NO! Message-ID: In repliance to a post in the lasy 'jam, SURELY if _Falling Into Infinity_ sells well, this is supporting Dream Theater as a musical entity unto themselves, not a commercial entity to be toyed with? High sales of FII are going to show that the record buying public LIKES what it is hearing, hence the record company is HARDLY going to tell them to do something different - that would be shooting themselves in the foot (or groin, or forearm.... who knows, it's a metaphor). Large sales of FII will lead to something along the same lines - as far as albums go. It sounds like the Metropolis II EP will be a mite different - at least with that song, in that' it's 23 minutes, blah blah blah. But the new album -if, and only if FII is successful would only reflect good sales by staying true to what the band wants. What would worry the label more is a change of direction following a successful album - and they can equally be wrong (example: non-USA sales of Faith No More post-_The Real Thing_). My point? Probably not a lot. I mean the word "success", when used in context with the words "Dream Theater" is, I'm sorry to say, realtive to the situation. This is not Alanis Morrissette (damn, forget what consonants to double and what not - I know I spelt it wrongly). This is not The Spice Girls, this is not Michael Jackson, this is not popular music (at least not to the 'masses' (in lieu of a better term - that's a bit derogatory, everyone here is part of one 'mass' or another)). So, I've said my piece. Relative success, I believe IS possible with this album, I mean it fucking (metaphorical expletive) kicks (metaphor) ass (third metaphor). This is a winner of an album, and IF the right track (Hollow Years is, I believe a good choice) is played to the right audience (sorry, but this right audience will probably not include the majority of Americans :-)), then this album is on it's way. I know sales here (Australia) have been good - relatively speaking, again. All stores sold out first week of release, and sales are apparently doing wellin all stores here (Hobart - any other Tasmanian Ytsejammers out there?) Well, end of my rant. Obligatory album review: Sure is a good one. Chris Groves. email_address_removed.au Top Five albums now playing: 1. 'Blue'; Doug Anthony All Stars 2. 'Falling Into Infinity'; Dream Theater 3. Maybe even some classical guitar, or latin instrumental > music. Well, this screams two things to me: Al DiMeola and Mahavishnu Orchestra. If you want some DiMeola with a world music flavor, check out "Kiss My Axe". Amazing production, and just a huge cast of players. No one can NOT love that album. If you want some more latin-sounding stuff, check out "Passion Grace and Fire", which is DiMeola, John McLaughlin (The creator of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and an evil player!), and Paco DeLucia (One of the premiere Flamenco plyers out there... he can solo with his fingers faster than most of us can pick!). If you wand to check out some Mahavishnu, get "Birds of Fire" and "And Inner Mounting Flame". Very eastern sounding... guitar, tablas and violin. Fantastic music. As far as classical, you can never go wrong with Pagannini, so long as you get the more recognized pieces. I once bought a Paganini compilation that was all catroon sounding music... didn't sound like the Paganini who was rumored to have sold his soul to the devil. The original man, Paganini, would get bored with his pieces, and to make them more challenging to play, he'd cut a string or two (or three) off his violin and play that way. Liszt is another great for classical music (Both of these players are from the Romantic era). He's the Paganini of the piano. He was influenced by Paganini's work, and reputation, to go into a closet and practice for 8-12 hours a day. The only other piano work I've heard that frightens me as much is Chopin. If you need more recommendations, let me know. If you get any of this stuff, review it, so I can see what you think! I > think his music does suffer from the fact that it just can't possibly be as > cool on CD as it is live. I will do my part here... :) I'm a HUGE HUGE HUGE Michael Hedges fan. A while back I joined Taproot, the Hedges mailing list. One of the first questions I asked was "Is there anyone who uses these same techniques as Hedges?" because I LOVE the sound of tapping the rhythm and the melody on the acoustic guitar. Such a huge and natural sound! I was referred to two great new players. The first was Michael Gulezian, whose music is more orchestrated (violins with him, and bass on a couple songs) like the newer Hedges work. This stuff was really cool, but the other one I was told about was Billy McLaughlin's "Fingerdance". Bought it immediately. This stuff is extremely cool music. The stuff on this album is much easier than the majority of Hedges works, but comparing their backgrounds, you'd expect that, since Billy hasn't been at it as long. Never the less, Fingerdance is astounding. It would probably be a better choice for people looking into this style of solo instrumental guitar than Hedges, because it's more readily digestd. California to play his music for a living. After being there for a very short time, his loft was broken into, and all of his gear was stolen, except for an acoustic guitar that he had I think in his trunk. He took it as fate, and decided he'd just play acoustic from then on (he didn't have insurance... GET INSURANCE IF YOU HAVE GEAR AND CAN'T KEEP AN EYE ON IT!). Anyways, he's become a real monster. This album is extremely uplifting. This music is absolutely amazing live. I haven't seen McLaughlin, but I've seen Hedges videos, and I've written songs in this style... they come across with 10X more emotion (if that's possible) live. Billy ought to record a live album! If you can see him or Michael Hedges, don't miss out. If you want to try something from Hedges, get either "Oracle" (sometimes referred to as "The Second Law") or Aerial Boundaries. If you want to hear this stuff live, get "Live on the Double Planet". Take care! > From: Chad Mitchell > Subject: Instrumental music... If I had seen this post, I wouldn't have had to post my last one! :) Just so you know, Friday Night in San Fran is a readily available album... it's also available as a gold cd reissue. Anyway, I don't know if anybody has commented on this because I read about 1 in every 5 jams, but one jam I caught had somebody post a snippet from MP about how we need to call our radio stations and request DT so we can get the tour to come to our city. Then he went on saying that the I&W tour went everywhere etc etc... Did this disturb anybody else? I'm just wondering what is so different now that DT isn't getting airplay? Or perhaps MP, without knowing it, is admitting that FII is an inferior album to I&W? The Jam wasn't around when I&W was released so they certainly couldn't request our help then...why do they need it now? It certainly isn't that FII isn't as radio friendly as I&W - in fact it's the opposite! So what's the deal? I find it hard to believe that the music industry and the listening public are so different now than 5 years ago. Any thoughts anybody? And as for JLMB, it kicks fucking ass. I love it. And for the misheard lyrics on BMS, it sounds more like "and you ask me why my hair's green" than "you ask me wheres my hairspray".
