Am I an >elitist? Maybe. I'll put my musicianship up against Yanni's anyday. "Speak the language"? Don't be ridiculous. The only language he needs to speak is the language of music itself. I don't give a shit if he can't write or read music, he composes in his own private shorthand. It's how the music sounds that's important, not what the symbols on a printed page look like, or even if there are any symbols at all! Yanni works closely with the people who transcribe his piano folios, making sure that anything that goes into the music books matches the original composition note-for-note. As for musicians who can't read or write sheet music -- I seem to recall that a certain Eddie Van Halen doesn't know how to read or write music either. Correct me if I'm wrong (and I'm sure you will). Does this make him any less talented? The fuck it does. The things being discussed in the e-mails I responded to had nothing to do with music at all, let alone DT or other progressive music. If you care to postulate on the way your mind works, and how all progressive fans hear things better than other people, or any of these things that people have been discussing as of late (Algebra???) feel free to start a mailing list for it. This is not that list. I know you're not responsible for all of that stuff, but at the same time, I never pointed the finger at you. Now as far as "speculating on how they think"... that's just a bizarre and impossible concept for me. You have no way of doing anything like that... if you want to try to learn how YOU think, go to Tibet and beat up some kung fu ninja monks; being a long standing member of this list, I don't recall it ever being changed to "Psychology Jam". I wouldn't subscribe to that list. I didn't even say anything about this shit for about a week... I thought the thread would die. But this is getting absurd. It's time to take it to private e-mail... I will not agrue that it is an intelligent discussion. My point is that it's an intelligent discussion that doesn't fall under the charter of this list. With the drivel comment I was knocking someone else for an insulting post, aimed at a friend. Go back and look at what I quoted right above the "drivel" line. Go on, do it. That's nice. The thread (to me, and I tried to keep my > posts like this) was mainly about intelligent conversation about a _wide_ > variety of subjects. To label the whole thread 'whining' and I'm very glad you read my post so well before commenting. Perhaps though, you should read other posts as well. There has been an inordinate amount of poeple whining about who is more intelligent (Dt fans or pop fans) and several other things. Carol is the one who decided to comment on those, and I was clarifying. If you think I misrepresented the sentiment she was making, e-mail her, and you two can resolve that. She and I have discussed this very subject. > 'nonsensical' is, well, lame. And, if you never question, or formulate > opinions on something, how do you ever learn? When I said "nonsensical" I certainly WAS referring to the discussions you've been taking part in. I'm sorry it's so lame. I'll try to be "way cool" from now on. Still, you do not possess the understanding of the human mind that you form your discussion about. You don't KNOW how the human mind "thinks". It's not an understood concept at this point in our scientific paradigm... to sit here and give us your theories on the topic is again, to stray wildly from a reasonable topic. If you figure it out, publish a book. You'll never be able to fit it into 25k of bandwidth. > > You're being a dick. > > > > But don't take that too seriously. > > That's _really_ nice. You insult someone seriously, then say don't take > it seriously? WTF? Who's the dick? You can take this post as seriously > as you like, everything I said I said for a reason. Again, thanks. I was referring directly to someone else's post with that. READ THE REST OF THE JAM, instead of just jumping down my throat. This is not a fucking popularity contest. "You're Being a Dick" is an inside joke that was meant to get a chuckle from some of my YtseVeteran friends. "But don't take that too seriously" was aimed at the person that I was responding to, because he himself said that after tearing into one of my friends. Thanks for playing along. I'm sorry if I insulted your sensibilities in finding the dead thread out of place. But I don't really feel bad about making the comments I did. Any thread is cool for a while... even Spice Girls.
