I will try to not repeat many things that were already mentioned. HIGHS 1. Setlist. Overall, quite a decent mix of their material. I really would have liked to hear ToT, but I've already seen it live (evil snicker or whatever Jason B. says at times like this). 2. James. As has already been pointed out, he really seemed to be on target the whole of the evening. Had to repeat this. 3. Derek. He seems to be more into the songs than in previous shows. Adding things here and there that weren't there before. But tastefully done. Probably something as simple as being more comfortable with the songs. And, he didn't taunt James for the second straight show (see below ....). 4. Overall sound. Quite impressive. Similar to the previous weeks' show in Providence, it was loud enough, but not painful. An excellent mix for a live show although LitS suffered from the perpetual "first song of the night" flurry of re-mixing/adjusting. Regardless, isn't it great when you can hear all of the instruments ?? 5. Older songs. They seemed to sound so fresh and tight. Especially Ytsejam and Metropolis. 6. Hollow Years. The sound on this was markedly improved compared to the Providence show. They had JP sit down to play (with a double neck, btw) and lightened the keys in the mix. This seemed to clean the sound up a lot. Although MP decided to spice the last part of the song up with some jazzed up fills that I am not sure fit the song. It did illicit some interesting exchanges though. And, why not have some fun. 7. Scarred. LOWS (Yeah, yeah, picky, picky, picky :) 1. Overall, a lot of technical/logistical screwups, all of which should be precluded via preparation, a few of which always will end up happening because shit happens, but this many was a bit absurd even for a first/second night. The combination of a lot of this seemed to make them a bit tenuous. It seemed that at times they were playing a bit nervously waiting for the next "event". Oddly, the show in Providence a week earlier (their first real show in about five months) was so smooth and tight just like one would expect in the middle of a tour. One would have thought that it would have been the other way around. 2. Mike and his Mic. You are a drummer for a great band (who appears to be fairly strong and not too tolerant of incompetence). You employ some dude to help to stick a mic in front of your face when you are about to sing. You expect that once or twice out of the ten or so times that you want to sing, that he does said job. No dice. Mike was waaaaaaay pissed off and I personally would not want to piss MP off. 3. Megaphone problems (JLMB). Well, it just didn't seem to work. The megaphone, that is. Add another item to the soundcheck list ?? Please tell me that JL just didn't forget to turn the switch on. 4. New Millennium (glad I have spell checker). Similar to how they often use a pre-recorded intro to Metropolis on many occasions, they employed this concept to start this song. Something messed up big time and they were about two seconds from just scrapping the whole song, but MP revived the body on its deathbed. My question is what exactly was the disconnect (this is not rhetorical, I am curious) ?? 5. DS and his collection of Lava Lamps. Looked OK, but if they decide to keep them they are supposed to be turned ON right ??!! They look very odd turned OFF !! CURIOSITIES 1. James vs. Derek. I dont know if this falls into the category of "if you want to see racism, you will find it", but I repeatedly sense hostility between the two. This time, the perpetrator was James who twice made comments in Derek's way that seemed a little too condescending to be friendly. Why cant they just be friends ?? Take a week off and get to know each other better. Go caribou hunting or something. Ice fishing. Play beer-hunter. 2. JP and singing. Fine, call me tone deaf but I cant seem to pick out his voice. Ever. MP can be discerned easily enough (when he has a mic to sing into) but I cant identify JP. Some have said that he just blends in so well ?? 3. How could they not play ToT ?? To me, this is the best song on the CD. They could massage the ending a bit (maybe extend it) and make this a self-contained encore that would set the place ablaze. You know, somewhat on the lines of the "DoE" version of LtL ?? 4. No t-shirts ?? Had to cost the band thousands of bucks in lost profits. And when will they finally sell their merchandise through mail order/fan club anyhow (which is really just a license to print more money) ?????? 5. MP hacking clams all over the stage. JP had to duck one incoming missile. And, call me blind in addition to deaf, but I *know* some straggler-clam ended in JL's hair once. What's that saying, "Aim twice, hack once" !! 6. Fire. I am *positive* that I smelled fire. Twice. As in real fire. That burns things. Help me out. Am I getting loopy in my old age ?? So you can be artistic and mathematical at Music *is* very mathematical... ask MP. :) That's what's great about music in general - it appeals to all different kinds of people. And that DT is able to appeal to just about all kinds of people shows how diverse they are. I know some very intelligent people who aren't really into music at all, and others who are really into it. I have thought about whether people who are CS majors are more likely to like DT than someone who's an English major, and I don't think there's any way to determine that... I think it may have more to do with what kind of music one was exposed to when they were younger. I was exposed to complex music, and had classical piano training... so it would seem logical that that's why I like DT, whereas some of my friends who never had any musical background listen to the same music as the general masses. ** Lars Hellsten (email_address_removed.ca) ** ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 3154 **************************
