Dude, you can't say that 'NV43345' wasn't worth the $9 that I paid for it. Even if everthing else on the album sucked ass (which a lot of it did), that piece alone was worth the price of admission. Anyone know if there's any sheet music for it out there? On the line of bass players, I know I've mentioned him before, but you all MUST go out and get 'Thonk' by Michael Manring. He's simply the BEST bass player out there, bar none. (Madsman will disagree with me on that statement, but.... :) He plays in a band called SadHappy now, which I haven't heard, but his previous stuff (especially the aforementioned album with Alex Skolnick, Steve Morse, Tim Alexander and others...) is just phenomenal. Hell, send me a blank tape and I'll copy the album for you!! Uh oh... that might not have been the best thing for me to say, now that I think of it.... > > Brain fart, what's OFB? I was under the impression that Yanni was very respected by the majority of this list. I know why it's easy to rip on John Tesh, simply because he was much more known to the world because of his stint with Entertainment Tonight. His quitting ET to spend full time on his music career was national news, so he was an easy target for the "horrible horrible music" jokes. Although I'm not very exposed to Tesh's music, I got into Yanni about 4 years ago, when my roommate (who happened to be the other guitarist in my band) brought home a Yanni album. I loved it. It was the perfect complement to Images and Words, incorporating many different time signatures, and many, many instruments. I would think that any Dream Theater fan would enjoy Yanni, provided they actually get past the label of "new age" and give it a chance. The same is probably true for Tesh, although I have yet to give him a try. KAI ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Oct 1997 10:40:51 -0500 From: "Christopher R. The new Ozric Tentacles CD is called _Curious Corn_. It has already been released in Europe on the Mad Fish Label, and will be released in the U.S. on Dec. 9th (DNA Distribution). CDNow is supposed to be taking orders as of today (Oct. 29th). www.cdnow.com Mike Werning has a great Ozric Tentacle page with .RA clips from the new CD, as well as video clips, MIDI files, photos and interviews with the band. If you are new to the Tentacles, this would be a great place to find out if you like their music. Address is http://www.execpc.com/%7Emwerning/ Another good source for information on OT and other similar bands is the newsgroup alt.music.spacerock. I'm glad to hear that other people are into OT's music. It's nothing like DT, other than the virtuosity of the musicians. Very spacey jams, killer keyboard patches (sounds), polyrhythmic drumming, haunting flute (yes, flute, like Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull!)...all make for some really unique music. Message-ID: Hi people! This is Michael - a new member of the DT mailing list. I'm living in Poland, so my English won't be fluent. I don't know, what I can tell you about me. The most important thing is, that I'm a DT fan. DT isn't a famous band in my country, so I don't have any contacts with any other fans. The same situation is with Fates Warning. The CD's are not available in our music shops, so I had to order them from Germany. The progressive music(metal) is not very popular in Poland. Althought, I found the CD of LEMUR VOICE (sorry, but I don't remember the title of this). This is the music, like DT plays. This is an only one european band, which is playing that beautiful music like DT. Do you know this band? I see, that there is many informations about gigs in US on list. Does anybody know anythig about tournee of DT in Europe? I hope so. I'm dreaming about DT gig in Warsaw, but this is impossible, because only a few hundred people know, what DT is. If anybody can send me two parts of interview with James LaBrie. I've got only the third (last) part of this. This is all from me at this time, and I'm waiting for answers from you. Bye!!! Michael. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Oct 1997 11:43:43 -0500 (EST) From: Phil Carter To: A Ytse Beside Itself Subject: More on Yanni Message-ID: Greetings ye 'jamanoids... Anyhoo, i guess the problem is that most ppl relate > Yanni to 'soft instrumental piano pieces', but he actually has a lot of > upbeat songs with very prog-like beats. I seriously recommend the Live at > the Acropolis CD. It kicks some serious ass. And that violinist rocks. Actually, Yanni's latest works have been more of the softer piano pieces (listen to "In My Time" or "Dare to Dream"; the new pieces are almost exclusively piano pieces). The earlier stuff is very upbeat and (dare I say it?) progressive, though it is, like Ernesto mentioned, less high-quality in sound than the Acropolis disc is. I think the problem was that when Yanni was recording most of his earlier work, the technology just wasn't there for the kind of sound he was envisioning. That's why he was so happy with the Acropolis concert -- it was one of his dreams not only to play at the Parthenon, back in Greece again, but with an orchestra that could help him bring the music to life the way he imagined it. The music does sound better when an orchestra backs it, that's true, but the keyboard-only stuff still kicks in its own way. If you loved the synth-era music of the 80's, then you'll probably love the studio discs too.
