Message-ID: hey hey.. . this is my first post, so please excuse any grave errors (e.g. filling your inboxes with more massive posts, or forgetting to delete all the digest and sending it back. . .). . . well, I finally figured out how to read the jam. . . skip all the ones you haven't read yet, and read the latest one. Only then will you be able to actually participate without fear of being completely behind (up until an hour ago, I was ready to post about lack or recognition in the liner notes of FII. . silly me). . . > the production of the album. What I mean by this is not the way the > instruments SOUND, but the actual recording. Bottom line : IT'S DIRTY! I agree. . although it's not always a bad thing. . . listen to tools 'undertow' . .. tool's supposed to be heavy, right? That album is mixed so quiet, I have to turn my stereo up to hear it after listening to Jazz. . It's all in what you're trying to achieve in the mix. FII is pretty dirty. . . which is a factor of them mixing it loud. . . and it adds to the feeling you get from it (as opposed to awake, which is as pure as the driven snow). However, I do think they fuck up, and mix over the top in some places (anyone else notice the low end start to _distort_ in PS? oof!). . . > I have an exceptionally clean stereo in my car with three amps and > electronic crossever etc etc. Top of the line everything. Not bragging, Listened to FII through flat reponse recording headphones the other day. . that shit blew me away. _That's_ why you mix an album loud. . it rocks that way. > JLMB - I think it's the guitar tracks again that get fuzzy. Also the drums > arent too great either. I, for one, think there's too much activity in JLMB instrumentally. . . > for ONE BIG REASON. Kevin Moore wasn't into the band anymore!! It's that > simple. A player can have all the chops in the world, but if their heart yeah, really. Look at KMs work on awake (barring SDV). . . you can tell he's drifting away. . he doesn't mesh with the band anymore. That's why he's outta there .. DS is a much better choice for them. . and some of his sounds add incredible depth to the songs (PS final chorus when keys come in. . he loves that sound, but it still floors me). > Well, i've been learning that guitar/keys trade-off part in JLMB, and as i > was learning it, it reminded me a LOT of the unison melody in TTT. They heh .. .reminds me of "One Word". . . except the Mahavishnu Orchestra kicks the shit out of DTs trade off work any day. . . (insert flame here) which reminds me. . . anyone interested in expanding the realms of your prog collection, I can recommend two things: Mahavishnu and Kansas. The MO can rip shit like I can't even believe (19/8 at 400 bpm = ouch. Mclaughlin made a metronome that could play two diff. time sigs at the same time. . . that guy's a nutjob). Takes a listen or two (and your neighbors _will_ think you're crazy when they hear it). . but as soon as you hear the trade offs in "One Word" . . ahh. Kinda gets you right there. Kansas is another story. . . they have incredible compositions. The way they put a song together, it still blows my mind. Very orchestral. ... and "The Spider" is still the most incredible instrumental I've ever heard (yes, better than our namesake). . > In my opinion, it IS THE SAME RIFF!! I think DT intentionally put it in there > as a throw-back to Images and Words...That riff kind of ran throughout I&W yes. Speed up WFS, and you have JLMB. That whole song is chock-full of references to IAW (lyrically and instrumentally). .. Whoaa. . looks like my post is coming to an end. . . sorry about the imensity of it. . . but I have a propensity to come in with a bang (had it my whole life. . my girlfriend hates it! ). I'll try to keep future posts to under 20k. . . figuratively, Rich ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Oct 1997 21:51:27 -0200 (EDT) From: Rogerio Brito To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Sex :-) Message-ID: On Wed, 22 Oct 1997, Jeremy C. Has anyone heard of a project with Sean Malone(bassist/stick player) and that other Sean from Cynic(the drummer). Also, it is supposed to have Trey Gunn(the guy who plays Warr guitar for King Crimson), and the guitarist from Spactic Ink(I forget his name but he is known as /the/ odd time guitarist, & he also had problems with his hand). And John Myung is supposed to make a guest appearance(bass or stick?). I heard this from someone on another prog-metal list. And just want to know if anyone here has heard of this. I'm only on this > list for DT info. > > Jim -------------------- Well, since you blatantly called me a "schmuck" and a "fucking dickhead", it is now my turn to humiliate you on the mailing list. I am the "fucking dickhead", as you refer to it, who is auctioning off 4 DT bootlegs to the highest bidder. Why? Because I feel that this _Dream Theater Mailing List_ is a forum for anything in relation to Dream Theater. There are many fans out there who are interested in collecting Dream Theater bootlegs, so, as I have done in the past, I figured that I would give members of the Ytsejam a chance to buy these CDs from me which I no longer wish to own. (I have duplicate copies of the CDs I am auctioning.) And, I figured that it would be more fair to the people who truly desire to own these CDs to hold an auction rather than a set sale because of the ack mode/digest mode difference. Do you think the band members who read this list are offended by only posts like mine? What about the posts that say "Labrie suckz.", "Petrucci doesn't know how to play guitar." or, for instance, "Pardon my french but what kind of fucking dickhead is trying to turn this already off track list into an auction?" Before you begin to blindly criticize members of this list, why don't you gather your thoughts beforehand and submit your post in a mature manner? I think that it is unfair of you to make judgments of people you do not know on a mailing list. And, this mailing list is not here for the band's sake. It is not their forum - it is a forum which belongs to its fans - a creation of Ryan Skadberg who thought that it would be an excellent idea to have a mailing list which could reach out to DT's fans. If I may plagiarize from the notice you receive when you subscribe to Ytsejam: "Welcome to YTSEJAM, the Dream Theater mailing list! This list is for fans of Dream Theater, and will discuss them and any related topics." I believe my post to be of fair content under this guideline. If you truly have a problem with it, email email_address_removed. If he finds my post unobliging to the posting guidelines, he will notify me of the problem. So, next time, if you dislike a post you read on the mailing list, direct your problems to him, not the mailing list. This is not a forum for you to discuss your disgust of the content on this mailing list. And, Jim, if you are only here for DT info, I strongly suggest you unsubscribe. Otherwise, I think you'll be disappointed to read a plethora of posts full of NDTC. And low and behold, guess who was on it? That's right, DT. It had a clip of the YNM video (about 20 seconds worth). It also contained sound clips of HY and PS. Too cool. I remember back in '93, I saw PMU on one of these same machines at a different Wal-Mart. Then, an even bigger surprise. They had about 5 copies of FII in the CD rack, priced at $12.99 no less (two bucks less than I paid). Anyway, I think it is pretty safe to say that DT is DEFIANTLY making a larger than usual presence in the major markets with this release. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Oct 1997 22:00:02 -0400 (EDT) From: "Partha S. The girl said the opening band will start at 6:30 PM, So just to let everyone know, because usually Dream Theater doesn't play til 11:00 or 12:00 PM.
