Both of the shows were phenomenal, I must say, and I was very happy that Ohio was graced with two shows, but last night, everything was so synchronized. I was so surprised and glad to see that much of the crowd was made of college students..I didn't think that many students were into the band! (but they are, as I can attest to all the "on-pitch" singing in Pull Me Under) Hollow years replaced Take away my pain (and according to the setlist, this is the piece they choose from night to night..) and it was so cool to see JP on a double neck guitar for HY! (ah, be still my heart!) Be sure to check out Derek's corner of the stage throughout the show...also, not only does Myung grace the show with many great solos, but he plays some chapman stick! Portnoy graces the show with a phenomenal solo, though it's a bit short to me...(but he acts up during the whole show, so you have many opportunites to see him fooling around!) What can I say about the songs, they are so great, and the band is so tight when they play- even when Portnoy led the band (at the Cleveland show) in a few lines of U2's "Discotheque" during the final encore! The guys were really nice to meet and are really friendly, and patient to talk to the fans and sign all those millions of memorabila, and James mentioned to me that there may be a '98 tour as well. (he mentioned visiting "bigger" venues in 1998!!) All I can say is- if Dream Theater isn't visiting your state- MOVE! Message-ID: Matt- First, about BLS. I listened to it in a Disc-go-round. I knew who was on it, and I knew who they were and have heard their stuff before. I remember Magna Carta toting themselves as the "future of Progressive Rock" (remember the Prog Frog?), so I kind of went in with a few pre conceived notions. I knew there were no vocals, and I knew the songs were all written and recorded in 4 days and what not. Still, after listening to a few minutes of each song, at least for me, there was nothing memorable and that interesting. I guess it could just be me. I am interested in the new project with Sean Reinert: Drums Trey Gunn: Warr Guitar/Producer Adam Levy: Guitar Ron Jarzombek: Guitar Guest: John Myung: Stick This should be incredible. You all know Reinert from Cynic (hey Shawn, thanks for the update!). Who out there remembers Jarzombek from Watchtower? I'm listening to Control and Resistance right now, and I am having trouble understanding it (again) but It's awesome. What has Ron been up to lately? Trey is from King Crimson, right? What is this project going to be released on? I do know what you mean by the two month rack. Voivod's "The Outer Limits," Cairo "Cairo," Pantera's "Trendkill." I just can't afford to have the two week rack. _____________________________________________________ "So you tell me you trust me, I can trust you as far as I can throw you." -Dream Theater _____________________________________________________ Ryan Good - Music Stapher from WSUM - Madison's idea of College Radio! - The Unofficial-Official Madison Progressive Rock Monster Home - 608-285-8695 Radio - 608-262-1206 "Madison Student Radio: It's coming!" I've tried and tried and tried... but it looks grim for anyone needing extra tickets for the show. The only hope would seem to be getting tickets from scalpers in front of the venue. That's not as tough as some of you think (DON'T pay them $100!)... a lot of times people come to the shows and have friends cancel on them, so they need to sell off extras. All of the ticket resellers I've spoken to have said that beyond the first batch of tickets they got (which they sold immediately when the concert sold out) they have been utterly unable to get any spares. There's still a slight chance I may be able to get some, but I don't know. Also, the less corrections he has to tell me, the better. As to keeping the dates straight, I'm doing my best! :) One other thing: to anyone who wants to attend the Madison WI show (Nov 18) - make sure you contact the Barrymore TheatRE (their spelling) in regards to getting tix. I called TicketBlaster in regards to getting tix and they were not aware of the show. I called the Barrymore and tix are on sale, so you need to order them from the venue itself. I don't have the phone number on me now but I'll try to remember to post it later (or someone from Madison could). Lastly, anyone living in Madison, can ya give me specific/detailed instructions to the Barrymore from Milwaukee? I know how to get to the Dane County Coliseum, but that's it. Thanx in advance. It probably won't ever happen, though. Why not? Feel free to post some answers to this question. I think it's an interesting one. For what it's worth, I have a few ideas, myself. 1) Metallica has changed its image to be more "current" or "alternative" or "accessible" or "commercial" and wouldn't want a prog metal band (like DT, Fates, etc) to damage their "New" (read LAME) image. 2) Metallica wouldn't want to be embarrassed by touring with a band which can play circles around them like Dream Theater. My Three Moons, he plays three bases simultaneously--just 'cuz he can, basically. He had written an earlier song using two, and someone apparently had said to him, wow, pretty cool, but you could *never* do three. Oh well. Outside of THONK, though, his stuff is all new-age, really. I mean, it's great music still, but not at all the "chamber-thrash" of THONK. I'm only bringing that up as warning, basically, because if fans of Skolnick, Morse, and Herb read this, they won't find these guys (or anything remotely resembling them) on any of Manring's other albums. Best bass player out there, eh? :-) Well, not gonna get into a long debate here, but I think one could make the case that Alain Caron (UZEB) and Victor Wooten (Bela Fleck & the Flecktones) are in his class, in terms of versatility, dexterity, creativity, slap style, and just about anything else (except for maybe the most-basses-at-one-time thing). I count myself way lucky to have gotten interested in Yanni the way I did. See, this all happened back in late November 1992, before I was a DT fan (which began in February '93), when I was hanging out with these chicks down the hall in my dorm, and one of them was playing some music. Now, I wasn't really paying attention to the music but it caught my ear and I was like, "Hey, this cool. What is it?" and the one playing it said it was Yanni "Dare To Dream". Yanni? Who's that? I had never heard of the guy, nor the associated cheese that some people think his music is made of, and I was totally digging that album. That weekend I rushed out and picked it up. I have since purchased his entire CD catalog (except for the compliations). So there was I listening to "Dare To Dream" 24-7, and I'd play the thing at the recording studio at school, and in the maintenance room where some of us would hang out. You'd be surprised how many people asked "Wow, what is this? This is cool." Yanni. It's Yanni. Dig it. Now, what's the word (Phil?) on his post-Acropolis releases? I mean, I'm under the impression that everything since then has been more compilations, which kind of pissed me off as it looks like he's just cashing in on older music. But I think Phil mentioned something about Yanni's newer releases being mostly piano works (but is it *new* music)? Dammit, I should've brought some of his stuff with me to work today. I guess I'll have to wait till later.
