Or so he says. C'mon, Skadz, we all know you were there in the front row for the Red Rocks concert! I saw you! :) Seriously, Tesh is slagged more than any musician I can think of (besides Yanni, whom I also happen to love), and for less reason. Bottom line, though, is if you don't care for his work -- don't listen to it! :) KAI, I'm still working on a list of reasons you should listen to Joe Satriani, by the way. I can't remember which of Ellison's works it comes from, though, but read any of his work and you'll understand why it's most often attributed to him. However, I don't think you got my original point, which is one I don't think too many people really think about much. That is that from a *purely musical* standpoint, DT beats the living bejeezus out of, say, Green Day. Stick those poor bastards in the middle of Metropolis, ACOS, or Light Fuse and they are *fucked*. They'll have no idea how to play that stuff, whereas OFB could play any Green Day song they damn well pleased and may actually do a better job of it. ;) Essentially, what I'm saying is that since Green Day, et al, actually does mean something to somebody else, I respect that. I've lived and learned in that regard; pointing out the obvious ("um, are they ever going to change chords?") doesn't help. (The grocery store parallels are great..."no no, we don't carry plutonium...") Seriously, since some people get something out of Tupac, I see it as just as valid *IN THAT SENSE* (not yelling, just trying to make sure you see it) as OFB. However, I do get to claim the technical high ground =) Sort of like the moral high ground, except it's more fun. Does that make sense? >Neal, you're the man. What can I say? There will be no autographs and no flash pictures, please. =P I'm going to go ahead and risk an FAQ here...DT had better come to St. Looie in 98...they were gonna be here ON MY BIRTHDAY but NOOOOO...they had to play Wisconsin instead!! ;) Anyway, since Richie Rich also asked about musical analysis, I'm going to go OD on DT =P and see if I can find something I completely get lost with...should take, oh, bout 10 minutes...hehehehe. Actually, a question for the Mad Tabber--for those of us who are guitar tab-illiterate (shameless heathens are people too!) but not musically illiterate, would it be humanly possible for you to translate that stuff into standard notation? How many of them can write poetry? I happen to think that on this stance you are absolutely and completely wrong. Are you saying that nobody who chooses math as their field of study has any artistic ability? That's a little. . I don't know what that is. Messed up, I guess. I happen to be a CS major (yeah, so is everybody else on this list), which is a math based field (well, it ain't english!). Among my interests are: Playing/writing for guitar, bass, and drums; Figure drawing, composition, computer art, etc.; _creative_writing_; anything else artistic that I forgot to mention. Am I the only math-based person who enjoys/can do these things? I hope not. The fact is, the more you learn about a field of interest, the more the lines between the fields start to blur. I've had a notion for some time that music and art are intertwined. . . people who have ability in one tend to have ability in the other. But also, music is related to Math in many many ways. But it's also related to language (and the art of expression), in the conveyance of emotion. Art, I believe is related in the same way. There are plenty of different forms of art. . . math probably relates to the realist form, whereas (I really wanna say liberal arts here) english/languages probably relates to abstraction. This answers your question: probably a lot of them! But I would take it one step further. Are math and languages really so far apart? They always seem like opposite ends of the spectrum, but is that really the case? They have so much common ground (in music, art). Neurologists/psychologists welcome to chime in on this. . . I've had theories about left/right side of brain, creativity/analysis, math/english ever since my sister kicked my ass in school (no, she got better grades than me. . . that would be embarassing!). . . hmm. . . think that's it. . figuratively, Rich ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Oct 1997 13:19:52 -0500 (EST) From: Pat Daugherty To: Dream Theater Mailing List Subject: the real majesty... Modern rock is brimming with >bands that can count the number of chords they know on three fingers, then >use those same fingers to play them (and have a finger left over). Yeah i know, we all suffer through that...but I think one important thing to remember is, that it is , after all, rock n' roll we're talking about here. You know, the whole rebellion thingy. Granted the media now 'sells' rebellion to the youth of today, but that's another story. But anyways, part of the rebelliousness of rock has always been its simplicity and rawness. There's a reason why what you hear on the radio is called pop music. Becuaes its popular, and it's what most ppl like. Back when Mozart was alive, there were also the music of the ppl...the simple music everybody could dance to at festivals and such...then there was the 'serious' music which was usually reserved for the royalty. Of course Mozart tried to bring that music to the public with the The Magic Flute and other works. But as you can see, its somewhat more 'accessible' than his other works. (Oh my Ged, Mozart sold out!) Now, with the existance of recorded media, you can actually 'sell' music. Becuase of this somebody living in a certain city can be heard all around the world without him ever leaving that city. But the fact remains that most ppl listen to popular music..and thats whats gonna be on the radio. Prog rock is like the bridge between pop music and 'serious' music. If you want real talent and all that, there's tons of it...and its not that hard to find. There are tons of Jazz and Modern classical composers that are doing some really cool shit...but of course, as it has always been throughout history, it's overlooked by those who just need something to sheik their bouti to. >Is anyone with me when I say that I think DT should take out Scarred from >the setlist and replace it with ToT? Uh no:) Granted i would like to hear ToT live...but i wouldn't sacrifice the-song-that-few-have-heard-live for it. Well obviously some like music for other reasons...a lot of 'hits' now-a-days are simply what gets played a lot at discotheques...obviously your not gonna get much intellectual music there. But there are a lot of ppl who pay most of their attention to lyrics...esp. those who like the ballady type of music, like Eros Ramazotti and that kinda stuff.
