Just an observation. I started re-reading _Atlas Shrugged_, the magnum opus by that elitist, greed-glorifying, atheist novelist-philosopher whom I dare not mention here. When I came to Chapter VIII of Part I, I read this paragraph (p. 215, 35th Anniversary paperback edition: "The beams and girders of the Rearden Metal bridge were coming daily out of the rolling mills, and were being shipped to the site of the John Galt Line, where the first shapes of green-blue metal, swung into space to span the canyon, glittered in the first rays of the spring sun. He had no time for pain, no energy for anger. Within a few weeks, it was over; the blinding stabs of hatred ceased and did not return." Could Mr. Myung, like Neil Peart, have been inspired by you-know-who? Finally, I would be interested in knowing whenever the band plays a set list that differs from the Toad's Place show. Perhaps I am over-obsessed with set lists, but I'd appreciate it if anyone could report any new songs (or even differing set order) to me privately if they don't want to post it to the jam. I wouldn't even mind compiling all of the set lists for the tour if people didn't mind sending them to me and/or the list. Thank you for your time. Work in a fast food joint > or a grocery store some time. People are generally fucking idiots. One night, when I was cashiering at a grocery store, I realized I was having far too many complaints about the cost of oranges. Took a little trip to produce, and realized that the sign for apples had been put in the orange section (right next to each other). The sign *clearly* said apples in big letters, yet the mere fact that it was on the oranges made it the correct price. Yes, the typical customer is, er, "not-bright", simply because you have a sampling of every mental ability in a grocery store. Everybody gotta eat, even morons. And don't even get me started on WIC orders!! "Look, it says right here on the card you have 3 copies of on you right now *and* all the little tags on the shelves that you can only get these kinds of cheese...!!" As far as musical tastes and intelligence goes, there's really no correlation. I've got some friends that are, officially, geniuses. And what do they listen to? Ska. It's certainly not the most complex music (note: non-complex don't mean bad) in the world. Musical taste has more to do with attitude and how a person was brought up. Me, I was weaned on classic rock and classical music, so it only figures my tastes would revolve in those areas. "Heh heh, he said wean..." Dean and Gene, baby. Ween, that is. Brian Henderson email_address_removed "Everybody gotta eat, even morons." -- me "Everybody gotta wear clothes, and if you don't, you get arrested." -- Mr. T ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Oct 1997 02:23:13 -0500 (EST) From: Richard Banister To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: boot_marks_in_dead_horse++ Message-ID: > >Well, I would have to say, _very_ important. I'm sick and fucking tired > talent or the lack of it doesn't have anything to do with artistic > integrity. I'm talking about 'doing art for yourself' and not letting yeah, so maybe I mixed up artistic ability with integrity. Fuck. My point is still completely valid, though. Modern rock is brimming with bands that can count the number of chords they know on three fingers, then use those same fingers to play them (and have a finger left over). I would also venture a guess that most modern music isn't music that comes from the heart, but is dictated by what is popular, and what would get airplay (the exceptions being those bands that ushered in that generation of music. I think that bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana _had_ artistic integrity also). . > out there dont conform in one way or another? I'll admit I've changed my > approach to songwriting just because of audience response, and im sure im > not the only one. that's very true. And it's a shame. Basically, if a band doesn't make money, they can't make their music any more (or follow their dream of making music for a living, as they'll have to get day jobs). Whether they want to or not, bands have to succumb to the mainstream, or else nobody listens to them. So really, the only bands that have artistic integrity are those bands that are obscure, and aren't affraid to remain nameless because they want to remain true to their art. Maybe that's why I hate things once they become popular. hmmm. . . I wonder if that agrees with what I originally said, or if it doesn't even apply, because I've never said anything about it. Oh well. > Subject: Kicking the dead horse known as accessibility.... :) Neal Brown: > statement to me. Of course, you can also say that since nobody's opinion > is necessarily better than anyone else's, Green Day and OFB are equals. unfortunately, that's true. There are people out there who undoubtebly(sic)(I used that word like five times in my last post, and only now do I realize I have no idea how to spell it) love Green Day as much as we love DT, and no doubt moves them as much. It reminds me of a post a while ago (by Barbara, maybe? Someone remind me. . BTW that was the most beautiful post I've ever read on the jam. .almost made me cry) in which the authors brother claims that his music moves him as much as the authors moves her, so how can she put it down? It's true. If it means something to somebody, how can it be any less valid? > keyboard's that shitty, get a new one already. Sheesh. Personally, I > would LOVE to see some more analysis of music on this list. If you think yeah yeah yeah! I'd love that too. . . too many posts about accessibilty/success.. who the hell are these assholes? :) But I would love to do analysis on albums (any albums .. but FII would do nicely), but it just never seems to come up.. . . > >I personally think Neal deserves congratulations for his intelligent > >and well-restrained response to that drivel.
