All in all the band was in good form..near the beginning of the show James mentioned that this was the first night of the tour, so anything could happen... The setlist to the best of my memory was something like.... Lines in the Sand - with petrucci singing the first lines of each chorus and labrie doing the pinnick stuff---this sounded kind of weak ...i don't know, mabey i'm too critical... Under A Glass Moon Voices Hollow Years Beginning of The Mirror Pull Me Under Just Let Me Breathe Burning My Soul Scarred Peruvian Skies Ytsejam Metropolis The Crimson Sunset A New Millenium there were other parts to A Change of Seasons intertwined into the set as well as some other short instrumental pieces... One down side was there were NO SHIRTS FOR SALE!!! I hope it was just because they haven't gotten them pressed yet or something...but i was looking forward to adding another shirt to my collection..Oh well, mabey later on the tour... On the way out of the club they played what sounded like a slow jazzy version of "under a glass moon"......i almost couldn't believe it!!! .Tim email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Oct 1997 23:34:51 -0500 (CDT) From: john jens To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: 4 bits and a .sig Message-ID: instrumental music: ozirc tenticles. yanni is awesome. tool kicks ass. dt sux ;) j j e n s @ s h e l l . w e b z o n e . n e t s h e l l . w e b z o n e . n e t / ~ j j e n s / ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Oct 1997 22:06:24 -0700 (PDT) From: "Paul W. In contrast to what one Jammer posted, the music "biz" -IS- quite a bit different now than it was when I&W was released. -- Far fewer rock stations on the air -- Many of the remaining stations have grown more "cautious" -- Almost no chance at all of help from MTV (U.S.) -- The industry is currently in a state of flux By that last, I mean that right now there are no overwhelming trends leading airplay consultants and radio station music directors by their noserings. Alternative is finally starting to eat itself (the sure sign: when mallternative kids start noticing that "hey, this sounds like that other band" often). Many of the bands and songs that are doing well right now are sounds that virtually no-one two years ago -- hell, even one year ago -- would have expected to "go big." Ska? Swing? Who'd'a'thunk it? I'm not afraid of DT suddenly becoming popular for two reasons: 1) I think it's an outside chance at best because their label MUST get behind them to a greater extent, but 2) even if they did, if ANYONE out there deserves some long-overdue recognition, it's Kevin James and the boys. For them to assemble their talents and grace us with the results and NOT being rewarded is an abomination before God. :) --=-- Since I am probably not gonna be able to make it to the Chicago show, my ticket, currently in Wes Foll's sister's hands, probably won't be needed. This is NOT prog, this is not overly technical, but it -is- excellent rock-metal, eminently moshable. :) I can remember seeing them play shows at the Wreck Room here that were just electric, and it was one of those shows where they got noticed and finally signed. They were one of the practice bands at the Wreck Room (had fourteen practice spaces for bands as well as the main stage) and since a good friend lived in the loft over the venue, they were just one of several bands who we got to know pretty well (aside to Skadz: Bonedance was another). I'm delighted they're finally getting big; I can remember when they couldn't afford their practice space rent and had to help out in the club instead. :) -- +-- ...once the cloud that's raining ---+- Paul W. Does anyone hear Steve Vai all over FII? I mean, JP's tone, his wa, his harmonic calls, his song-writing, everything. Specifically, I hear Fire Garden. Not so much in individual licks, but everything else. Speaking of licks, I hope that in about two alboms, all JP's shred will be tasteful, rather like John Mclaughlin and Steve Morse. Not how they play, but with the same class. I think the really fast part in Hell's Kitchen is impressive, but haven't we all heard and some of us played triplets and the like like that often before? I'm not saying I could do better, mind you. Anyway, I'm done. Be well. Matt B "No man is an island? Pok. Rubbish! Every one of us is an island. If it were not so, we should go mad at once. Message-ID: I just wanted to echo some things that have already been said and respond to the people who have been really pushing to get DT "popular." Granted, I want DT to be as successful as possible, as they deserve it more than anyone I can think of, but I'm pretty sure I don't want DT to become popular for a few reasons. 1) People are too damn stupid to really appreciate DT as they are; they'd much rather listen to smashing pumpkins or jewel since it's on a level more accessible to them. This means that, logically speaking, either DT has to raise the IQ of half the people around or they have to change their music. You figure out which one is more likely. 2) It won't matter if they do get a boom in their audience anyway. That kind of popularity is definitely passing. The tide will go out just as it came in. The way to spread the word about DT is through word of mouth to intelligent people who will know to appreciate it. I found out about them not through MTV or the radio, but by talking to smart people (and reading JP's column in Guitar World he certainly stuck out there). For examples of ideal levels of success, look at Al Dimeola, John Mclaughlin, Chick Corea, etc. Say these names to the average dickhead, and you'll get blank countenance and a "huh?" But their fans, like DT's, are dedicated, and so they've been around for decades, not minutes like the standard garbage bands are, and I'm pretty sure that none of the aforementioned are starving. That's all I have to say except for that I pretty much like FII except for a few tracks I'd like to delete (like BMS). -jason ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Oct 1997 01:39:36 -0500 From: Jon Dery To: email_address_removed Subject: Taod's Place show *SPOILERS* Message-ID: Just got back from the New Haven gig. Great show. I'll make this short since I am mighty tired: Guess what everyone had the distinct pleasure of listening to before the show?... The songs that didn't make the album!: Cover My Eyes Raise The Knife- sounds great w/ vocals Where Are You Now? The Way It Used To Be- really cool song. VERY U2-ish. (No Speak To Me--time for the show!) Setlist (as best as I can remember-- parts may be out of order): Lines In The Sand- AWESOME opener & the best song of the night. Derek just walked onstage by himself and started cranking out the intro and then the whole band came out. Got me all warm and fuzzy and I felt that way the whole show. Under A Glass Moon- had some new syncopated/unison parts--really cool. Burning My Soul/Voices Hollow Years- no harmonies at all! Also, Mike was bored so he decided to play crazy, off-beat fills towards the end. This caused James to give him an evil look. Mike just kept doing it and stuck his tounge out at him--very funny. Meanwhile, Derek kept listening to Mike's fills and looking at him like "Wow. I can't believe you're doing that. James is gonna KILL you!" Hilarious. The Mirror (actually only Puppies On Acid)/Crimson Sunrise/JLMB- interesting combo. Peruvian Skies- the harmonies are so much better live. Sounded great! PMU Scarred/Darkest of Winters/Ytsejam (w/ brief drum solo)/Metropolis (this could be wrong. I forget the exact order.) Yes, they really did play Scarred. James needed to read the lyrics, though. Encore: New Millennium/Inevitable Summer--->Crimson Sunset w/ bits of A Fortune In Lies & Lie- In New Millennium they messed the beginning up bad, but kept repeating it until they got it right. James sang the higher harmony parts while Mike sang the lower--they nailed them very well. Inevitable Summer was slower and groovier. After the show we got to hear a swingin' Lounge version of UAGM. Not kidding! They played it over the house system. It wasn't done by DT. Actually, nobody new what the hell the deal was but it was damn funny. All in all, it was a great show and looks like they have an exciting tour to offer this time around. GO AND SEE THEM! You will not be disappointed.
