I've been on this list for 3 or 4 months now, and I've only just caught up on all those messages:). This list may be high traffic, but there have been some GREAT band recommendations on here, so I'm sticking with it if only for that. It's also nice to see people who are as into music as I am, although some people are much more heavily into the technical aspects than I am. I've only seriously been into Dream Theater for about 2 years or so, although when the first album came out I was doing a local bands show here on Long Island, and I liked them and played them on my show as a "Local Celebrity". I didn't have the album at home, so I mostly forgot about them until I picked up I&W and Awake a couple of years ago and got hooked:). However, somewhere in that time my ex-boyfriend and I were living in an apartment, and our next door neighbor was none other than Chris Collins, of Majesty fame. He was a really nice guy, and told us how he used to be in the band before it was signed. We even got to hear his singing through the walls all the time, which was really nice. He's actually a really good singer, although I liked it better when he dropped the "heavy metal" voice and sang naturally. He offered to give me singing lessons, but I lost touch with him. Does anyone seriously know what he's doing lately? He was talking about going back to school and getting into computers, so I wouldn't be surprised if he's online somewhere:). Well, while I was catching up on e-mail here I found out about the New Haven show, and since it didn't look like there was going to be a Long Island show I called Toad's Place and got a ticket. So of course 2 days later they announced the NYC show:(. Well, I guess I'll see them twice. I'll be there with a friend of mine (actually the same guy who lived next door to Chris with me) and I'll wear my Home for the Holidays shirt. Finally, I spent most of the last year in Grad school in Tallahassee, FL, and I walked into a Sam Goody down there last fall wearing my Dream Theater shirt and the guy working there commented on it. It turned out he was on this list! So I just wanted to say "Hi!" to him if he's here, and let him know I'm back in NY (which is why he hasn't seen me in a while), and I finally broke down and subscribed. Well, sorry to make this so long, but I'll go back to mostly lurking now:). ------------------------------------------------------------------- Sharan Volin email_address_removed http://pobox.com/~sharan Musicians Online: http://pobox.com/~sharan/musiconline/ Local Rock: http://pobox.com/~localrock/localrock.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Oct 1997 09:39:17 +0200 From: Steffen Barabasch To: email_address_removed Subject: TOURDATES Message-ID: Hi! The latest issue of Rock Hard, a German rock magazine features a pretty big interview with James LaBrie. I'm sure that some of you are interested in it, so I decided to translate it and type it in. Quite a piece of work, especially when you can only type using two fingers like I do :). So, I'm gonna split this huge thing up into three pieces. First piece comes now, the next one should be due on Monday. Please forgive me the typos and any unusual phrasing, I do this in quite a hurry and English isn't my native language :) Here we go: Writer: James LaBrie is satisfied. Just a few days before our meeting, he came back from South America where DT played live for the first time in their career. James: 'Boy, it simply was fantastic. We played two shows in Sao Paulo and on in Rio, and there were up to 7000 fans per show, who totally flipped out. They totally reminded me of the italian fans, who are just as enthusiastic and who always try to grab you. The whole thing was so succesful that our promoter plans to send us onto a big tour to Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and Chile next year. We also did lots of interviews, so the trip really paid off!' Writer: As did waiting for the new DT album. Looking back: Just a few month ago, the band was impatiently waiting since their record company changed some employees and suddenly nobody felt responsible for DT anymore. The new team just started to work efficiently in spring '97. However, from this point on, everything happened rather quickly. James: 'At one point without warning, they said we were to go to the studio immediately. That was no problem for us, since while waiting we've been permanently busy writing new songs. So, we had heaps of new material. The most difficult thing was to choose the songs for the CD, because there wasn't a chance to release all the songs. After all, we had to choose from over two and a half hours of music. Although we were prepared very well, there was much more spontanity while working in the studio. For a big part, this has been caused by our producer Kevin Shirley. When we were doing our mini tour in Europe in April, he flew to Amsterdam just to see our show. He was very enthusiastic about it, so he wanted to get the live atmosphere on the CD. Instead of recording all the drum parts first, followed by bass, guitars and so on, as usual, we worked on a song by song basis and recorded things live in the studio as much as possible. Only things like guitar leads and background vocals have been recorded afterwards. Each song got its own identity since we were able to concentrate on each song as a whole.' Writer: What I like about FII is the fact that the songs are straighter and more accessible than those on Awake which IMO was too complex and voluminous. Has this step been taken deliberately? James: 'Well, like every band does, we always develop further. In my opinion, the best thing about FII is the broad variety of the music on it. Actually, while doing the songwriting, we tried to get to the point of the songs pretty soon, unlike before. I mean, it cannot be wrong if one or another straight song gets some airplay. Maybe we can reach people who otherwise don't listen to DT. And maybe those people buy our CD and realize that they also like the more progressive and jazzy songs, which do also exist on FII.' Writer: Even in the more accessible songs there are cool, small elements that you don't realize when you first listen to the CD, so those long-time DT fans should also be completely satisfied, especially when considering that there are some tracks like 'Peruvian Skies', 'Lines in the Sand' and 'Trial of Tears', which are long and complex. There's lots of things happening in those songs and they are alike to other traditional DT songs, even if they might sound a little more relaxed than the older material. However, there was 'Pull me under' on I&W, which was a very accessible and succesful track, which helped the band to get popular. But it also prompted many fans and especially the record company to expext a similar 'hit'. Did the band come to see PMU as a curse, since all the world is waiting for a successor? James: 'No, not at all. PMU was more a blessing than a curse, because it meant worldwide success. It enabled us to work on the level we do now. After being so successful with PMU, the record company stopped trying to influence our work, because they realized that our way of writing songs obviously must be successful. If it wasn't for PMU, they might even have dropped us and I wouldn't be able to talk to you right now... Marcel Berkhout of the Netherlands made this faithful and complete live performance available in 1996, and it's sold out as far as anyone knows. It was a CDR boot from the start. It's from the Bospop Festival in Sportpark, Boshoven, 7/8/95. It's a crystal clear audience recording, likely made with a Sony D-7 with Core mics by the sound of it. The clapping and poor sing-alongs of nearby fans isn't intrusive, and the band is very clear and bright on this recording. It was a shortened set because DT was in the midst of playing a festival gig, so this CD is all of it. The packaging was phenomenal. Overall, definitely a keeper.
