violin in the 1st Mahavishnu line-up) made is well worth looking for. It's called 'Like Children'. My opinion on Yanni? He should stick to porking Linda Evans. Humour tip for those of you with warped minds - go and read the 'Romeo and Juliet' story at the following address. BullSHIT! Adrian, I'm totally with you on this one. As a musician who can't read or write music, and learns to play everything by either ear or tab, I have to take offense to those who say that I can't speak the language of music. That is 100% entirely NOT TRUE. I can speak it perfectly well (Wacky!! You're the only one here who's heard my band!! Back me up!!). Can I read it if it's thrown down to paper in front of me? No. Neither can an illiterate man if you hand him 'The Catcher in the Rye.' That doesn't mean that he can't speak English perfectly well. Here's the rub: just because he doesn't know the semantics of the language DOESN'T MEAN HE CAN'T COMMUNICATE IN IT. And for those of you who say that your musicianship is sooooo much better than X or Y or Z because *you* can read and write music and *they* are ignorant sloths, just remember who's laughing all the way to the bank. -Nicholas (Mogus on IRC) "Print is Dead" -Igon Spengler (That seems totally appropriate at the end of this post....) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 1997 09:42:23 -0500 (EST) From: Pat Daugherty To: Dream Theater Mailing List Subject: VH Message-ID: Scott wrote: >Also, a while back, I used to have a VH bootleg called Dressed to Kill >which was the last show they did at the Pasadena Civic Center. It contains great versions of all the songs on the original demo that didn't make VH 1. The best thing about this boot was it only cost $35. Yep $35 for a 4cd boot. If not, they don't > belong on this list, DAMNIT!!!! Oh wait, MP likes 'em....Nevermind :) Not to mention you can hear the Beatles influence all over Anna Lee. Toronto highlights: After waiting quite a while in HMV while the crew of idiots set up the sound gear for an acoustic set (it ain't all that complicated folks!) DT came out and did HY, TSM, and TAMP. As mentioned, the first time they did anything like that in North America. JP and DS did some noodling that sounded cool and almost broke out into an acoustic Ytsejam (Mike Bahr would have killed for a copy of that, had it happened in full!). I got the back of my FII CD sleeve signed by the band. I asked James about doing a "Building Empires" type of video so we could actually see their videos! The Coles Notes summary -- These things take time, don't hold your breath. DS was cool, JP was cool, Mike was cool as always...said his back was in great shape for the show this time! JM was quite as usual! I totally forgot half of the questions I wanted to ask...I was in awe that I was actually talking to DT at the time...James actually had to ask my wife's name so he could make the autographs out to Greg _and_ Paula...sorry dear! James was very talkative...people behind me must have been getting pissed! The show set list was very much the same. DS had some cool effects with lava lamps and little lightning lamp thing-a-majiggie! Kinda set the mood for his gyrations toward the keyboards...The Chapman Stick is huge, and very cool looking! I was disappointed not hearing HK live. What is with all of MP's spitting? He could have covered half of the Warehouse with his spiddle! Hey Lugie...you and I must have been close from your description of where you were standing! Tapes played all sorts of stuff including DT unreleased songs and some RATT and Sammy Hagar. After the show a very Sinatra sounding UaGM" played ... very funny! I was a bit disappointed with the way "Scarred" sounded live...I would have rather heard "Surrounded" now...ah well! DT is back in Toronto today filming the video for BMS (I assume), their first single according to James. Some little tart was totally in love with JP, gave him a couple of cheek smooches at the autograph session and gave him the old "do me" eyes all thru the show...too bad he's married, she was a hot little number, but he was totally uninterested...what a guy! Good news for Canadian 'jammers...DT will be back in '98 to do a Canadian tour. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 1997 10:01:47 -0500 From: email_address_removed To: " - (052)ytsejam(a)ax.com" Subject: Re: Literacy and Yanni Message-ID: <0010200001724973000002L032*@MHS> > From: Steve Zebrowski < Subject: Yanni > < > Steve Z remarked: > > >Yanni can't read music. Mike has yet to get a laptop for this tour and until he does he can't read the Ytsejam which he says he does quite frequently. He's asking for someone with the resources to make hard copies of all the Ytsejams that are posted while they're on tour and to mail them to him. Now he didn't give me an address of where to mail them, but I think someone out there must know how. I don't have the resources for a project of this magnatude or I would do it. I think this is the point I was trying to make before, but you said it more eloquently than I. I still think that the symbols on the printed page are less important than the sound of the music itself. Music is the universal language, IMHO. Steve also remarked: > > I also happen to think that the music sounds like he doesn't know what > > he's doing. My opinion. I'm not saying it sounds like random garbage, > > but that it sounds like if I asked him what he did harmonically at a > > certain point he would say, "i don't know." I don't think whether you know the technical terms for the musical magic you're performing should matter. Nuno Bettencourt, for example, is totally self taught. He can't read a note to save his life; he knows a few scale names and things but not much. An interviewer asked him about this once and he just chuckled. He said, "If it sounds good then play it!" and I tend to agree with him. If you don't care for Yanni's music, that's fine. You and I aren't going to see eye to eye on it, but that doesn't matter. :) I'd like to hear other opinions on this -- is it important to read music, or not? Ytsejammers, what say you?
