If anybody out there know how I can get two tickets (ticket brokers, whatever), please send me an email. I'll try to make it worth your time. I apologize if this has already been mentioned...but as I am now listening to "The Darkest of Winters" off of the Seven-Wonders compilation (awesome BTW), I noticed two things: TRACK 4. Home for the Holidays Jam - Most of this track is the beginning of "Lines in the Sand" .... TRACK 5- Caught in alice's nine inch took garden - begining music behind verse is "New Millenium"... also the music before the verse is like "You not me".... Its interesting to see the evolution of the ideas over a few years time.... Message-ID: <01bce103$329f8d80$LocalHost@sir> Ok guys forgive me if I sound like I'm related to this guy, but I'm not. Billy McLaughlin is one of the most unbelievable guitarists I've ever seen. I just went to a concert that he gave at my college. There were probably 75 people there and the admission was free. He's travelling all over the country doing this stuff for free, in the hope that enough people will buy his CD's at the concerts that he will be able to support his wife and 5 kids. He's an extremely nice person as well. Basically what his deal is, is he plays the melody, the harmony, and the bass (and percussion occasionally) all on one acoustic guitar. He just taps out a melody with a couple fingers on his left hand, and the harmony with the other two fingers, while tapping the bass line with his right hand. I think his music does suffer from the fact that it just can't possibly be as cool on CD as it is live. At the concert he did it kinda like the story teller's series on VH1 (the only time I ever watch VH1 is this show). He would just tell how why and where he wrote each song before he played it. I really think you guys should check him out. I'll post again soon with some tour dates and a phone # to order some of his stuff. I guarantee you won't be disappointed. He played a new song that he didn't have a title for and it sounded very much like a "Crimson Sunrise" so I suggested. He seemed to like it so you never know. This guy is struggling to make a living and in a world with so few pure guitarists, I really think we all need to give this guy a listen. I'm very bored getting only 10 or 20 messages a day, I think (we used to get 50 or 60 when FII was released). Anyway, I just heard that there's some cool classical guitar CDs out there that I'm hoping to get. I got these recommendations from the rec.music.classical.guitar FAQ (of course, I'm using the term classical here in the broad sense). The CD that caught my attention was "Manuel Barrueco plays 300 Years of Guitar Masterpieces" (I don't remember if this is the title, but do a search on "Manuel Barrueco" as a performer on CD Now/CD Universe/CD Connection/whatever). It is a 3CD box and costs (drums, please) the expensive quantity of 14 dollars! He is interpreting many pieces from many composers (Bach springs to mind). > -Brian Anderson BTW, if any of you have any other recommendations, please do send them to the list. Check out an album called "Friday Night Live in San Fransisco" by Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, and Paco De Lucia. John, of course, led the aforementioned Mahavishnu Orchestra in the 70's, Al is a Miles Davis and Return to Forever alumni, and Paco is one of the world's best flamenco guitarists. The three of them together are simply mind-boggling! The album came out in the early 80's, on Columbia records, and it has been reprinted several times at least so it shouldn't be *too* hard to find. They've done several other albums together, and all that I've heard are wonderful. Check it out if you can find it! This guy is sick! Chatting with him afterwards was very enlightening too. He told me that the reason he plays this way is because he's a fan of the "second half" of a note. He's trying to sound like all of his notes have already been ringing for a while when he plays them. He says too much emphasis is put on the attack, and not enough on what happens after. The reason he plays acoustic most of the time is because while living in LA all his electrics got jacked during his robbery so all he had was his acoustic. anyway, I've plugged this guy enough. However, they *are* saying 'step right up folks'. But if i listen to it a certain way it sounds like 'Is that guy wearing a blouse'. Its kinda like those pictures where if you see the white part you see a vase, and if you see the black part you see 2 faces...but of course its an audio version of that. I think this one should go in the FAQ:) Instrumental music...man there's so much. First off, for classical music: Stravinsky's 'Rite of Spring'! This will knock your socks off, guaranteed. Ever imagined an orchestra play metal? hehehehe Also Joaquin Rodrigo's 'Concerto de Aranjuez'. while not of the flashy type, is an incredibely beatiful guitar concerto. I also second 'Return to Forever'. Along those same lines you should look into 'Tribal Tech', 'Bela Fleck and the Flektones (awesome bass), hmmm, lesse what else... John Coltranes 'A Love Supreme' is awesomely beatiful (although more traditional jazz).... Michael Hedges!!!The acoustic wizard! :) I heard 'Taproot' and its unbelievable. Then theres always the cool more prog-rock bands like Dixie Dregs and Ozric Tentacles...man i could go on and on:) buh-bye Ærnesto ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Oct 1997 04:47:10 -0400 (EDT) From: Richard Banister To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Kansas Message-ID: > > the band that blew me away after Kansas was The Dixie Dreggs. > > they too were incredible in concert. > (much better than 5 years before when they played OK City). But the real > kicker was that during this tour, they had Steve Morse filling in for lead > guitar. This guy was amazing! I wouldn't have expected Morse's style to yah. .. Morse was a full member of Kansas for an album or two (I think he was on Power. . . which, like any of the later Kansas albums is _whole_ lot different from their first ones). He of course also plays on the Rush tribute album, for which I've heard mixed things. I for one (and forgive me if this has been discussed long before, I'm new) love his work on that album, even if he doesn't remain so true to Lifesons solos. . (in a similar vein, notice Analog Kid, which just completely dominates Rush's original version). Someone posted asking about Kansas, and I can _highly_ recommend Point of Know Return and Leftoverture. PoKR just makes me sit down and shut up every time I listen to it ('Hopelessly Human' ties with LTL for best closing of an album I've ever heard). They're definitely a lot 'lighter' than DT, perhaps closer to Yes. . . definite 70s style in some songs. I have yet to hear Dixie Dregs, even though Morse is consistently mentioned as one of JPs biggest influences (as any reader of Guitar will attest to. . .). They rank highly among my 'to buy' list (right next to all the other prog bands mentioned on this list ). I fear that if they become popular, a) they will 'sell out' (if, in fact, one believes in 'seliing out'), or b) we'll get a bunch of new DT fans who love Hollow Years (heh heh. . . I had this same thought when I heard The Silent Man the first time), but understand nothing about the music, about what it means (in a sense, casual listeners). Success could be great for the band (for one thing, they could stay signed to a label. .(or maybe their label will realize that they exist)), but could it also mean a death of creativity? It's sad to see bands become successful and then release (in my eyes) a sub-standard album. . . I want DT to become successful (god knows they deserve it), but at the same time I fear the results. . . figuratively, Rich ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Oct 1997 09:20:06 -0400 (EDT) From: Everett W Painter To: email_address_removed Subject: JAXX Show Message-ID: Hi all.... Yeah, you would think so, but Paula wouldn't let them. I believe Wal-Mart offered to carry the CD if the cover was changed to something "more acceptable," but Paula refused. She said that the cover picture was as much a part of her artistic expression as the music on the CD was. So, neither side budged and that's how it ended. I read all this is some music magazine, but, unfortunately, I can't remember with one or how long ago it was. Apparently the Scorpions were more willing to change the cover for higher sales than Ms. Cole was. So there you have it.......
