I HATE Yanni's music. For you to say that because of that I don't like DT very much is pretty darn presumptuous. Korn has similarities to DT. I don't like them either. I guess that means I don't like DT. Yanni can't read music. It pisses me off that the ignorant masses tout him as a great musician and composer when he doesn't speak the language. Is this the elitism that was mentioned a few 'jams back? Maybe. Am I an elitist? Maybe. I'll put my musicianship up against Yanni's anyday. As for Tesh, I hate his music, too, but he's a talented musician and a pretty good player. We left from Ottawa at 12 and got to TO at about 1/4 to 5. Then we went to check out their gig at the HMW Store. Wow.. this was so wicked. They said it was the first time something like this was done in North America, they were running a bit late so they only played 3 songs, TAMP, Silent Man and Hollow Years. It was really great, Portnoy even teased us with a mini mini drum solo, and also at the end... they were fooling around.. and played the begining of NM and YJ. I was in the front row... about 5 feet from John... WHOA!! that close to my idol. My friend got to take a lot of pictures, so those should be cool to see. Aftwerwards, there was an autograph session, I didn't have nothing to get something signed on, cuz the posters were all gone.. argh so I went and bought the Silent Man single.. which included a demo version of TTT and Eve (2 tracks I didn't have) and got them to sign it. When I came across Derek and said, you seem to have so much fun on stage, people on the Ytse Jam kinda compare it to you making love to your keyboard, he was like... What? and started laughing his ass off. =) Then we got to to the show... really enjoyed their unreleased tracks at the beginning of the show. Of course, the show totally kicked butt... but I didn't get to see them play HY, would of loved to see John with his double neck guitar, even though I saw it on the soundcheck... Umm.. oh well.. All the syncrhonised solos were right on, very good performance. They said they will be doing more shows in Canada.. sometime in 98.. good news for us canadians. Well bye for now.... they totally kicked my ass... DT rulez!!! I agree. I did not care much for Jacob's Ladder until I heard Sebastian Back on vocals and JP on guitar. Now it is one of my fave Rush songs because I went back and listened to the original a lot too. Strange how I basically go to know the entire Permanent Waves album one song at a time. I put it in my car and fiddled with the equalizer some (MO has shitty recording quality), and I could hear a whole lot more. Overall, I think they're both awesome, but they are an acquired taste certainly. The shit's just too weird for someone to jump right into it! Also, I think the screwy song I asked about is One Word on Birds of Fire, but I'm not sure, and I don't know the signature and the quarter note value, so both questions still stand. jason ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 1997 03:11:33 -0500 From: Pat Sullivan To: email_address_removed Subject: Back from beyond. If DT become popular, they will attract the sort of fans who don't >appreciate and study the music. I know *I* qualify for that label, so there's already some of those here, too. I agree with the sentiment though. This list seems to have a contingent of people who want to be the "best" DT fan, as though merely liking the band and being on the list isn't enough. Relax folks, it's not a competition. There's plenty of room here for everyone, even people who you may not like. ----- > My high school art >teachers favorite expression was "you have to know the rules before you >can break them." That's the most profound thing I've heard in a long time (or at least, in the last couple of days. :)) I think that focuses in on my own disappointment with "pop" bands today. I admit, there are some bands I listen to that are guilty pleasures. I'll use The Offspring as an example - not very technical. The very fact that they don't know "the rules" limits their ability to express themselves musically. Since all their songs sound the same, I have difficulty sometimes remembering which songs are on which albums. It would be extememly difficult to write a great piece of literary work if you were only allowed to use 10 or 11 letters of the alphabet. Imagine if under the same circumstances, you didn't even know the other 15 or 16 letters even existed. ----- >Well, here's the way I see it: computer programming is pretty much a form of art... >programming = creating a program...you need to be creative to create something... As a programmer, I'd like to agree that it's more math than art...If it were art it would be more akin to a jigsaw puzzle - You take the "pieces" and assemble them until they "create" your end result. But a jigsaw puzzle may *look* like art when it's finished; but that has nothing to do with the person that *assembled* it. :) ----- Only 11 more jams to go and I'm caught up..... _____Pat Sullivan_____________________________________ E-Mail: email_address_removed WWW: http://www.ici.net/cust_pages/psull/psull.html IRC: DDictator ICQ: 2049374 ______________________________________________________ There cannot be a crisis today; my schedule is already full. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Oct 1997 21:16:38 -0800 From: Arash Ashouriha To: email_address_removed Subject: DT in "Heavy oder was" !!! All songs are brand new. I'm sure this gone be another master pice. ------------------ As a big New Age fan, here some artists, you must hear : Jean Michel Jarre : He's the one and only godfather of synthesizer music. ]From his OXYGENE album in 1976 to his new OXYGENE 7-13, all albums are awesome. Each album sounds great. Do you remember his city concert in Housten 86 ? More then 1300000 peoples where there to see Jarre's great live show. In September more than 3000000 people have seen his Oxygene in Moscow concert. He is just incredible. I love his music since I was 5 year old !!!! Mike Oldfield : A multi talent. He play more than 20 instruments. His first album TUBULAR BELLS (1973) is awesome and very comlpex. Check it out. "AMAROK" from 1990 shoud be the most uncommercial album in the world. A 60 min songs full of experiments and effects. In this album Oldfield played over 60 instruments. Most of Oldfiels 80's albums are with vocals. "Songs Of The Distant Earth" from 1994 and "Voyager" from 1996 are really good. I think are albums are a must have for any instrumental music fans. Tangerine Dream : 100x better then Kraftwerk. They are really great. TD have more then 40 studio albums, 15 soundtracks and some live and best of albums. I like "Underwather Sunlight" and "Poland" most, but I like also all other albums which I have (15). Yanni : All his albums are really good. Most piano and Keyboards. Just can't wait to hear his new album. "Live At Acropolis" is really great. Check it out. However, at the same time, your Early Warnings section has completely ignored prog-rock band Dream Theater's visit to the House of Blues this coming Saturday (11/1). A damn shame 'cause this band should get a little more recognition for its technical prowess, skillful songwriting and ability to emote beyond self-depreciating behavior.
