I coulda banged off Met. pt I in 10 or 15. . DT just got to it first. . . ;) But I guess we haven't discussed this yet (should we really keep it going?).. . I can't say how long it takes to write a short pop song (heh. . some songs it just seems like they took someone elses song. .. that couldn't be too hard. . .), but I would imagine not as long as something like MetPtI. . . When I write, I tend to get an idea and go into a frenzy about it. . . and then set it aside for a little, then pick it up when a similar idea comes up, etc. . . but it must be a lot different in a band situation (in my old band, most of the writing was done by individuals. . . that kinda sucked.. ). Two other ideas, though . . DT does do some 'simple' type songs (PS is an example. . and I think 'Lie' is actually one of their easiest. . ). . does that take the same amount of time? Also, say a band with low musical talent writes a song. . but because they have low musical talent, doesn't it take them just as long to write an uncomplicated song? Sure, DT could bang off 'When I come Around' in one take, but maybe Green Day worked on it for hours. .. > "The Spider" just flat-out rocks, too bad it's only 2 minutes long. Dust that song is so beautiful. . . > significant radio play. (Kinda like Stairway To Heaven....great song, > although everyone on this earth has heard it six billion times.) As for I once heard that Stairway was the most played song on radio, ever. But I've always kind of doubted that. . . for one thing, it's eight minutes long. I've heard it a number of times on the radio, but _nobody_ plays eight minute songs anymore. . . I would have thought something else (I also heard something about the Rolling Stones' 'satisfaction' being one of the biggest songs ever, which I think is credible). Also, you hear some pseudo-punk pop song every 15 minutes when you listen to radio. . howcum they aren't the biggest? Reminds me of 'Baywatch' being the most popular show in the world. . . But I don't know anybody who watches Baywatch (or at least admits to it).. maybe I know the wrong people. . . > have to agree. I think the bass is probably 4/4, and the guitar and drum are 6/4. . . > em. ;) Green Day, meet Metropolis. (in response to someones post a long time ago, 5+7/8 would be one of the weirdest time sigs I've ever seen in a DT song. .. but LTL also has some really complicated transitions. Of course, Mahavishnu probably takes the cake for really odd stuff. . and they play at 900mph, so that doesn't help) > BTW, I'm a drummer (insert your own drummer joke here, ya fuckers ;) ) why are breaks between sets limited to 15 minutes? So you don't have to retrain the drummer.. . ;) > P.P.S. I'd totally love to do it.. I've recently gotten some MIDI setup (I recorded the 'Carol of the Bells' and it fuckin rocks), meager as it is, so I've been doing some stuff with that. But WAV files and MP3s can work as well. . . I'm away from my setup ar home, but I didn't neglect to bring a guitar, an amp, and an SM57 with me. .. Anyone else interested? I would seriously love to do it. . . it's been way too long since I've actually collaborated with anyone... > [Neil Peart] > (he can't write lyrics worth shit either, IMHO...) heh. . . this guy loves to post dangerously... my opinion (People reading this: Yay! He's gonna tell us what he thinks!), is that most of what he writes doesn't make a lot of sense, but when he hits it, he _really_ hits it... I love subdivisions, for example. And 'Time Stand Still' gets me every time.. (notice, I have no idea at the moment who wrote those lyrics, although I'm assuming it was Peart). However, this is exactly how I feel about Dream Theaters lyrics, so whatever. . . And BTW, what's up with the pronunciation? "peer"t? Was it Mike Bahr who posted that? No disrespect to Peart, but I like "pert" a lot better. . that's it. . . written too much lately. . hands gonna fall off.. figuratively, Rich ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Oct 1997 20:28:47 -0500 From: "Christopher R. In New York, for instance, whichever station is the classic rock station for a given year generally has a "Top 8 Billion Rock Songs Ever" thing once or twice a year, and Stairway is almost always #1. I can only remember one year that Stairway was #2, and I don't even remember what #1 was that year. (Might have been Clapton's "Tears in Heaven" - I think I remember that it was something that came out that year and was *huge*. In any event, Stairway was back on top the next year.) Whether it gets played a lot or not, it's the perennial #1 rock song ever in NYC. There is a station in Northeast Iowa that has been known as a station that only plays "popular" rock and roll. I was listening today at work and heared something I couldn't believe. They were playing commercials for songs to be heared in their fall lineup. Most of these bands have been similar to Matchbox 20, etc., but today they played an except of DT's "Burning My Soul". I don't know where things currently stand between Finneus Gauge and him, but I've been told that the copyright infringement thing wasn't totally his fault. I still wouldn't trust him if I were in some unknown up-and-coming band and he promised me the world. Maybe things will be different if he actually gets DT, FW, and Fish to play. You know, what Renfro COULD have done is say "look, i fucked up" and i'm sure all would have been forgiven (at least, that's the idea i get from speaking to the finneus troupe about it). The only reason Renfro is IN the progday thing is (sadly enough) one reason: himself. This is the same guy who still holds the '95 ProgDay CD as HIS PROPERTY TO SELL, although he refuses to give Echolyn (or any other band, for that matter) copywright money for their "contribution" on his CD. * * * * * * * e-mail: email_address_removed / email_address_removed erotomania!: http://www.mindspring.com/~syrinx/ offical lemur voice homepage: http://www.mindspring.com/~syrinx/lemur.htm (c) 1997 Happy Fun Ball, Inc. For me, it's not so much the fact that the meter changes. It's the fact that here's a tool that the average band can't/won't/doesn't know how/is afraid to use, that Rush/DT/whomever sprinkles around like... well, sprinkles, that really ought to totally fuck up the way you tap your foot to the song, and *doesn't*.
