They are: The Rudess Morgenstein Project - if you don't know about this, this band is made up of a keyboardist (Jordan Rudess) and a drummer (Rod Morgenstein). The music is prog rock. Very technical. Hub City Kid by Dave LaRue (bassist for Steve Morse Band and the last two Dixie Dregs albums) - this CD is show off time for Dave. He's incredible, along with the rest of the musicians. The music is kinda jazzy, I really don't know how to describe it. It's not aggressive, it's just cool. Some other recommendations I have (you probably know about these already, but just in case) are: Dixie Dregs, Steve Morse Band, Jason Becker, Marty Friedman. Hope that helped. I've been thinking about this a bit lately. I mean, FII is a great album, but I still can't get used to Hollow Years, etc. And I also skimmed through the Modern Drummer interview with MP. This is scary. I dunno, the interviews with JP and now MP are kinda worrying me. Essentially, I'm wondering if this band is going to end up being Metallica with keys and a better singer. It actually resembles Kansas' Point Of Know Return for me--the songs are shorter, more "mature", although still good. Then the next album, Monolith, nobody ever listens to any more (it had one cool track, "How My Soul..."). I'm anxious to hear what DT's next full studio album will sound like. It's not so bad if they decide to keep playing some commercial-type songs as long as they keep delivering the goods on some of the others (I'd still own Metallica's Black Album if it had even one track on it like Dyers Eve or whatever). For those of you who've read these interviews--doesn't it sound at least a little like the band is drifting into the realm of eMpTyV?? (Plus, all those damn ads for gear in musicians' magazines bug me. ;) ) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Oct 1997 17:42:10 -0500 From: email_address_removed (Bruce Forst) To: email_address_removed Subject: how many times must I... I don't know if the quotes in the song, the ones that refer to gene kelly and "what else can we do babe?" are actual quotes of his dad or not... they might be. What he said is merely that FII's *airplay* is inferior to I&W's *airplay*. And the tour isn't going to stop in your town unless your town's radio stations play play play DT. The I&W tour went everywhere because PMU and (to a lesser extent) TTT were all over the radio and MTV. The Awake tour went far fewer places because there was far less radio exposure, and no MTV. The ACoS "tour" was three dates in Japan and four here, because there was no radio airplay (well, go figure, it's a 23-minute song, but still...) > The Jam wasn't around when I&W was released so they certainly > couldn't request our help then...why do they need it now? It certainly isn't They need our help now for a few reasons. One, we're devoted fans, and we want to see these guys do well, so that they'll keep doing it forever. Two, we're really good at doing shit like this. If the Jam can get Elektra Freakin' Records to release ACoS, surely we can get a radio station in Backwater, Tennessee to play Burning My Soul three or four times a day. According to Mike (and he'd know better than most of the rest of us), radio airplay == success. > that FII isn't as radio friendly as I&W - in fact it's the opposite! So > what's > the deal? I find it hard to believe that the music industry and the > listening > public are so different now than 5 years ago. Any thoughts anybody? It's certainly a weird thought, but it's true. Five years ago, you still had Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Van Halen, Metallica, etc, etc, etc on MTV News, on the guitar magazines, on the radio, et cetera. Now it's all "R&B" (Marvin Gaye must be turning in his grave) and techno. In the age of the Internet, five years is a generation. So, turn off the damned computer, get on the horn, and ORGANIZE your friends and family into a radio-calling machine. Call regularly. Call *ONLY* when the music director is there. Have everyone request THE SAME SONG (like BMS). And have each person call, say, once every three hours. If they hear from the same person over and over again, they'll start to ignore you. But if there are a ton of people between your first call and your second, they won't recognize you. Also, if, by the grace of Ged, you happen to actually *hear* DT on the radio, call as soon as the song is over and be all like "Wow, who was that? They're really good! They kinda remind me of Metallica. Are you going to play that again?" I'll tell you one thing. It's nice that the guys are actually being honest about wanting to be succesful. I get tired of hearing bands (like Me$%ll&ca) who are constantly saying "Yeah we dont give a shit about what others think, and we only care about the music, not the money') Of course thats easy to say when your under shitloads of money, but i disgress. There seems to be many ppl that, because of various 'disappointments' with other bands, are worried, and are sometimes even EXPECTING DT to go commercial. And that just gives off this negative vibe (as cheesy as that may sound). Let the guys be. Will they change? Of course they will. Its obvious after the last 3 albums that these guys are changing. And FII is where, IMO, they're searching for a new sound, which they'll hopefully find in the next couple of albums. They want to be able to take from ALL their influences. I sometimes see I&W as a trap they set theirselves in. The music and cover scream PROG METAL! And i remember looking at it some years ago, and thinking, gosh, now if these guys wanted to be funny, or play funk, or something like that, they wouldn't be able to. And i think that's what its about. They're trying to get to the point where they can do whatever they want. And you know what? In the future, they'll probably drift away from the prog stuff. It'll still be there, but its gonna be a part of their sound. Just a part. Just because they start playing simpler music, doesn't mean they 'sold out' or whatever generic term you want to give it. If thats the case, then Rush has sold out plent of times throughout their careers. And i doubt thats true. In any case, I think artistic integrity is slightly overrated, but thats for another post:) Ærnesto ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 3147 **************************
