Fuck you. How do you define intelligence then? I define it loosely as one's ability to learn and understand. Countless studies have shown that there's a direct correlation between IQ and academic success. In terms of success, period, I would tend to agree with you, since that's entirely subjective. In fact, it could be argued that someone with a lower IQ is more likely to be successful (if you define success in life as happiness), because someone with a high IQ is likely to define much more difficult goals for themselves. > Why? because it's too metallish and metal-heads mosh and you're just too good for > moshing? I tend to agree with this... "metal-heads" and "moshers" are generally not very sophisticated music listeners. That doesn't make them stupid or any worse than anyone else, but someone who's been trained in music from a young age would probably have a very difficult time listening to music that way, or even that type of music. I personally am starting to outgrow FII (although I loved it at first), because most of the songs are too simple and repetitive. There's nothing like LTL. Lines in the Sand is the closest thing, and it's ruined by the terrible chorus (IMO)... Then the next album, Monolith, nobody ever listens >to any more (it had one cool track, "How My Soul..."). I gotta disagree with this assessment of Kansas, keeping in mind that I was about 4 when they were at their height. Sure, they broke with Leftoverture which had the very radio-friendly "Carry On Wayward Son", and continued their sales streak with POKR, but I don't think they changed their writing on that album just to guarantee sales. While "Dust in the Wind," and "Point of Know Return" have _sales_ written all over them, tunes like "Closet Chronicles" and "Paradox" are pure Kansas. As far as Monolith, while I'll agree that the album was overlooked as a whole, I have to disagree that it only had one cool track. "On the Other Side" makes my Kansas Greatest Hits album every time. And if you can get past the popiness, "People of the Southwind" is a killer song also. In short, every one of their albums has the potential hit on it, while also including other longer, less radio-friendly tunes. Just because nothing off the first 3 albums ever got radio play, doesn't necessarily mean they weren't trying to get it. I just don't think their writing styles changed that drastically, just because they hit stardom. Kerry's the man. Message-ID: On my way to work the other day, I heard BMS on WKLQ, here in Grand Rapids, Michigan! I couldn't believe it. It was the first time I heard them on this station since Lie came out. So of course later in the day I did my part as a DT fan and requested the song again, and I told them that I heard the song earlier in the morning, so they'd better not give me this "we don't have that in the studio" bullshit. So when they said "Here's some requested Dream Theater" I truly felt like I had achieved my goal. Out of curiosity, are there any other people in Grand Rapids making the drive to Detroit for the St. Andrews show? And one more thing, I am looking for Michigan metal bands for a compilation featuring only heavier music. Looking for any speed metal, traditional metal, hardcore, progressive metal, groovy metal, punk, that sort of thing. This is, without a doubt, the most pompous, arrogant, and elitist thing I've heard on the 'jam in a long time. Uh, Lars, I'm a "metal - head", and I've had collegiate - level music theory training - and, as my friend Matt says, that doesn't prevent me from enjoying throwing an elbow now and then. I take offense at your denigrating attitude towards a form of music - which you are attacking through it's fans - that I am quite fond of. Just because you listen to Jazz, or Baroque, or Romantic, or Broadway Musicals - whatever your ilk - it does not give you the "musical high ground" to be passing judgment. I'm sick of "serious musicians" types telling me that metal "is childish, and has no sophistication." Tell me Angra has no subtlety, and I'll tell you to unclog your snobbish ears. I do realize I'm just idly wishing for open minds here - most of the "musicians" I know that talk about their "sophistication" are really just turning their noses up at music that they perceive to be "beneath them." You can have all of the training you want - it still does you no good if you can't tell a decent melody when you hear one. Interestingly enough, I don't think FII is as good as it's predecessors either. In my case, however, I'll simply say it's because the songs are not as good, not because they aren't as complex as the older material. I'm certainly not "outgrowing it", however - I'm afraid your level of sophistication must be beyond me, Lars. BTW, I love you insult "metal heads" and then try and make it sound like you're being fair. Very cute - calling an audience "not very sophisticated music listeners" and then trying to brush it off with a weak attempt at claiming "that doesn't make them stupid or any worse than anyone else." Your statements do not ring true, sir - if you're going to insult a stereotype, at least have the balls to actually DO it, rather than trying to pretend you're making an impartial statement. Mike NP - "Piece Of Mind" - Iron Maiden. For us juvenile, unsophisticated types - not that we're any worse than anyone else... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Oct 1997 20:04:32 +0200 From: Shai Yallin To: email_address_removed Subject: How to make DT popular Message-ID: Hi There! After writing my last post last night I couldn't sleep. I thought for about a hour and came up with a plan. ==== Warning - long post. I'm a bit insane right now.... ======= 1) Background - How does a band gets popular? I'm talking about bands in the US, which are most of the bands today... The band is getting some airplay on radio stations (that is, ofcourse, if you have a supportive label :-). If their single becomes a hit, then MTV US starts to play the video. If the song becomes a hit, then worldwide MTVs (Eurpoe, Brazil, etc.) start playing the song. Then if it's a hit on local MTVs, the radio station outside US start playing it. This is why the music scene here in Israel sucks so much... the radio plays only MTV hits - no money for rock show in a 5 million ppl country. 2) The plan - making DT popular What we gotta do is this: PHASE 1 You guys in the states gotta call your local radio stations and request BMS (and HY when the single will be released). Use the radio webpage one of the jammers (kirby? I don't remember) runs. Use both email and phone. Now, if only the jammers will make requests, it won't work. But every jammer has friends who don't have access to the net which are DT fans. Tell them to call too. After the song is over call them and say what D-Man sayed ("what was this song? it was really cool. will you play it again?"). If you e-mail them, request the new song by Dream TheatRE. This is important, otherwise they will realize its a planned action. PHASE 2 After the song gets a decent airplay on local stations, contact regional and national stations and say something like: "there's this new song by Dream Theater that gets played all the time on my local station, but you don't play it often. I want to hear it on your station too!". Use your imagination, but try to sound like the average radio listener. PHASE 3 Now here's the big bucks. When (I wanna be as optimistic as possible so I won't write "if"...) the song gets national airplay, MTV will probably start playing it every once in a while. Don't give up now! start calling MTV requesting the song. After MTV US gets the song in rotation, MTV Europe (and rest of MTVs) will notice this "Dream Theatre" band and will start playing their video. Now worldwide fans should start calling their local MTV saying: "I saw this video by this new band called Dream Theatre and it was really cool. Will you play it again?" or something like that. Once the song is played on worldwide MTV, the band has sold a couple of million FIIs and even if MTV will drop them, the label will start support them and promote them. It's a never-ending circle (much like the infinity sign :-) that goes Sales -> Promotion -> Sales.... Ofcourse you should never stop requesting DT on your local stations, because hits don't last more than 2 months. Ask someone to play Macarenna today and you'll get "MacaWhat?" as an answer... Wow. A long long post. I hope you guys aren't angry. -- Shai Yallin - Kurush on #YTSEJAM "I'm American, honey.
