Every time I've seen tour dates listed for Billy (I'm on Narada's mailing list), he's playing in the Pacific Northwest and the North (mostly in Minnesota, where he hails from, Oregon, and Washington). I hope to hell he comes down South, because I'd pay good money to see this guy play. And he's giving concerts free of charge? hehe Twin Falls, ID (aka jerkwater, USA). Don't ask me why he came here to play at my college (enrollment about 4k). Yea he's from Minnesota originally (which explains his obsession with weather) and from Oregon, LA, and I think back east somewhere. He only played for about an hour, but you could tell he was really struggling to decide which music to play (the fact that he picked up his "weird tunings" guitar on two separate occasions only to say "na, one more on this one first..." demonstrated that fact. Did I mention that I had front row seats and there was no stage so I was less than 10 feet away from him during all this? I didn't catch where you were from, but as far as I can tell the furthest east he's going in the near future is Chicago, Milwaukee and Des Moines. The www page has more dates so I might be wrong here. If you can possibly see this guy you have to. This is the kind of music that you just have to see live. I love it how he would play with his left hand while reaching down and adjusting various knobs on his rig with his right. Anyway, I promise I'll stop plugging this guy (unless someone asks another question). I also promise I'll nix with the damn parenthetical statements (unless they're called for). Ryan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Oct 1997 21:58:07 PST From: "jason braswell" To: email_address_removed Subject: thanks Message-ID: I just want to thank Neal Brown out there for defending me. Why is it that everyone gets all defensive and acts like I (or anyone else whose esthetic position resembles mine) am some sort of snob? ELITISM IS NOT A BAD WORD!!!! I don't listen to DT because they're technical. I listen to DT because they sound good, and that quality, in part, is due to the complexity. I'm so sick of bands that can only play root-fifth chords in one key with blase drum beats etc, etc, etc. If you say that art is completely subjective, then you equate Bach with a two-year old who beats on the floor with a rock and coos capriciously. Finally, I'd like to point out to the guy who offered the less-than-gracious rhetoric to me his logical error. I said that if you say Al Dimeola to the average dickhead, he/she wouldn't know what you were saying to mean that if you're (willingly) brain numb, you won't care to appreciate good music. That is "If p, then q." You responded by saying that your one-year old cousin is a dickhead since he hasn't heard of them; that statement is "If q, then p." The converse is in no way implied by the statement. Finally, I just want to reiterate what a good choice Sherinian was for keyboards. He's fairly subtle on FII, but after really listening for him on the album, I must say I approve thoroughly! jason ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Oct 1997 22:56:28 -0700 From: "woot" To: Subject: I really hope this doesn't sound to out of place, but... Message-ID: <01bce29d$10f27800$LocalHost@sir> A few months ago, I wouldn't have agreed with the people that are saying that most people are stupid. Since then though, I got a job where I'm always meeting new, unfamiliar people. As much as I'd hate to say it, the average person is extremely dumb. also, since we're on the IQ subject, the "normal" range is from roughly 84-116. Therefore, a person whose IQ is 84, is average. However, they are also only 19 points away from being in the "retarded" range. Notice that this is only the average. I also tutor math, and am constantly meeting very bright people. I would assume that the jam itself gives us a fairly decent cross-section of the people that listen to DT. I think we'll all agree that the average person on this list is quite a bit smarter than the average person, not that I won't admit that certain things I see on this list are absolutely stupid. So by this one may say that the person that listens to DT is smarter than one who doesn't. I don't think it's so much that we being smarter are able to decide for ourselves what's good and not go for what's cool, I think that smarter people just like smarter music. Pure and simple. Please refrain from flaming (although since seroussi is in this conversation I think that I might as well be prepared for flamage). Message-ID: Hey there all you crazed Ytsefans.... Well...I've got to just say a few words based on the Toads show this past Saturday night... First... Skadz..It was great to meet you. There was also another jammer who came up to me and filled me in on where the bathroom was...good call. Second... Speaking of the bathroom, when I went down the stairs to find the men's room, I walked right past the band's dressing room before they went on. I walked into the bathroom and who did I see but John Petrucci. I went absolutely numb. He was talking to some guy that was in an up and coming prog band. I had to say something to "the man". So, I went up to JP and said hello, what's up...blah blah. I shook his hand, and told him to have a killer show... I guess there were better things to say, but shit, he snuck up on me! :) That made all my aggrevations about getting to the show go right out the window...to think, I met John Petrucci...hmmmm. Some of you probably think I'm nuts, but people from little ol' Stratham NH DO NOT see many rock heroes around..so it was pretty cool! :) As far as the set, DAMN........ They were so awesome. They each nailed their parts to the note.....the person that I was psyched to hear sing well was....Mike Portnoy...no actually, it was James. :) James was right on the money the entire night and he fuckin' rocked. I have to admit though, I almost passed out during Metropolis when JM played the 8-finger stuff...and during JP's rockin' solo. I looked at my friend when JP was rockin' the house and we both almost threw up.. They were so on, it was sickening.... But most importantly, Derek was making love to his keys up on stage and had a kick ass shirt on! :) I was so impressed.... The mix was pretty much perfect (considering the last show I saw was the Strand in 96). I had an awesome time listening to my musical gurus work their magic up on stage. I was laughing so hard at times with my buds when the guys in the band were pulling some crazy and sick shit off on their instruments. I've never had a better time. For the most part, the crowd was pretty polite...except for those crowd surfurs who were dropped on their head... oh well...all in all I'd say that the concert was "kick ass"! ..I know you've probably heard all this from someone else but..... How important is artistic integrity anyways? Sometimes I think its just their to fill up the ol' ego, and give more validity to art than it really deserves. (Notice i said 'SOMETIMES') In any case, if DT get there moment in the spotlight, more ppl will be exposed to them. There are still a lot of ppl that dont know they exist, and would love these guys. Lets look at Rush. Rush has come to a point were practically everybody knows of their existance. So most ppl who would like them, usually do end up liking them. And why is this? Mostly because of the success of Moving Pictures. (I guess we could see 2112 as their I&W). And secondly, i think it has more to it than 'simplicity'. I've come to realize that many ppl listen mainly to lyrics. The music is just there to support them...so obviously if its just supporting, its gonna be simple. (This is actually what a song SHOULD be, according to the dictionary definition). DT (and most prog bands) are in the borderline between 'songs' and instrumental music. If you really love MUSIC, chances are you'll like DT (unless your not into the genre), and if you only pay main attention to the lyrics, you'll only like some songs, and the rest will put you to sleep. Of course I'm generalizing, and there's a whole grey area. So you see? THATS why ppl like rap, country, etc... because their main concern is the LYRICS. The music is just a background. Are they stupid because of this? No, THEY JUST HAVE DIFFERENT INTERESTS. And thats what makes life so interesting. poof, Ernesto ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Oct 1997 01:33:00 +0500 From: Andrew Rittner To: email_address_removed Subject: Moving Myung Message-ID: On 27-Oct-97, email_address_removed wrote: > YTSEJAM Digest 3151 >In Toad's I met Matt and Ytsejim. I've seen DT three times now, and I've of course been completely ass-kicked every time. But that goes without saying. Anyway, JM has been moving a bit more. I remember seeing him on the FF96 at the Strand, and he never budged the whole night, even when the bouncers were dragging the cimian punks by him. So the fact that he IS moving around on stage some is nice. However, I wouldn't expect him to interact with the audience a lot. I'm an all-bass person, playing the bass (duh) and the tuba, in various sorts of music. In jazz and rock especially, the bass player (or tuba player as the case may be) has to really concentrate on keeping the groove going so that the higher soloist types (sax/trumpet/Petrucci) can tool around without having to worry about the groove. I find that when I'm playing music that has a complex, fast rhythm, I tend to just zone in on the drummer(s) and keep the groove going. I usually close my eyes. A friend at Toad's who hadn't seen DT before told me it looked like JM was in some sort of trance up there, and I figure he's probably so busy keeping with the groove that he doesn't have time to fool around. In a "lesser band" the bass player can fool around, jump about, or whatever, but he's also probably subscribing to the "God save the E-String" school of bass, which isn't really all that hard. Anyway. This little ramble was supplied by my entire lack of sleep for the last few days. Derek: I was looking at him up there, and thinking about how utterly cool and self-assured he must be. Every keyboard player I've ever seen in my life has hidden behind their respective rack. He just stands, on a raised dias no less, virtually naked to the audience. And he dances to top it all off. When you think about it, every other member of a band has something to hide behind (even a singer, who can distract the audience by running around a lot) but Derek just throws himself out there for all of us to see. I probably would feel uncomfortable like that, myself, so extra kudos to him. Crowd surfers: DIE DIE DIE!!! The high points of my evening, DT aside, are when the fans up front throw the surfers to the bouncers. Sort of an idiot-garbage disposal as it were. I love it! If they're gonna be stupid, throw them out... The following points have been raised (well, something resembling the following points - I ain't gonna go through them all again): 1. If DT become popular, this list will be filled with mindless fans who think that DT rulz and stuff. So what if this happens? Who gives a fudge? You don't want a band to have mainstream success because of a bloody *mailing list*? How selfish, arrogant and downright silly. 2. If DT become popular, they will attract the sort of fans who don't appreciate and study the music. Who gives a toss? I don't know about anyone else here, but my Page Down key was getting worn down from all the discussion about time sigs from a few jams ago. I consider myself to be as big a DT fan as most of us here - does that mean that I like to analyse the music or appreciate time changes? Hell no - I like the music because it sounds great, not because of its complexity. I've heard it said that only musicians can appreciate prog. Bugger off, I say. Those are the two points I wanted to discuss. It pisses me off no end when I read posts from people who's main reason for not wanting DT to have mainstream success is because of the 'unintelligent' people who may wander in, or who may become DT fans. I'd consider myself to be an 'unintelligent' person who knows nothing about music - when I joined this list last year, I knew only one thing about DT - I liked their music. I have no musical training, no musical skill whatsoever. I had no knowledge of most prog bands, but because of the jam I've now bought cds by such bands as Rush, Fates Warning, Yes, Savatage, Stratovarius, Galactic Cowboys, Lemur Voice, King Crimson, Enchant, Jethro Tull, King's X... the list goes on. If I hadn't decided to subscribe in the first place, my cd collection would be much different (and smaller). My tastes have changed dramatically in the last year, and there's no reason why the 'unintelligent' fans can't be similarly affected. People can change and grow, and so can their tastes. Who knows, the teenage grunge fans of today could be playing in the progressive metal bands of tomorrow. Keep an open mind - is that too much to ask? I have no idea what I'm really talking about, so I'll stop now. Just had to get all that off my chest (and it doesn't even scrape the surface of how I really feel). Love, Spiff.
