I just signed up to the 'Jam mailing list yesterday and I have already received 6 issues! Don't you people sleep! Are you surgically attached to your computers! Just kidding. Its great to hear from other DT fans out there and the variety of viewpoints you have. I can hardly find anyone in my area that has ever heard of DT let alone appreciate their music. I'd like to express my views on Mike Portnoy's selection of drumsticks: First off, I don't think many people realize how controlled Mike is in his playing. Now I'm not saying that he doesn't cut loose and really hammer on his drums once in awhile(he's quite a showman!) but he's pretty much a light, -controlled- hitter. If you'll remember Mike use to use Hot Sticks. Now in my experience, these sticks are some of the easiest to break yet Mike used them for years. His current drumsticks are definitely a step up in strength. And it's not as if he's using a common stock Promark stick. It's his own model, basically a 5A with a beefed-up taper. I currently use Promark 5A's and have found them durable for such a light stick, but I don't consider myself a heavy hitter either. I noticed in his instructional video "Progressive Drum Concepts" how light Mike hits and also in the latest issue of "Modern Drummer"(with Mike on the cover!), he stated himself how he "does bash the drums"(page 61). But that's just my opinion and I certainly didn't want to step on anyone's toes! Just a side note, it's great to MP back on the cover of "Modern Drummer". It's been a four year wait but definitely worth it. Also a good article covering what went into the new album, FII. Check it out, December '97. Anyone going to the Nov. 19th show at Metropol, Pittsburgh, PA? This is a dream come true since I've missed the other times that DT toured through my area. I know, shame on me, but I never could swing my schedule to make the shows. Can anyone give me some help on finding DT imports and bootlegs? I checked out the bootleg list on the net but the one's that I tried to call were not current. Anyone selling quality CD's can get in touch with me. Your help is much appreciated!!! Oh well, got to go. I just received yet another Ytsejam! When I was in jr. high and high school, I was a wizard at algebra, trig, and calculus, but I hated English mainly for the literature side of it. Then I went to college and figured out that I love grammar. Now I'm a technical writing major and Asst. Editor for my school newspaper. Because of this, I think I'm more left-brained than right-brained. But I do think I have a decent appreciation for music, and I used to write poetry and musical pieces, so I must be a little of both. My opinion on the whole left brain/right brain debate is that some people are left-brained (analytical, mathematical, good at grammar), some are right-brained (artistic, love literature), and some are middle-brained (can do both). I would think that in order to write good lyrics, melodies, and technically accurate music, you have to be a little of both. Back to reading... There is a great restaurant downstairs, but you can't really wait inside until they open a certain door. This is because the stairs that lead to the ballroom aren't near the dining room exactly. About 100 people will be able to wait in a serpentine inside while the rest get lined up outside, so be prepared. There are basically three levels inside with the top two usually needing special tickets (they have opera booths overhanging the general floor) and there are three bars on the lower level. The best place to be is on the floor itself as you can see everything in a "cozy" space. If a mosh pit starts up, it may be a drag as the only real escape would be to get back to the raised floor portion in the back and on the sides where the viewing isn't as tasty. Anyway, you'll see! I love seeing bands here (Nuno, Groove Collective...missed Ratt last night ! :( ). Steve Amoco Corp. Tremendous fusion trio from Quebec, and like I said, Alain Caron is just an unbelievable bassist. More jazz than Wooten or Manring, but his ability is... limitless. Very Jaco influenced with the fretless, and his slap style is extremely clean and dextrous. He's gone solo since UZEB split in the early 90's, and the new stuff is even more jazz, from what I've heard. Only thing is, from what I've seen, their material is not available in the US. A friend of mine had ordered a few of their CDs through Audiophile, a jazz import company--I've never used them, but they have a great reputation. I was in Canada a few years back, and picked up World Tour '90, their double-live CD. This is the one to get. Brilliant. And as bass performances go, although his vocals pretty near ruin the album, Jeff Berlin's instrumental piece "Joe Frazier" in Bruford's Gradually Going Tornado has got to be one of the best. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Oct 1997 10:55:12 -0500 (EST) From: Krysten DeBroka To: email_address_removed Subject: *2* Chicago tickets for sale!
