You can wait inside. There is valet bit pricey though don't remember exact amount Resteraunt is on the main floor. You go upstairs for all of the shows. I've seen The Jason Bonham Band & Denis Leary there. If memory serves correctly there are 3 floors upstairs and the 2nd and 3rd look down at the stage. They didn't open the upper levels for Bonham. When they say standing room only they mean it. There are seriously like 4 stools in the entire place. The sound was fucked up for JBB - bad mix. I'm hopeing DT's will be better! I mean, I'm >under the impression that everything since then has been more >compilations, which kind of pissed me off as it looks like he's just >cashing in on older music. But I think Phil mentioned something about >Yanni's newer releases being mostly piano works (but is it *new* music)? Okay, here's the story on his releases, start to finish (I'm going to ignore for the time being the soundtracks he's done, like "Polar Shift"). Side note: Yanni was a guitarist and keyboardist in a rock band before becoming a solo artist, for those who think he and rock are mutually exclusive. Yanni-haters, there's the PgDn key. Use it, don't complain. 1980: "Optimystique." All new music. Rereleased in 1989 as it was becoming hard to find. Yanni has resisted the temptation to rerecord or update the music as it has a sound that, to him, is very representative of that period of his career. 1986: "Keys to Imagination". All new music. Recorded entirely on keyboards. 1987: "Out of Silence". All new music. Recorded entirely on keyboards. 1988: "Chameleon Days". All new music. Recorded entirely on keyboards. 1989: "Niki Nana". All new music. Recorded mostly on keyboards but with some orchestration. 1990: "Reflections of Passion". Compilation album. 4 songs from "Out of Silence," 1 from "Keys to Imagination," 4 from "Chameleon Days," 2 from "Niki Nana," and 1 from "Optimystique." The other three songs were new, recorded for this album. 1991: "In Celebration of Life". Compilation album. 3 songs from "Keys to Imagination," 2 from "Chameleon Days," 3 from "Out of Silence," 1 from "Niki Nana," and one from the soundtrack "Polar Shift." 1992: "Dare to Dream". All new music. "Aria" was nominated for a Grammy. 1993: "In My Time". All new music but for 1 song, most of it quiet piano pieces, several with violins and other strings. Includes a new recording of "Felitsa" from "Dare to Dream." 1994: "Live at the Acropolis". Live performance, fully orchestrated. A compilation, obviously, with 3 tunes from "Keys to Imagination," 3 from "Out of Silence," 3 from "Chameleon Days," and 2 from "In My Time." The video version also included 2 additional songs from "In My Time," 1 from "Dare to Dream," and 1 additional song from "Chameleon Days." 1997: "In The Mirror". Compilation album. 1 song from "Out of Silence," 1 from "Chameleon Days," 1 from "Niki Nana," 5 from "In My Time," 4 from "Dare to Dream," and 1 new tune. Also includes a special radio edit of the "Live at the Acropolis" performance of "Aria," previously available only on the video version. 1997: "Devotion". Compilation album. 1 tune from "Out of Silence," 1 from the soundtrack "Polar Shift," 2 from "Chameleon Days," 5 from "Dare to Dream," and 3 from "In My Time." Also includes the "Live at the Acropolis" performances of "Marching Season" and "The End of August," previously only available on the video version. 1997: "Port of Mystery". A compilation disc with 4 tunes from "Optimystique," 1 from "Out of Silence," 1 from "Dare to Dream," and 2 from "Keys to Imagination." For neophytes, I'd advise picking up "Live at the Acropolis" first. It's very representative of all his different styles. After that, try "Keys to Imagination," "Out of Silence," and "Chameleon Days," (they are all so good I can't recommend one over the other). After that, try "Dare to Dream" and "In My Time." "Reflections of Passion", "In the Mirror," "In Celebration of Life," and "Devotion" can be skipped unless you're 1) a serious Yanni fanatic who has to have all the discs (like me), or 2) a cautious Yanni fan who wants to start with a different compilation disc than "Live at the Acropolis." That's Yanni's previous work. From what little I've been able to glean, his new release (working title: "Tribute") will be out hopefully before the end of the year. The working song titles I've heard so far include "Deliverance" and "Nightingale". This disc will be all new music, hopefully orchestrated like the "Acropolis" stuff. There's also rumors of a huge upcoming performance to be filmed and released on PBS a la "Live at the Acropolis." Yanni fans, keep in touch with me and I'll let you know. Personally I feel that Portnoys Well, what if (gotta think here. . .oo. . okay) the Rolling Stones made a Tribute album to The Beatles? Yes, I know the Beatles are gone, but lets assume for our purposes that a huge band records a tribute album for another huge band? It wouldn't be for making money, it would be for honoring someone who was a huge influence on you, and showing respect by interpreting a song the way it is to you. The fact that most of the bands on the Rush tribute album are barely out of the Garage shows that most bands influenced by Rush aren't in the mainstream. Who would you get on a tribute to Rush? The way I view the Rush tribute is a bunch of people getting together, and deciding to honor their influences. For example (keep in mind this is all opinion), I would listen to "Analog Kid" and "Closer to the Heart" from the tribute over the Rush versions anyday... Portnoys drumming is, as always, beautiful, but I was also impressed by Dean Castronovo (also of Steve Vai fame). . I've heard a lot of opinions on him (for example, someone I met at Birch Hill in 96 hated the way he sped up YYZ. . .), but I personally think he's great.. . > have to disagree. If I can now dominate those bands (and arguably I can (in some ways, I know it's subjective)), can I not do a tribute to them? Didn't work with Echolyn for me though. I dunno. I keep listening to As The World, but it still hasn't grown on me. It seems like they never stop playing seven chords, and the vocal harmonies always sound really flat and unimaginative to me. Yes, Gentle Giant, and Phish (and now Spock's Beard--check out "Thoughts"!) are really good at that, but Echolyn just isn't, IMHO. Vince LuPone asked about the sound on FII...I hate that snare sound. Somebody called it a Pringles can....very descriptive. Sort of like Alan White's sound on Tales From Topographic Oceans....too much of a thud...and Metallica touring with DT? I dunno, if it ever happened I'm not sure I'd stay to see Metallica...although they're still supposed to be a decent live band. ]From 3169-- Luke....not to beat it into the ground or anything (LOL)...I liked you post. Great analogy about the car. The last thing I'm gonna say about this--any band can do emotion. (Green Day can evoke an emotional response in some people.) NOT any band can do intellect. (Green Day cannot evoke an intellectual, cerebral response. It's all visceral.) Any schmuck with three weeks' training on guitar can play a pretty lil chord progression that can make *somebody* cry, but it won't be very profound. *That's* why I listen to DT and not Green Day. (Btw, Ptacek--a two-year-old and Bach are not equivalent, unless you also think that everything is equivalent...as in total subjectivism...in other words, since everyone's opinion is just as valid as anyone else's, the super-snobby hyper-elitist opinion that Nirvana sucks because they can't play in 5/16 is just as valid as yours is. Food for thought.) ]From 3170-- Maybe the Jammers can get together and compose a new book for the Bible, kinda like in Monty Python and the Holy Grail...the members of OFB would be the deities, and the Jammers are the angels (ROTFLMAO!!)...."yea, D-Man shall smite the average dickheads with his mighty FAQ, bright as ten thousand suns..." (Does Skadz count as a member of the band? LOL Where'd he go anyway? He posted to ten jams in a row then disappeared....maybe he went on vacation...OH SHIT! The Jam's going to crash again, and we'll all be unsubbed...NOOOOO!! Maybe that can be our new book of Revelations...hehehe Okay, I haven't had enough sleep lately.) To Jeremy K....are you telling me MP would go through at least one pair of sticks PER NIGHT?!? Jesus...I mean, if he's using the super thin jazzy type sticks, maybe, but if he's using the Vinnie Paul telephone pole models, no way! ]From 3171-- J. Marshaleck--PMU is based on Hamlet. JL is singing "o that this too too soild flesh would melt" at the end, and once he gets to melt, the song cuts off there. That was deliberate. Hamlet deals with suicide a lot ("to be or not to be," etc.)....does that help? ]From 3172-- Kirk Hammett's birthday is 11/18? Dude, I dunno where you live, but that is weird. Stairway is ALWAYS on a radio station, somewhere in the world. Most people love the song to death--it's a great damn song!--but it's kinda like Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen....the first time I heard it I was like wow! This rocks! But after Wayne's World, it was on all the time...they did that with Van Halen's Right Now too....jeez....I hate that. One last bit of tid.... Kevmo:Derek::Tony Kaye:Rick Wakeman? Nah, he's just a bitter old man.... :) all i have to say is, Get Over It! The tribute was just that, a TRIBUTE. A few talented musicians decided to get together and pay homage to a group they have looked up to for so long. They didn't do it as a get rich quick scheme...do you honestly think that they had planned to hit the Top of the charts with this one? it wasn't even available in most stores... many FANS didn't even know it existed....
