Be well. +------ Ummm... to be true: no (and I've just listened to both FII & Fire Garden again)... also I so far had admired JP for sounding quite different from other guitar gods (and this while having no complaints about SV's or Satch's tone either), so what struck me most on FII was his Holdswordesque solo on "Trial of Tears" which I nevertheless found remarkable. The conceptual similarities I would tend to more attribute to rather *vague* stilistic proximity, like use of certain scales, rhythms etc. etc., e.g. in the same vein I often think SV must have been incredibly influenced by McLaughlin, while in fact he never mentioned him as a major influence. (BTW, on the other hand SV often plays *uncomplicated* in a straightforward manner that I've rarely heard from JP resp. DT in this form). Oh well, maybe the side I for one would like to see still further developed is the rhythmic one, so maybe DT should go for Trilok Gurtu as an additional percussionist }-:-} <--- heikeish trickster smiley Best, Heike ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Oct 1997 16:38:52 -0500 (EST) From: "Richard A. It got even better today when I was listening to my .ra of WAYN. Granted, this is a amazing experience in an objective sense, but as I was listening my phone rang. I picked it up and it was a lady from The Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY, where DT played last year. She was calling to tell me that they are calling everybody who ordered tickets last year via credit card to tell them that DT WILL BE PLAYING AT THE CHANCE AGAIN ON NOV. 25TH. TICKETS GO ON SALE THIS SATURDAY (she also told me that if you call on, say, Friday, that they will hold some tickets for you). If this info has already been shared in my absence then I apologize for the repeat. But if not, you're welcome. Richie P.S. Everybody go out and buy the new Metal Edge. Not because it has a review of FII, and not because it has a couple of pic from DS's birthday, but because I'M IN IT!!!! Yes, that's right. On page 82, there is a picture of Bret Michaels at his solo show in L.A. being surrounded by fans. If you're looking at Bret, you'll see blonde woman to his right with her head cocked back. I'm the guy right next to her with the dark hair, backwards baseball cap, and big shit-eating grin. I'm not just some head in the background....I'm right fuckin' there!!!! Now THIS is the highlight of my weekend. Hopefully the next time I'm in Metal Edge it will be fo musical reasons. Anyway, just thought I'd share. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Oct 1997 15:54:25 -0600 From: "Todd O. I'm only using one person's post as a reference to what others have said, and I don't mean this to be a flame, only my opinion of the entire situation. That being said, Jason Braswell wrote: >I'm pretty sure I don't want DT to become popular for a few reasons. >1) People are too damn stupid to really appreciate DT as they are I've seen several people (not just Jason) write that they don't want the "unintellegent" to enjoy DT music for their own reasons. I really resent this. I'm certainly not stupid, but I don't consider myself the most intellegent person on the planet either. I really like DT, and I like them for more reasons than the fact that they use odd time sigs and write complex music. I like them because they use a *variety* of techniques to make music. People will hear what they want to hear in music, whether it's simple or complex, and they can make their own judgements about it. Want a couple of illustrations? The other day an acquaintance of mine commented on what he heard in DT's music. He said, "All their music (pre ACOS) is just a bunch of scales, repeating patterns, and regularly progressing chords." The first thought that came to my head was, "You're full of shit!" But then I thought about it and realized that's what Metropolis pt. 1 is, and I heard similar scalar patterns in Scarred and Caught in a Web. Don't get me wrong. I love those songs. But what he heard was not the complex patterns that I heard but the more simple ones, and he was actually turned *off* by what he heard. On the other hand, I was talking with another acquaintance who raved about ACOS because she enjoyed its simple melodies but walked away when I played New Millennium for her. The point of all this is that DT has always written complex and simple types of music, and people will hear what they want to hear and judge DT based on that. Why do some Ytsejammers think they need to be "big brother" and protect the masses from good music simply because they won't enjoy every aspect of it? If people enjoy the simple aspect of DT's music more than the complex, let them enjoy it. The music is not any less special because someone gets something different out of it. Message-ID: Hey everyone! I am just getting out of two trances.. 1. My "Oh my god, I just saw DT!" Trance and 2. My "Oh my god I've been on the road for 2 days!" Trance. After much driving from the lakes region of NH (picking up numerous friends along the way) I made my way to Toads Place in New Haven CT for my second DT show. I saw them at The Strand in Providence last year and had a great time despite mixed feelings about the crowd etc... BUT, this show fucking kicked my ass! First, they started off with a pre-show listening of some unreleased stuff. Very cool, of course then there was "rooster" which is a good choice to play before the band comes on, it's a pre-warning that you are about to get your musical ass kicked! Then a keyboard part come on like during the FF96 tour. Then, Derek came out by himself and started with the into to Lines in the Sand. The band came out and finished the song.. Portnoy sand the duet part with James. Kind of cheesy, but Mike still thinks he has a good voice : ) Next, I think they kicked into high gear with "Under a glass Moon" if my memory serves me. Before I type out an entire ytsejam on this show, maybe I'll just give you my high points and low points. High Points: James. He was right on the money. The guy really didn't miss a beat. He was off when I saw him at The Strand last year, that night he seemed like he was suffering from a cold or something. Last night, he wowed me! Every note. Not one cracked voice part. VERY IMPRESSIVE! Derek.. I don't want to re-new the Derek vs. Kevin controversy, but I have one thing to say.. DEREK WAS THE BEST REPLACEMENT FOR KEVIN. He really wowed me. He was a lot more emotional than most keyboarders. I swear that he was making love to his keyboards while playing. He really gets into it at least. John, Mike and John, EXTREMELY SOLID as always, these guys never cease to amaze me. I kind of expected them to, but I wouldn't consider them a high point of the show... They just shock the shit out of you no matter what. Hearing "Voices, Under a Glass Moon, Metropolis Jam, Ytsejam, BMS and JLMB" Seeing people go ape-shit over DT. THe mix, very good. You could hear every part and it was mixed very well. If you are a 'legger, this was the show to be at. I have to say that I couldn't have picked a better show if I was one. If you are one and you have a copy of the show, I hope you'll offer it in trade or something. Meeting Skadz, very cool. This guy makes his way around the crowd as if he is an actual playing member of the band. Nice to meet you Skadz. To all the other jammers that I missed, sorry you couldn't have met me and likewise. I wasn't wearing a jam shirt-- pooh. DOWNPOINTS. Crowd surfing. I think that they should shoot the bastards. That'll drop em. I wanted to see Myung's Metropolis bass solo and I couldn't because some asshole was blocking my view with his entire body.. jerk! Tall People. I am 5'11" tall. The guy that just had to be in front of me was at least 6'7", I wanted to slap him and tell him to go in the back. No T-Shirts, WTF?? I heard why.. but I hope that they will have extras and will be selling them via the web or something. I really wanted one. The only piece of DT apprarel that I have is a stupid hat (didn't have enough money for the FF96 shirts at the time) If I was a 'legger: I would have been disappointed when the phone rang at the club and DT was starting their set. I also wanted to ask if anyone noticed the fire that started while we were there... It was one of the spotlights and it actually started right up.. Thank god for a quick acting roadie that unplugged it and snuffed it out. Send a wonderful smell through the room. Well, I'm sure that there is more, but I'll spare you the details... later, J ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Oct 1997 18:28:04 -0500 (EST) From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Myung . signing...
