Ellison does not suffer fools gladly, or at all. :) I believe this first appeared one of his newspaper columns in the 70's - the LA Times, I think. I remember reading it in "The Harlan Ellison Hornbook", which is a collection of his columns and various other essays. Ellison may just be the greatest writer alive right now. He definitely does not suffer fools at all - and generally has no problem with pointing them out for all to see. Since I'm very busy right now (noticed that I haven't been posting to the 'jam as often as I used to?), I just kept the messages to be answered later (you know, school, studies etc). But I'm a complete idiot and deleted my own mailfile. All the important messages that I had were gone, unfortunately. So, if you sent me any messages on the past 15 days, and have not received anything from me, please e-mail me again on . BTW, now that I have a CD burner and I've been receiving many requests for trades for my "Holy Land in the East" (it is a 2CD set), I think that I'll duplicate it (a la Mike Bahr). I'm not sure I agree with all of it - I think the generalization is too broad. There are too many factors and variables not taken into account. For example, many musicians like myself get a cheap thrill out of complex, difficult-to-play musical passages. This does not preclude the songwriting or emotion evident in the music, but can strongly enhance the effect it has on the listener (me). Take this concept to the extreme and you have people who will *only* listen to music that is extremely complicated and difficult to play. I think that at this extreme the listener has strayed completely from your emotive theory of listening and into a more analytical and almost dispassionate listening mode. Taken to less of an extreme, I think this analytical listening style can be one *facet* of the way a person approaches music. I believe that my listening tastes reflect many different influences, including a raw emotional response, an "emotionally removed" objective scrutiny, perhaps another level at which a particularly crafted note or melody just hits you at a basic level beneath the sensation of emotion and way beneath the high level cognitive reasoning. Anyway, those are my brief thoughts in response to Brian's thoughtful post. later, -Neil. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Oct 1997 10:49:05 -0700 From: "James Garrett" To: email_address_removed Subject: Los Angeles/Kevin/Fates Message-ID: Hey Jammers, A couple of questions: 1) DT will be in Santa Anna on Nov 9th and Hollywood Nov 11th. Since they'll be in LA, is there any word about a surprise appearance on the 10th? Maybe an acoustic record store jam like up in Toronto. Of course it would be pretty cool to hang out with the guys for a night of Monday Night Football! I know that they deserve a day to rest, but it'd be cool. 2) What are the possibilities of Kevin Moore making a guest appearance at one of the LA shows? Actually, I have never listened to his stuff, so I really can't comment :) As for Yanni, he is an amazing player, I really need to remember to go out and get some of his stuff. If any of you say you don't like Yanni, you probably don't like DT much, since alot of his stuff has similarities to DT's music. Uh, no. They don't *think* it sounds good! It DOES sound good, to them. I'll exclude the masochists for a moment, and only concentrate on those people that actually listen to music for pleasure :) They enjoy the vibrations that the actual sounds make. They even enjoy it so much, that it sometimes moves them to dance ;) They're not looking for musical 'enlightenment', whatever the fuck that is... Just because someone else (the infamous someone else, never me :), who thinks they have the one and only definition of "quality music," doesn't think the music is worthy of their respect matters no on iota! Whether it's repetitive or not has absolutely no bearing on THEIR enjoyment. Why is this so hard to understand? This thread is growing old. Succeeded at what?! I could give a shit whether they get popular or not! As long as they're still around :) I don't care if JP does guitar tracks for Luvs' Baby Soft Diapers. It's all about the music. So someone wants them to get popular? Great!!!! So heroin-addicted, pregnant, moronic, homeless people will listen to DT. Great!!!! Won't affect my enjoyment of them :) People have to stop getting all hung up on this "The Popular Music Machine MUST DIE!" thing. It's been around forever and it ain't goin' anywhere. It's nice to be able to find a scapegoat for what's wrong, but I'd rather channel my energy towards DT! Live and let live! <-- Gee, that's such a SIMPLE sentence :) Mike: > I always found there to be quite a bit of similarity between OFB and > Kansas. The heavy guitar playing with keys certainly helps that > comparison, but I have also found a similar type of melody to be > involved in the songs. (Does that make sense? It's early yet :) ) Perfect sense! Are you a musician? :) You hit the nail on the guitar playing for me anyways... Man, did it hit me today on the ride into work... I was listening to ACOS and there is so much Kansas in there around the instrumental section in the middle. And it's all mixed in so well with trademark DT.
