Kicked ass. > Lots of great author mentions today - are we feeling literary? :) I'd like to take this opportunity to HIGHLY recommend _Infinite Jest_ by David Foster Wallace. It's literally the prog rock of literary fiction (where, you could say, pop fiction authors like John Grisham and Steven King would be like mass-produced MTV bands -- sell millions, but are very unchallenging). Here's why it's like progressive: _IJ_ is inhumanly complex, visionary, cutting-edge, insanely fun, and LONG (981 pages, plus almost 100 pages of footnotes [yes, footnotes in fiction!]) -- but also hilariously funny, so I guess you could call it the Mr. Bungle of the literary scene. Kind of like Douglas Adams with a tripled IQ and a crack-smoking style of syntax and narrative structure. A fanfuckingtastic read, one of the most brilliant novels I've ever read. Truly pushes the boundaries of fiction; much like prog pushes the boundaries of music. I highly recommend it to anyone who's up to the task. A book like _IJ_ is really something that will easily separate the intelligentsia from the idiots. (Apologies to all idiots.) > this is a newsletter for the obsessed!!!!! It was probably DT's low-budget response to Metallica's little staged tech disaster from last year's tour. They couldn't afford explosions and stunt roadies, so they just sort of lit up a spotlight. =) I look forward to the day when DT is popular enough to have the money to incorprate pyros into their stage shows. Nothing is fucking cooler (word choice notwithstanding) than onstage flame effects. (Of course, they'd have to be playing venues bigger than the clubs unless they want to fricassee their fan base.) > What the hell happened with my DT mail list . A lot of people think that because they are clean-cut, good-looking, religious/spiritual, and very much into being gentle and pleasant toward other people, they must automatically suck. Why else? Well, their music gets little airplay, but their live performances tend to get *lots* of play on PBS, which tends to show programs aimed at, shall we say, the intellectually snooty. "Masterpiece Theatre" and all that. I happen to like PBS and its programming (it was how I discovered Yanni, as a matter of fact -- "Live at the Acropolis" was played nearly nonstop for a couple weeks in a row about four years back), but those who look down on PBS will probably look down on Yanni and Tesh, too, by association. Their music, on the other hand -- I don't see why people hate them based on their music. It's uplifting, it's catchy, it's well-composed, and it sounds fantastic in concert. Now this is probably old news around here, but he talks about Neil Part slagging on the Rush tribute effort by saying that "a bunch of bar bands are trying to make a buck off of our name." Now, this pissed me off. In my opinion, Portnoy, and most of the other players on that disc, blow their counterparts in Rush clear off the fucking stage. The only reason Rush plays stadiums instead of clubs is that rather than writing songs like 2112 all the time, they went to the Tom Sawyer motif. Now, don't get me wrong. I like their "poppier" songs better than the out-there ones, but the point is that they basically made a conscious decision at some point to write music to satisfy the public (I won't use the words sell-out) - so how does that make them any better than, say, Dream Theater? Anyway. I just needed to get that off my chest. Now I see why Peart has a reputatin for being an asshole. Part of it was filling out a short survey, and I will never > forget the comment from one high school student: "I only like songs I > know." This, to me, sums up why much of the public goes for Top 40 music. > It doesn't challenge them. It's lowest common denominator entertainment, > like much of TV and bestselling books (for those that still bother to read > books, anyway). Just some of my thoughts. I have also witnessed this phenomenon. When I first went to college, my younger brother and sister would protest any time I played a song which was not in current rotation on Top 40 radio. When I asked them what was wrong with the music I was playing, the response was always along the lines of "I've never even heard that song before", or "I want to listen to something I have actually heard before". I tried to explain to them that if you only liked music you have already heard, you wouldn't like any songs. For every song that you think is cool now, there was a time when you hadn't yet heard it. But, this argument seemed to be over their heads. My brother and sister have both matured since then, and are more open-minded about music than they used to be. Still, I think there are many people who just aren't all that concerned about music, and are willing to accept whatever they hear on the radio, because that's the easiest thing to do. Then there are a few people out there who take a great interest in music. These are the people who will take the trouble to look past what's popular to find what they like. I'm not trying to put anyone down in saying this. It's really a question of where your interests lie. One of my greatest interests is music, therefore I constantly seek out new music to listen to. I base my listening habits on what I like, rather than on what gets played on the radio. On the other hand, I'm not a huge movie buff. I would rather see a bad movie that makes me laugh than see most movies that are nominated for Academy Awards. So am I any better than a person who is into movies just as much as I'm into music, but who listens to whatever song get played on the radio? I think not. Our interests just lie in different areas. -Paul ---------------- Paul Humm email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Oct 1997 20:02:11 -0500 From: YtseJim To: email_address_removed Subject: Full Set List? Well, from personal experience (I have studied a few foreign languages extensively for the last 7 years) the native ability (in adults, that is) for the two subjects are not too related. I never did well in math. Sure, regular addition, subtraction, multiplication and division (hi, mike) are easy, but that advanced math shit blew me away. I may be the only person to hold a BA without ever taking a math class (Thank god for Geology and Computer Science class!), yet I am quite adept at the foreign language thing. My verbal scores (in English) rule (pat, pat on my back. Is that my arm breaking?) I am actually quite disappointed by Mike's endorsement of the Promark company. I bet they approached him and he didn't approach them. The Promark drumsticks are shit. They don't last. I used to use them until I discovered Vic Firth. Much better. My Vic Firth sticks are the same pair that I have had for over a year and a half (honestly) I play quite a bit too.
