I must make a comment and the highest recommendation for the new Vitalij Kuprij CD on Shrapnel. Vitalij and Greg Howe just foochin rips up everything. Even the kitchen sink. Greg's playing and tone is reminicent of his 1st CD(My favorite) but better. :) They both do some AMAZING playing on this CD. Greg uses alot of those 2 handed extended arpeggios that he's known for. The song 'Symphony V' is my favorite. Vitalij is just insanely sick. He must have grown up practicing all day and night. This last half of '97 has been a fantastic year for Instrumentals. The whole G3 tour blew me away, MacAlpine, George Bellas, and now the best Shrapnel CD after Perpetual Burn/Dragon's Kiss, 'High Definition' by Vitalij. I'm just amazed. We must be living in a special 'era' now like it was back in the late 80's with Becker&Friedman, Gilbert, Kotzen, etc. "Hell's Kitchen" is also up there as one of the best. Increbible vibe. Off course, we're all waiting for the new project 'Liquid Tension Experiment' with Petrucci/Portnoy/Rudess/Levin. If you like SV and JS - get G3 (if you > don't have one already) IMO EJ is not any worse. How could Phil overlook about Eric? Phil's not sure. He thinks he just plain forgot to mention Richie K and Eric J. An oversight on my part, since both of them are outstanding guitarists. I'd call Richie more blues-based than anything else, though. The solo for "Things Remembered Never Die" is one of the best I've *ever* heard. I've never heard any of Greg Howe's stuff, except for a 5-minute song that an old friend of mine played for me once. May have to look into it though. But as long as we're adding more to the list, here's some more: 1) Tony MacAlpine. One of the kings of neoclassicism, Tony can shred with the best of them but his first allegiance is to the song itself. He has a number of classical influences and plays some nice piano pieces too, as well as playing keys equally as well as he plays guitar. His tone has changed over the years but is still uniquely his own. 2) Carlos Santana. Most of Carlos' stuff has vocals too, but he deserves his own mention because he's an outstanding talent. Rock guitar with solid Latin influences and a groove that moves. 3) Vinnie Moore. Another pure shredder who has really developed over the years. Early on he was a sweep-pickin', arpegiattin' fool, more flash than substance -- but he wrote so well that the songs would stick in your head for a long time afterwards. He's matured a lot, and has developed his own tone and voice. 4) Gary Hoey. This guy hit me like a ton of bricks with his remake of the old Focus tune "Hocus Pocus." A searing tone and pure talent, with lots of blues-rock influence. Straight-ahead rock n'roll, with bluesy voicings and great songwriting. Plus a great Christmas album. And one more new age instrumentalist I forgot to mention last time: 1) John Tesh. Tesh gets maligned a lot, but his piano playing is superb and his songwriting also is impeccable. His latest release, "Avalon," is filled with Italian rhythms and breezy, cheerful tunes. A fine musician, IMHO; maybe not quite at Yanni's level of mastery but good nevertheless. I'm sure I'll think of more later. Thanks for jogging my memory, Peter. Just because you didn't get a 1600 on your SATs doesn't mean you're stupid. Just because you like punk doesn't mean you're stupid. Likewise, liking DT doesn't imply intelligence. People who listen to classical music (the most "intelligent" form of music) can be completely stupid in different ways.. kind of like the difference between intelligence and wisdom. email_address_removed (Ernesto Schnack): > Soooooooo, if you dont give a shit about artistic integrity, your stupid? > How important is artistic integrity anyways? Well, I would have to say, _very_ important. I'm sick and fucking tired of seeing bands with absolutely no talent routinely make gold and platinum selling albums, and bands like DT dabble in obscurity. My high school art teachers favorite expression was "you have to know the rules before you can break them." For example, Picasso (I'll use him even though I don't like his work). If you see his work, you may think "what the fuck? Two eyes on one side of a head?" But the reality is that that guy had incredible skill in realist art as well (witness his pencil sketches). The guy was an incredible artist because he knew how to bend reality to his vision. > So you see? THATS why ppl like rap, country, etc... because their main > concern is the LYRICS. The music is just a background. Are they stupid > because of this? No, THEY JUST HAVE DIFFERENT INTERESTS. And thats what > makes life so interesting. Well, maybe. I can't say why people like a form of music that I don't, because I don't understand it. I can speculate, however, that most forms of popular music are danceable (in some form or another). Rap and R&B make people move, and dancing is just another way of expressing emotion, really. Same thing with country (if you ever watch Country Music Television (oh my god I can't believe I'm saying this), you will undoubtedly notice a predominance of line dancing... it's a completely different attitude than different popular music, but that is undoubtably a big reason why people like it). I was in the gym the other day (becuase I'm such a he-man), and I overheard some guys talking about a rap song that was playing. Someone said "this song has a really fresh beat" or some such thing. . I listened to the song, and thought to myself, this is no different than the last song I heard. Now I realize that I can't understand the differences in rap songs, because I hate them. The same way someone who likes rap, in overhearing me say "look at the way the bass goes from playing the minor 3rd to the root. . it creates such tension," would not understand it, because he has no love for complicated music. Seroussi , again: > Also, some people are more humanist and artistic as opposed to the more > scientific and mathematical...you won't say Albert Einstein was stupid > if he didn't care about music at all, right? no, but I would really think he was missing out. .. However, anyone who doesn't see any mathematics in music, or any art in mathematics, should be slapped upside the head right now. .. :) I get the impression that Einstein would've been a big fan of music. Anybody who knows otherwise is welcome to say. . I'm interested in knowing. Nigel Bridgeman : >> (comment on DT becoming popular attracting a large stupid fan base) > So what if this happens? Who gives a fudge? You don't want a band to > have mainstream success because of a bloody *mailing list*? How > selfish, arrogant and downright silly. Yes, it is selfish. But I don't give a fuck. I'm completely selfless about most things in life; but this, I make an exception. It's not about the mailing list, it's about the fans (who here hates crowd surfers?). If DT becomes popular, they attract a new fan base. Expecting these new fans to become "intelligent" (i.e. go out and immediately buy IAW, Yes, etc.) is probably very unrealistic, although maybe some of them will. However, music is a fad, and these people will not stick with DT for long. What's the average lifespan of a style of music? About a decade? Things like prog are nice because they don't die out, they progress. Prog enjoys a fairly small fan base that keeps it alive, but doesn't bring it into the mainstream. Everything that becomes popular eventually dies. What a completely incoherent paragraph. Oh well. > but my Page Down key was getting worn down from all the discussion about > time sigs from a few jams ago Not me. I enjoy analyzing music because it helps me understand it. More specifically, it helps me make my own music that much more powerful. If it wasn't for bands like DT/Yes/Kansas/old metallica, even some of the alternative bands that got me started, I would still be playing this three-chord bullshit. Now I'm able to expresss myself much better, and every new song I listen to, I learn a little more. If all you read are romance novels, do you ever expect to be able to write well? You could write romance novels, but that's all. If you read everything, you can write anything you want. That's what I want. I want to have the freedom of writing in any style I want, and the power to do it well. That's all for now. . . figuratively, Rich ------------------------------ Date: 27 Oct 97 14:00:09 -0800 From: "Neil Evans" To: email_address_removed Subject: The Edge (Palo Alto) as a Venue Message-ID: Dave Thomas wrote: >Anyone ever been to The Edge before?
