Message-ID: Those days without the JAM were strange! At one point we ran out of coffee here at the office, the result was nearly fatal! :-) I would like to use this opportunity to thank Nicole, Ken, and of course Lisa Marie "Java" Peterson! THANX! It was mentioned how great Mahavishnu Orchestra is, and I agree. There were a couple of KILLER albums (and some not so killer, but I'll save that bit for later. :-) ) On JLMB there is a voice saying Just step up, folks, that is true. It's a sample from somwhere. Where? DT's always used plenty of samples, and that is perfectly all right by me, as long as they leave those chopper-samples alone. :-) JLMB is a really fun song! It's got both musical and lyrical humour. It's the ultimate DT parody by DT. I laughed my ass off the first time I heared it. It's right on the border of "Artist not being played on MTV bitching about how horrible MTV is only because he's not being played on MTV". :-) One last thing: Is FII still charting out there? Reports!! C-ya! Just regard it as the radio version of Jan's three part epic or something... Hi everybody, in the latest edition of German Rock Hard magazine there's a long interview with OFB's lead singer, and I thought it might be nice to mention some points that could be interesting to other jammers (I left out the stuff that most people on this list should already know). I didn't try to translate his answers back into English word for word, but summarized the most important things. Here's what he had to say: About their trip to South America: He says the three recent South American shows were fantastic, and the fans' enthusiasm reminded him of the Italian audiences. Because of this great success there might be a 'real' tour through Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and Chile next year. About You Not Me: He regards their collaboration with Desmond Child as a solitary experiment. When their label asked them to work with him they were strictly opposed at first but then decided to give it a try. 99 percent of the album were still written by the band alone. About Kevin Shirley: He says that the label did not force them to work with him but that it was basically his (James') idea to let him be the producer of the album because he loved the sound on Rush's Counterparts and the latest Journey album. The other band members were a bit sceptical at first but after a personal meeting with Kevin they agreed that he'd be the right man for the job because he's supposedly a big fan of DT, Yes, Pink Floyd and Rush. James goes on to praise his work some more and says that FII sounds more rough and heavy while Awake had a too synthetic sound. About Take Away My Pain: James says that he's not really satisfied with his vocals on the studio version. He agrees that they sounded much more emotional on the demo version but Kevin suggested to sing like somebody who feels totally cold, numb and empty because of their great loss (bad idea IMO). About Anna Lee: He was inspired to write the lyrics after reading some books about child abuse and incest but they aren't based on any real persons. About forthcoming DT releases: When asked about the Ronnie Scott's video, James says that they might release it when they think the right time has come. If it was up to him they'd compile stuff for a new live album which should feature recordings from different countries to represent the different vibes of each audience. After the coming 18 months of touring he'd also like to enter the studio again as soon as possible to record the songs that didn't make it onto FII, like Metropolis 2. Well, that's it, I hope somebody found this at least remotely interesting... The third and last part will be finished after the weekend... (Hi Andreas: I guess that was just bad timing. We could have spared ourselves quite some work, but you never know. Well, so we can at least compare our translation efforts. BTW, yours is excellent :) Writer: There's a track on FII called 'You not me' that can be compared to PMU when it comes to accessibility. It's the result of a DT/Desmond Child cooperation. Desmond Child is a songwriter who wrote quite a number of hits for bands like Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Aerosmith, Michael Bolton and others. One gets the impression that you called him in in order to make up a hit with good chances for airplay. James: I guess the fact that YNM is suitable for being played on the radio cannot be denied. However, I rather see this cooperation with Desmond as a unique experiment. The record company proposed to brush up the original version of YNM with a little help from Desmond. First, we were strictly against doing so, but after a while we decided that it might be worth the try. Writer: You sure can imagine that the fans were kind of shocked when they first heard about DT working with a mainstream guru like Desmond Child. James: Certainly there'll be some fans who take offense at that, but one shouldn't use that against us. After all, Desmond just helped us out working on some melody lines and some lines of the lyrics. We are professional musicians who try out all kinds of things and 99 percent of the album have been created by us. Writer: Most people really love FII, but there are also those who seem to have some problems with it. One negative statement is that the record label pushed DT to work with the mainstream producer Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith, Journey, Silverchair). James: That's definitely not true. Actually, it was me who first considered Kevin as our producer, because I love Rush's 'Counterparts' album, which has been produced by Kevin. I also love the sound of the latest Journey-CD, so I proposed Kevin. First, the other band members were sceptical, though. So we made our label arrange a meeting. Pretty soon, we realized that we all have a lot in common. Kevin not only is a big DT fan, he also loves bands like Yes, Pink Floyd and Rush. He talked about some of his ideas and he really shared our visions. He was the first producer to add to our work without destroying our own ideas. He always seemed to know where he could make proposals for improvements and where we'd never be ready to change our ideas. Other producers seemed to be more interessted in getting the whole thing through as quick and smooth as possible, but Kevin was only satisfied with our best performance. Writer: Some people say that the guitar sound isn't as heavy as on your former albums. James: I don't think so! The guitar sound should be considered ultra fat this time! You know what, the fans who think so should - if they have the technical opportunity to do so - insert 'Awake' and 'FII' into their CD charger at the same time and switch randomly between those two CDs. They will realize the differences in production and see that the new album is much more heavier than 'Awake' which sounded too synthetic. Writer: Another thing is some people's claim that new keyboarder Derek Sherinian isn't really giving as much input into DT's music as Kevin Moore did. James: Really? Well, anyway, David tried hard and worked very intensly on the sounds! He integrated some rock and roll elements into our songs, because he's a big fan of guitar players like Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads and Jake E. Lee. He's a Berkley graduate and has been absorbing those Jazz and Fusion influences. I think he added to our sound, but I sure accept people who don't think so. Writer: There's a sensitive song on FII called 'Take away my pain' with lyrics by John Petrucci. The song is about John's father who passed away not so long ago. It goes without saying that the lyrics are very emotional. Was it hard for you to reproduce the emotions of someone else and still be convincing? James: To tell you the truth, I'm not completely satisfied with my vocals on that particular song. The vocals sounded much more emotional on the demo version of the song, but Kevin convinced me to do the vocals in a more distant way, like somebody who lost all of his emotions by having to deal with a big loss. Maybe someone who just lost such an important person in his/her life is so overwhelmed by those feelings that there's only a big void for a certain time and no emotions at all. If you see it that way, after all, my interpretation on the CD is right. Whoever posted that interview from the German magazine, you rock. I can't wait to see the rest. I noticed only one line that sort of came out a little weird... "Where they played live for the first time" referring to the Brazil show, I believe. Of course I'm sure that something was lost in the translation and its meaning is "They played live in Brazil for the first time". Upon first reading though, I was wondering if it was a really old interview until FII came up. Jeremy: since you offered me a clue, free of charge (Which I didn't need, since I offer a competetive product, the "Thumbtack Embedded Bubblegum of Clarity") I am dropping the issue entirely. But if you saw Bogie's response post, you see how easily that situation was contained. Let's just stick to the peace, love, and good scrotum ripping music. After The Shows on this tour: Originally Debbie Seeger e-mailed me during the Fates tour, since she and some friends were coming to Chicago to see the House of Blues show. She had the idea to organize some festivities, where we could all hang out and talk shit. It would have been a blast, except we didn't know enough people going to really get it off the ground. It didn't help that I didn't have ID to get into the show, and had to skip it altogether. For the Dream Theater tour, the idea was still fresh in our minds, and we saw a lot of people who were driving out for the Chicago HoB show. With remarkably little effort, we've come up with a few plans. A). Were probably going to park in a free parking area uptown, and shuttle people down to the venue, so we'll only have one $12 parking fee to be concerned with. B). We're going to wait in line in a big evil YtseBunch, and possibly send runners to get food so we can keep our place in the line. C). After the show, we're going back uptown to either a restaurant, diner, or one of the local bars that will let underage people in (though probably not drink). If all of these options fail, we'll all go back to my crash pad and party there (Though that's a bit of a drive). Bottom line: We're going to have a blast! It's going to be like a mini YtseCon. Gabbo's supplying me with t-shirts if any in attendance don't have one, and want to show their YtseColors. There's a number of other things we might do as YtseFestivities, but it's going to be pretty damn cool. I recommend that someone tries to organize an outing like this for EVERY show! If anyone needs some help in getting a gathering like this off the ground, e-mail me. Brian is considering putting the YtseGatherings on the YtseContacts page, so that people who sign in can find out if there's a party after their show too. To anyone hitting these shows (And to those partying afterward): Be responsible. I don't want to read in the jam about Ytse's getting in car accidents and shit. Designated drivers are good things.
