I mean just listen to the radio for a little bit and you'll hear those same old chord porgression popping up again and again... different tempos maybe... but the same song nonetheless. This may explain why we have this recent phenomenon with songs that are nothing more than old songs looped in the background while some guy raps over the top of it. I certainly hope that this doesn't continue for much longer even though I fear it will.. much like using dead celebrities to sell everything from cd's to coffee mugs. Schoenberg requires serious work, both to write and to perform. Everclear does not. OFB probably worked pretty damn hard on some things, right? ACOS, the Metropolis bridge...how long do you think it took Hanson to come up with MMMBop? Ten minutes? Regarding Kansas....I realize this is reaching back a bit, and I don't remember exactly what was said or by whom. But I do like Point Of Know Return, although to me it's not as good as Masque or Song For America. "The Spider" just flat-out rocks, too bad it's only 2 minutes long. Dust in the Wind" is absolutely gorgeous, even though it's still getting significant radio play. (Kinda like Stairway To Heaven....great song, although everyone on this earth has heard it six billion times.) As for Monolith, I never could get into that album. (My dad has some of these things on vinyl....whoa!) How My Soul is like early speed metal just about...if only the parts where the music stopped weren't in there. Stay Out Of Trouble was pretty groovy, as I recall....that's about as catchy as a song should ever get. Somebody said Kansas was probably a really huge influence on OFB. I'd have to agree. Personally, seems to me that Take The Time is very-Kansas like, particularly the very beginning--the swirly sound in the keys with the strange tattoo over it (what time sig is that, anybody know? Just curious.) Innocence Faded also sounds a bit like Kansas to me. (Wouldn't it be somethin if DT added a violinist? Wowie!) Spock's Beard also sounds quite a bit like Kansas. Echolyn's got some of that, too, but Echolyn uses those damn block chords constantly....kinda annoying. I never really did get into them. Also, I dunno if anybody replied to this or not...Skadz: the MP/JP/Rudess/Levin project has been renamed The Liquid Tension Experiment. I have no idea when it'll be released, sometime in summer '98 I think. > Bwahahahaha... another victim. Don't worry, Jammers, I've, uh, sent > this person the requested information. :) D-Man, defender of civilization. ;) Rich said a variety of things in #3164 that were worth responding to...but I don't want to have a post that's a gig long. Go back and read em. ;) Green Day, meet Metropolis. OOOPS, watch it...the time changed...um, there it goes again...oh hey, watch that fill, it's tricky...oh, oh, god, it'd be like watching the Hindenburg crash. >:) I'm sorry, but I have to relate one story about people being idiots: one day this lady was in the store, and her obnoxious little rugrat was running down the aisles, pushing the tags out of place. One of our cashiers asked the kid in a *Very* polite manner (I would have strangled, no questions asked) to stop. (We'd just gottn thru moving every goddamned thing in the store, and all of our customers were complaining cuz their fuckin laxatives weren't in the same place they always were.) The lady COMPLAINED to the manager about the poor cashier....I nearly slashed the lady's tires. DUH. BTW, I'm a drummer (insert your own drummer joke here, ya fuckers ;) ) so I have no idea how to read tab. I've tried to learn a couple times, actually, but it's a lost cause. Besides, my fingers are too damn short to actually be able to play geetar respectably anyway. (That's actually a bonus for drummers, btw. Easier to handle the sticks.) Literally, Nealus the Inscrutable =) P.S. To the Jammer who said he didn't like Pro Mark sticks...I like em, actually. I happen to prefer Firth and Zildjian (5Bs...nice and thin....my teacher gave me a frickin set of marching sticks to practice with on set last month....I swear, they're bigger around than most telephone poles...yikes) but PM ain't bad. Actually, I had the Zildjians ALWAYS split on me...right along the grain, towards the top of the head, after maybe three days of playing...makes me think it's a manufacturing thing. If they didn't break in the first week, they'd last a long time though. P.P.S. Rich, your idea about writing a piece of music over the web sounds like serious fun...I've got some really wild ideas sitting around that I haven't been able to do anything with (such as basing a composition on Pascal's Triangle....) that might actually work... P.P.P.S. I dunno what's up with Neil Peart saying that bullshit about the Rush tribute album. The fucker can play, but he's not a great PR guy (he can't write lyrics worth shit either, IMHO...) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Oct 1997 00:05:57 -0500 (EST) From: Richard Banister To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Left/right Message-ID: ]From Rogerio: > Please, understand that people have different opinions and that > you have to respect their right to state what they think, even if you > don't agree with their point. I guess an orchestra can make a hell of a difference. Anyhoo, i guess the problem is that most ppl relate Yanni to 'soft instrumental piano pieces', but he actually has a lot of upbeat songs with very prog-like beats. I seriously recommend the Live at the Acropolis CD. It kicks some serious ass. And that violinist rocks. I do have one reserve about Yanni, though....his moustache. ewwwwww. We are scheduled to start recording in March of 1998 in Florida. I'm also looking forward to a couple spots on the upcoming CDs of Spiral Architect and Clockwork, to excellent bands in my opinion. Last but not least is the ongoing labor of love, Ever. (reinert, snelwar, and Ytse's very own Christian Schulze). Vocals are nearly complete, mixing around the corner. (How many times have I said that? You see, never trust a bass player.) I should have my very own website up and running pretty soon which will have all the updates for this stuff, and the several other projects going on.
