What a pleasant surprise. :-) The same magazine also has a free cover CD, and the latest Judas Priest song (Bullet Train) is on there. Heavy as fuck, and absolutely brilliant. The new guy sounds so like Halford it's spooky. I wonder if the list is messed up. Or geesh, I sure hope, I haven't been kicked off!! :) Well, at long last, over 150 CDs of Darkest of Winters and Mosaic will be hurtling into the mail tomorrow, followed by more of the same over the next week, plus the usual stuff. I appreciate the immense patience of all who are awaiting their tunes. I am really proud of the sound on Mosaic (mainly from the Fix shows) and I hope this one pleases most listeners. The discs themselves have been done for a while now, I have been waiting for the liners to arrive, and they come in tomorrow morning. Also a public thanks to Greg Chong for trading me his Playstation and getting me a Saturn mod chip. This IS DT content however, because now I need someone who has the Sega Saturn game NECRONOMICON to let me borrow + clone it, so I can get the John Petrucci sound track off it for my next DT disc!!! Other stuff that's 90% likely to appear on the next disc are the Cover My Eyes demo, the Nightmare Cinema performance, and the 100% likely Metropolis outtake from WDADU that I ran out of room on Mosaic for, after originally intending to include it. The bad news is that the next disc cannot be released in 1997 (remember my one-per-year-from-now-on pact with DT). In other news, knock on wood, both computers seem to be functioning perfectly, and CD production is at an unprecedented pace. I may finally catch up, thank GOD, with the order queue, before 1997 comes to an end!! Does anyone else here think Cover My Eyes is an awesome tune that should not have been cut from FII? I thought Speak to Me and Where Are You Now were just a touch on the weak side, good songs to be sure but not as good as what we wound up getting, but CME is just outstanding. More of the uplifting stuff would have ruined the mood on FII, they must have figured. I also like the TAMP demo version's lyrics, but I gotta say, I still like the speed, solo, and drums on the FII version better. A final word. My usual big post "thoughts" is still late in coming, because I am actually awaiting the conclusion of certain events in my life before I post the big reflection that I hope people will find at least readable and not worthless. :) One such event is a strange and troubling e-mail exchange I'm having with a European Jammer. I won't go into the sordid details of it here, but the nutshell of it is that I have completely failed to deliver for this person in every way, and since I really don't have a life and my internet exploits are what I define myself by, I am actually losing sleep over the situation (can you believe this?) and I really don't know what's going to happen to resolve it. I am particularly bothered because although I have a reputation of reliability, I know for myself that this was a time that I really dropped the ball, and didn't come through for a customer. I take that more seriously than most people think. I don't really know where I'm going with this thread, so I guess I'll just end it there. Like many things in life, this has no apparent resolution and I'm sort of stuck in limbo wondering, "who will I fail next?" while hoping in vain that there won't _be_ a "next time". -- -Mike Bahr/Prism Records email_address_removed -http://www.goodnet.com/~durnik/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Oct 1997 09:21:32 -0400 From: "Ryan P. What do they sound like ? What influences ? Which album can you >reccomend ? It's really hard to describe this band (imo)... there's a bit of The Beatles, The Who, Marillion, Rush, Dream Theater, Pink Floyd, Kansas, Jethro Tull, Genesis (probably more that I can't think of right now)... and something that I can only describe as the genius of Neal Morse. These guys are just f*ing incredible. Spock's Beard has two (well, three) albums... "The Light", and "Beware of Darkness", (there is also the "Official Live Bootleg" from Progfest 95)... and they have a new one due out in January called "The Kindness of Strangers". It's really hard to recommend an album, because you should really get them all! If I had to pick one, I guess I would say "Beware of Darkness"... but you can't lose with any of them. Btw, Spock's Beard will be doing a short tour of Germany and Holland in January. You can find tour dates on the THOUGHTS Homepage once they are confirmed: http://home.pacbell.net/proghead/thoughts.html There is also a form to subscribe to the Spock's Beard mailing list, and a link to the Official Spock's Beard Homepage, which has some samples for you to check out. seeya! :o) Lisa Marie ------------------------------------------------------------ ".`^~,^. __ _ '._',_.; Lisa Marie Peterson \ \ ___ ___ ___(_) ___ ( \/ ) email_address_removed \ \/ _ \/ __/ __| |/ _ \ \ / ICQ UIN#1518578 /\_/ / __/\__ \__ \ | __/ \/ \___/ \___||___/___/_|\___| http://www.fortunecity.com/lavendar/greatsleep/17/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Life is a mystery to be lived, not a problem to be solved. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Oct 1997 13:10:13 -0400 (EDT) From: Eric Desobe To: email_address_removed Subject: lack of Message-ID: Just wondering if the jam has been down lately because it has been awhile since I have received one. OK, in the Mirror, right after the last lyric of the song, which I think is "I'll never hurt you again", it breaks into the verse from Space Dye Vest. You can sing the line "Falling through pages of martens on angels, feeling my heart pull west" right over top of it. It's pretty obvious. Also, the little guitar bridge right before the solo in The Silent Man is used is Erotomania, but it's hard to explain where. I also hear the bassline to Lie in the verses of Lines in the Sand. Parts of CIANITG were used in New Millenium, but that doesn't really count, cuz it would be like saying parts of the Mirror were used in Pup. Works in progress. That's all I hear, except for the obvious WFS/LTL riff. Some people have mentioned parts of Pull Me Under in songs, which I've never heard. I'd be interested to hear detailed explainations of others. I hope they aren't. I've had the misfortune of seeing this band on two occasions. They opend for Van Halen(!) a few years ago and last year they played my university (I'm Canadian). The drummer can wail but the rest of them are just terrible. When they came to school they got pissed off at THE AUDIENCE for baricades that THE BAND insisted on having. Idiots. Why aren't we getting a band that is at least in the same GENRE as DT? Who are Our Lady Peace supposed to represent? Ugh. BTW -- Anybody gonna be at the Toronto show? In fact, the keyboardist in my band plays the Korg > Trinity. Nothing can touch that thing. Except, of course, Jordan Rudess and his Kurzweil K2500ES (or CS, can't remember, the expensive one :)), which chews it up and spits it out :) Wait till you hear it on this new thing he MP,JP and Tony Levin collaborated! IT has THE closest approximation to a grand piano I've ever heard. At the same time, when it comes to completely non-real-world sounds, it's one of the most technically advanced synths on the market. Of course, a lot of it has to do with Jordan's custom patches (I assume he keeps that disk locked away :) I caught a couple of Rudess/Morgenstein clinics where Jordan demoed some of the mind/ear boggling things this instrument can do. I believe there's someting he called a 'pitcher' which samples the sound(s) being generated at the time, in real-time, looking for commonalities (harmonics?) and mixes in a new sound (don't ask me how this new sound is created) as part of the resultant sound. When he played around with it, I can honestly say I'd never heard anything quite like this before. He demoed it with this feature (as well as for others) so one could hear the difference. Oh yeah, we were talking about Derek... sorry :) I agree with you though, Derek is totally into this band!! I saw them in Providence this past Friday night. Aside from the soundman missing several clues (keyboards were hard to hear at times, bass was mixed too loud and muddy, hard to hear James clearly at times even when he held up a fookin' megpahone to the mic!), Derek showed a lot of feel along with the talent. Also, he came out to hang after the concert like he did at the Fix for '96 show at the Strand. One can be the best player in the world and it don't mean shit to me. There's simply so much more to life than perfection. > Sorry if I sound like an asshole, but if I were Derek Sherinian reading the > Jam, I'd be really bummed that people are still comparing him to Kevin > Moore and talking about how he could fit in better. I don't think he'd bum, 'cuz he'd consider the source. Repeat after me: the jam is not reflective of the real world, the jam is not reflective or the real world :) > See y'all at the Toad's show!
